Jobs completed now - all holes dug using an auger. Dig deeper than necessary and then compact the bottom to the desired depth. Worked well.

I think I'd be looking for another plot or making the vendor sort out these issues first. Too much risk for me.

Bath Surround / Boxing In, and concealed pipework

I will miss this thread when the job is done. On the positive side - its going to be a while yet so plenty of amusement to come........ -
Well worth the cost and effort. I've just 'snapped' off at ground level 4 posts that heve been in for 4 years. I wouldnt put a wooden post in the ground without them. Unless you enjoy redoing them every few years - just do it.

Sounds like progress to me. Good luck. -
Tractor mounted borer. Dig deeper than necessary, raise auger, clean. Repeat. Seems to work ok. Hot work today. Thanks for all the suggestions

Soil isnt wet but is slightly moist at depth. Not 100% sure a hoover will pick it up?! Cant use longer handles - cant get them far enough apart down the hole. Do you chaps really think a hoover would do it? The other half suggested an equine poo picker would do the job.

Evening all, Got a bit of a challenge to get your brain cells working. Boring holes for some rsj that will hold back some soil & fence. 1m ones can be cleaned out with a rabbiting spade and / or a post hole digger. The borer gets most out but there's always a bit left in that needs cleaning out. The holes are only 12" in diameter so room is limited for working the above tools. Tomorrow we need to go down 1.5m - we arent too sure how we will clean them out - lot of talk of 'hoovers' from the states but very little over here. Suggestions gratefully received. CC

Elec was cheap - lot cheaper than ours. Gas for us was £205. No heard of h2o charge before.

Will you also attempt to resolve the Brexit negotiations? Good luck!

Kick-starting the week

Wish I was boarding. Planning to do some boundary fencing while the weather is good. Contemplating getting some extra help in to speed things up a bit - time is more limiting than cash really. Following what others are doing does cheer me up a lot. Miss @JSHarris blogs since he's now finished. -
We are likely to use 152 universal columns set into the soil. Sleepers trimmed & slotted into them. Needs to hold back~ 1m of soil.

Bastards. I never leave any tools on site. Why not get a few geese?

Kick-starting the week

I set small targets then double the time allowance if I dont think I will meet them. Sick of putting battens on uneven walls at the minute but won't take a break, I hate going back to a job I hate. The next job involves machinery and mates so it will go a lot quicker and with a lot more fun and banter. Its a lonely job self building on your own. -
How far does tanalising penetrate the end grain?
CC45 replied to Ferdinand's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
Concrete for me as well. As part of my work I visited a wood yard a few years ago and they had plenty of stories about modern treatments. I went to their new outlet on Saturday and they were telling me that cheap posts are treated when wet and then dried - to save cost. Stories of some lasting 2yrs before being replaced. Also told me that CCA was being used again in NZ.- 12 replies

Handy VAT caluculator
CC45 replied to Vijay's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
Just divide or multiply by 1.2, divide to get the net price (VAT is the difference) or multiply the net price by 1.2 to get the gross price. Simple. -
Any pics of the silencer? Got to buy or make one myself before long. How did you seal the duct in? Cheers Cc

@Vijay thats the gun I have. All good. I clean it before storing; I do as much as I can in a hit then clean it.

Yes, its still looking good after 2 years.

I watched that. Incredible really, hope the quality is good. Couple deserved it.

Cooker hood to mvhr extract plenums

@JSHarris I just followed them. Dont they follow this site? Not an uncommon situation, we all seem to have different terms, I was brought up with gable ends of a house being called pine ends, still find it hard to remember to use gable ends.- 46 replies

@Bitpipe like you we have metal web joists - so much easier. Was planning on doing virtually the same as you suggest. Got 12 fitted so far - no probs. Mate due to help on Saturday so it would be good to get the ducts in - how much slack did you leave on each run? For the loft runs I was going to measure the runs and then cut the pipe (downstairs). Long runs first then progress to the shorter ones in order to avoid joints if at all possible. I liked @JSHarris idea of a silencer - intend to do the same if I can figure a way of sealing the pipe to them. Having said that perhaps spending £80 on the ones available would save time and hassle - I'm not short of jobs to do. CC- 46 replies
