  1. Started installing mvhr plenums today, first one was over a shower (right over the middle of the shower according to the plans) but I'm reluctant to put it there - where is the light going to go? BPC design - rest looks fine. Those of you who have mvhr - what have you done about lights in showers? I'm tempted to move it so it will end up just on the outside of the cubicle - this does mean it is closer to the door (and this must reduce extraction of the moist shower air) but I don't see a lot of choice unless I move it to a corner of the shower - which would mean its further from the door and any extraction would prioratise the shower, just feel uncomfortable jamming it in the corner though. Any hints from those who have mvhr greatfully accepted by the mvhr virgin. CC
  2. Nice beer? Saw it lurking there. Aldi are doing Double Dragon for £1.25 a bottle - imagine Nick was virtually weaned onto this stuff. Too far east from home for me to enjoy it - only realised this when I finished my second one last night. CC
  3. Its where the ducts break through the vcl when exiting the loft and then passing into the first floor. Prob going to use the board & tape idea.
  4. Got dewalt stuff. Never missed a beat. Most of it is recon (but otherwise new) stuff. Mates have got makita - none of us think there's any real difference. You stick to the make you buy first - batteries being the real reason. I would buy dewalt again if all my stuff got nicked.

  6. Morning Triassic, Thats the idea I had in mind although now I've started looking at grommets they start to look tempting. Any particular brand of EDPM tape you would suggest? Cheers, CC
  7. Thanks all for replies. Plenums will have to go in loft - no way to run duct around in first floor joists really. Support for plasterboard isnt the issue - being able to seal around the ducts that go down stairs through the first floor is the query really. Been looking at grommets but with around 10 to do, I was trying to see if a cheaper option existed first. I have a plan but I think it will be fiddly and time consuming. The real pain is where I've got several ducts all passing through through the vcl all in the same location - grommets will result in these being spread out. Need to have a play I guess.
  8. Evening all, MVHR has arrived & I've spent the day making a platform in the loft for it to sit on. Since its outside the vapour tight membrane the ducts will need to come down through it. Has anyone got a cunning plan for this? I wondered about getting some plywood, drilling appropriate sized holes for the ducts and then mounting the ply level with the joists - i should be able to get some silicone around the duct to help seal it. Then tape the whole lot. Overkill? Any observations / advise welcome. CC
  9. I've got one of those syma Drones- great fun but need to get one with a view finder really. They aren't so good once the outside is done.
  10. Her of course! Home automation for us normally means the other one has put the dish washer etc on.
  11. I've thought about changing the missus to an economic model! Cheaper and probably more fun I suspect - I just can't face all those years of intensive training though...
  12. No, just a missus that clearly doesn't realise we could do more fun things than spend our cash on leci!
  13. The thing that reminds me of home is the fact that all the lights are on, no matter how much I nag or turn them off, they still get left on with us.
  14. UFH was from Wanda so can give them a call. Thanks CC
  15. Cheers Nick. I have a spreadsheet I've written that does a heat loss calc for me. Its been accurate so far (this is my 5th heating system but first ufh). Was going to use some 10mm pipe to selected rads and 15mm on others so that's good news about the manifold. Where did you source them from? Hwyl, CC
  16. Agreed with ProDave etc, move it on. It could be draining a large area - how big a soak away do you need? You may now be responsible for safely disposing of this dirty (and potentially polluting) water! CC
  17. Hi Nick, Thanks for that advice - sounds good to me. I assume the rad circuit would need its own pump, the ufh manifold has its own pump - the pipes feeding it will be a reasonable distance and involve them rising around 2m in height so I assume they may also need an additional pump? Yet to work out heat loss upstairs but likely to be pretty low - how much would you oversize the rads to take account of the lower flow temps? 20%? Adapt the manifold to 15mm copper / plastic or use ufh pipe? and adapt at rad end? How big a TS? CC
  18. Hi all, Just looking for some views on what system we should put into our self build. Some details. Timber frame - walls at 0.14, floor 0.1, ceiling 0.1. Ufh downstairs with rads upstairs. Mains gas available. 4 bed, 3 bathrooms. May fit solar pv if we can get panels at the right price. Was thinking of gas boiler feeding into thermal store. Immersion top & bottom ready for pv or as a backup. Any thoughts? CC
  19. It's cheaper than paying a cleaner, cook and site slave.... Maybe not so daft!
  20. Marshall & Parsons Ltd on ebay is where I've bought my recon tools. So far they come out of the box like new - not a mark. One drill had issues getting into hammer mode & they sent a carrier to pick it up for repair - less hassle than if I'd bought it locally. If they havent got it advertised then if you phone them they will tell you if / when it's due in. That's where my multitool (Xmas essential) is going to be bought. Makita are great tools but not that good I feel the need to change from Dewalt. CC
  21. My stuff is Dewalt - no issues at all. I buy recon ones. CC
  22. Thinner insulation just behind the pipe & drill hole further back? CC
  23. I'm just surprised that QC was that sloppy. I now have the design. Pretty straight forward but wanted to see where the suggested extract / supply points are. Thanks for the comments. CC
  24. Hi, What would you all expect to receive with regards to MVHR design? The company I am (was?) going to use seem to be rather 'relaxed' so the email that came through with the design didn't have any layout for downstairs - I can cope without pipe runs (as long as they send plenty of pipe) but location of supply and extract would be useful. Rather surprised how little they have provided. Is this normal? Thanks for any observations / comments. Cc
  25. I've got the previous model - damn good. Tile adhesive, cement in a bucket etc is not a prob. Actually tempted to buy a spare. Good move. CC
