just noticed on facebook a post by a local builder, turns out they have bought a new nail gun that uses wooden nails and have used it to hold on cladding, it appears to work quite well, and i can confirm about the problems with rusting stainless nails the problems with living in a marine climate. theres a quick video on facebook to show it working https://www.facebook.com/BA-Builders-shetland-LTD-226214484102464/?__tn__=kCH-R&eid=ARCrWTNdNpOwX1wQCr6gSGkoZtktBLY6huQnhuw2qG2IkkZJZk78X0T3qSddPDNyA71L8pxPFpmC8J8r&hc_ref=ARSbyVC-0GNkKfsPQCZRmupovzJxBYsKW7BO7ghbmz0k_WWKGGdGu75S6Mo-Phxphr8&fref=nf&__xts__[0]=68.ARBqB-KAQZ-HpEACbOxHfyixPxpwwsgsM-pEY9l7bAYKBVQ2CcxEGiD181nZkyAG4H-Il4Hd-kxA0EoWMgDx6452LCo2Ok4Or8eKDwhF7ZVYkdBq7SPZt9JhUy3HPLS3HriBatsETeWdagJ8AZn9G5iBY9ukGfIgEpW2CxznG1pJ9GWV4KDrcU--Roz5if8bkwMgeTVUr2aIFUX7CcxCRqJcy_l5yqNYv_ETLwZ7siRJjJm26a6RBJF7l81LdVVusABIyzDDXcXg9X7Fgaw-JGGt3jOyzmpq2nkaEo8SSearcTZQb1eZPrLiuSaPGQsOWcIOIixtZmH8QXDUxSd8IpOcfrqvDqwDFKROkf2RqxYPV-AVWVms0cub8l3P5e1jE8kLGNCJai7c2B9-DvWFTYNxoyKJv-YvpMWF2I4vzDZxrUE88X94sLwMRmpXfIVrR0RRPTFj4x-HzQfCeny54wK_22xQ0otx5_Ob4Uxgkyi4BZPxggeLylYASt20AjvntF-oEZoVTfwaEdsQd5e6jRPREg https://www.beck-lignoloc.com/en2 points

Not sure what the point of Satan is - what do you get that you don't get with a more traditional sounding 'thermostatic' shower unit other than being a bit poorer.1 point

I'm all for DIY and buying tools but just to be realistic about things. That's 500m x 4 sides. You'll enjoy it for the first few hours. Accept it for the rest of the day and however long it takes you after that you'll begrudge it. Especially if you somehow randomly get a nick in your blade (which happens by magic most of the time) Don't get me wrong it'll be an achievement and I'm sure you'll be happy with what you've done but I wouldn't reccomend it as a cost saving exercise. Iv machined a fair amount of timber and it soon looses its novelty. My 2 cents.1 point

Ok Guys, Please see my crude diagram below and let me know if its ok (its not to scale) My plan is to run the soil pipe up to and level with concrete sub floor - to then add 110mm to 50mm reducers so that the 50mm pipe runs through the PIR insulation and then straight up to the sink and the shower. The shower waste will need to have the screed cut out to fit the waste flush with the floor when the tray is fitted so I intend to take it straight up to start with (so the floor can be laid) then when the floor area is cut out, it can be shortened and the bend added. The length of the pipe from the shower to the soil pipe with only be about 300mm before the bend. Thanks, Wozza.1 point

They must be in your name and not someone else’s (eg your builder). If there is no name on the invoice because it’s more like a receipt from a retail company then there is evidence that HMRC do accept receipts of a lowish value. Do try to restrict these to purchases under £100 if you can though. Most retail places have some way of requesting a full VAT receipt.1 point

I've got a Dunsley Yorkshire wood burner with boiler, but on my next project I will definitely look at log gasification boilers as the government subsidy means they pay for themselves in 6/7 years. Worth looking into1 point

A friend I used to work with tried to do a DIY Landrover gearbox out. Took the seats and floor out Tied a rope around the gearbox and round his shoulders, undid the bolts and started prising the gearbox off the engine. It was somewhat heavier than he expected and he followed it through the hole and ended up on the garage floor on top of the gearbox.1 point

I've used Chromopal on a big flat roof a few times. I've never used the cleaner. I would scrub with a degreaser, not bleach. Ensure its well rinsed and dry before applying the Chromopal. Truckwash is your friend, cheap and effective: https://www.amazon.co.uk/CAUSTIC-TRAFFIC-REMOVER-TRUCK-include/dp/B071FYMTL9 Edit: That link is expensive. Any decent autoparts factors should sell you a 5ltr container for £20-30 max.1 point

That tile trim you have selected would do the job, but you've got to think what you are doing at the top of the window etc too. Personally I would be tiling reveals and sill1 point

There is also a plastic (aarrrgghhh - run for the hills) version that you could use. But yes, something like that. Or, do the tiles you intend to use have a finished edge or option tiles for finishing the edge?1 point

Offer them a drive in my old Landrover. On second thoughts, no. I would prefer the gearbox and clutch continued to work.1 point

Exactly my thoughts. I suspect we are creating a housing stock with disastrous issues in the wrong hands. It's like new drivers, they are so used to new cars just doing so much for them and being easy to drive, they are quiet so they drive like idiots all the time too fast because they are not getting all the feelings of speed like we used to (and they are looking at their phones not the speedo). Give them an older car and they can't cope, they would literally mechanically destroy it and probably end up in an accident. It is the same with houses. Explain to them that gearboxes didn't have synchromesh! I am one of these people where almost everything I do I take into consideration the machine or structure or item I am about to use. I am just programmed as "engineer" so everything is assessed and consideration taken to protect or prolong it's serviceable life. A primary example is that I have always been a mechanically very sympathetic driver because I know mechanically how every push rod, con rod, crank shaft, flywheel, clutch plate, clutch cover, input shaft, lay shaft, output flange, drive shaft CV joint etc. all work while a vehicle is being driven. So I know why slamming it into a low gear and gunning it isn't really very good for a car, or why going along a bumpy road in a low gear puts massive moments of inertia onto the whole system all the way back to the crank. Give people a technically or scientifically engineered house then you need the owners or "operators" to know how to run it and I think, generally, people are not willing to think or consider things and believe items, mechanical or structural with just work or exist. We are a different breed on a forum like this, we get it and we take an interest because we are building homes for ourselves, good homes that we spend years thinking about and years planning and years executing and we want the best.1 point

Yes, like the people that tell you their septic tank has not been emptied for 20 years and it is still working perfectly.1 point

Perhaps this demonstrates that an airtight house might be good for someone that understands it, but not so good for the average home owner who understands nothing?1 point

Apparently Fusion 360 will load 2d and 3d DWG files and it's free for home users. It has a tape measure function you can use to measure any distances that don't have dimensions specified.1 point

No, it is 8 hours. Just from what I understand, in mainland UK, you get 'Economy 10' which offers the same service (3 periods of cheap power per day), but with a different number of hours. This is the actual tariff, but I was trying not to overly complicate https://www.jec.co.uk/your-home/our-tariffs-and-rates/comfort-heat/1 point

Regular buying from Ali express. Quality is mixed. Can be lucky sometimes. The real super cheap stuff is mostly also cheap made so I started staying clear of that. You can get fittings and other bits (others here bought lamps) with CE standard so will meet current British standards. And most of it is a fair bit cheaper than cheapest UK supplies even after shipping. As of returns, buy it on credit card and Ali will take care of it, no problem. Only takes ages and you will pay for shipping. And btw., I just discovered, do not buy clothes there. A Chinese 5XL is barely a British Large(and 5xl is most of the time the biggest size they have) ?1 point

I've bought plenty of lights via aliexpress which allows smaller quantities than Alibaba. Delivery can take a while but the goods are fine and much cheaper than UK prices.1 point
