  1. Majority of builders/roofers would take the easy route and basically lay a flat roof but then a small area of fall local to the outlet, like a shower tray. Its not a big area of roof so if you work on the premise that some water will pool around the lanterns - with waterproof upstands. Saves a lot of work and expense putting all the falls in.
  2. Lanterns are always going to obstruct falls in at least one direction. Your idea is great in principal but as you fear the builder is unlikely to follow it to the letter and you probably end up with a flat roof with a lowered outlet.
  3. is this just how workers are, my 'high' expectations, or are they actually just being poor, and also the way forward. They are being unprofessional as a bare minimum, plus you are not allowing any wiggle room. Arranging follow on trades for the day after an expected completion is unrealistic. Paying them on day rates to disappear early etc is a breach of contract, Get hold of the owner of the company and point let them know whats going on (they may well be very aware anyway), keep good records of times etc. for later on. Dont burn your bridges too early.
  4. How deep/shallow is the sewer? If the kitchen floor level is 1300-1400 below road level, the kitchen waste would only be a metre or so below so you may be ok dependant upto length of run to get there.
  5. +1 on this, also door knockers on UPV sound bloody aweful.
  6. Hello and welcome, First bit of advice - dont believe what you see on TV, their budgets and costs and make believe. That aside, have fun, DIY is all about learning.
  7. Chicken wire will act as reinforcing and hold the screed together/stop it cracking, but do you really want or need to cut down on the thickness? As @MarkyP pointed out, reducing mass of a floor generally results in more movement.
  8. Highly unlikely they will accept an offer subject to survey or planning etc. Properties go to auction to save any hassle for the seller. Auction properties generally sell for less (although i have seen people pay well over the odds after getting auction fever) but the buyer takes a risk. Planning Consultant would (for a price) give you some pointers or an idea but not set in stone.
  9. Big increase in price and no real benefit unless your supplier is going to give you a discount or penalties based on phase load. I have 3 phase but use a standard Consumer Unit running on one phase for the house and only use the 3 phases for machines in my garage.
  10. Possibly wondering if he/she will be required or expected to split/balance phase loads
  11. You can get a pretty good weld with a gas less machine, We used to use big versions for welding structures in exposed locations where wind blew gas shielding away. The weld will never look as neat as a gas shielded equivalent but so much easier than lugging bottles around. The new inverter welding inits are so much more stable than the old machines too.
  12. Mig welding anything thin is not easy, add rust/dirt/paint etc and its a nightmare so dont knock yourself for struggling. Loads of people frown on the cheap gas less Migs but they can put down a descent weld with practice and so much easier than lugging a big plant around a site.

  14. Welcome and i love the Ranch look, well done
  15. Good morning and welcome
  16. Holy Crap! Ive seen some deep horizontal chases pass BCO but never at the bottom and only being short run. that needs sorting
  17. They dont look like fixing heads to me, more like pieces of grit or similar
  18. Sounds fair to me
  19. agree with the above comments.
  20. Really? thats good to know. Thank you.
  21. A CAD file includes all the precise setting out points and measurements etc. A PDF does not contain all the data required.
  22. In that case the water based paint will be fine ... and its easy to re coat or patch up if needed, unlike the resin based stuff
  23. Depends on what you are wanting the paint to do and how you will use your garage. Water based paints are easy to apply, no special precautions etc. and will stop all the dust and provide a nice clean finish. Buy really needs to be on clean concrete to `soak` in a bit. If you are going to do a lot of maneuvering and tyre scrubbing or use the area as a workshop then a water based finish will deteriorate fairly quickly.
  24. If steel is encased it doesnt need anything (think of rebar inside concrete). If its exposed then it can be either coated or not. Most new bridges are now left unpainted because it has been found that the rust layer protects better than deteriorating paint.
  25. Good morning and welcome, there are a number of useful books, The Self Build Manual, Self Build for Dummies and Self Build Bible (not sure i have the tiles exactly right). These give you a good background and insight into terminology and methods of construction etc. Project managing a build is very similar to other projects ... its basically planning what you think/hope will happen and then firefighting while things do happen. Loads of great info on here if you search topics as you need to.
