  1. Disc design is much better to use, slower on grass but faster on woody stemmed vegetation
  2. No problem pushing a bit more in for piece of mind,
  3. If rendering upto the metal frame on outside, then work on a removable closer on the inside to allow removal of the frame if needed. rare but it does happen
  4. GRP shouldn't crack unless severely twisted - think of all the GRP boats getting pounded by waves etc. Your roofers probably forgot to mention they had screwed through the GRP and it somehow cracked near the screw holes.
  5. OMG, use a proper blade, a brush cutter blade has (should have) been designed to limit the amount of grab.
  6. I would say thats a pretty neat job
  7. Couple of points to bear in mind 1) It is unlikely a flashing will be tight enough to the wall to draw water up. 2)The flashing (more upstand in this case) should be sealed to the horizontal surface and act as a tank.
  8. Looks good, and traditional, in keeping with the property. well done. I hate cleaning up after grouting

    Gate Pillars

Assuming its cast in concrete or cement/stone dust then 24 hours min, but 48 hours will be ideal - just be gentle with the edges until it fully cures
  10. I would definitely get some specialist input regarding the amount of sunlight / shadow etc. The rear wall will be a feat in itself and not cheap. Underpinning is pretty straight forward but underpinning and forming the basement wall in one requires a lot of engineering
  11. Best way to teach yourself to drive a digger is to cover up the decals showing you which function/lever movement is which - this way your brain has to react to what you see and feel rather than what you are reading. If im teaching anyone i always cover up the `instructions`
  12. Difficult to say as it all depends on the amount of rain and airbourne dirt that will be washed down off the glass etc.
  13. Small developments and self builds never go as planned, there are always details that wont work, clashes between trades etc. site works are flexible and can/will adapt as needs arise. Off site / pre fab requires every detail to be thought out and checked prior to fabrication and delivery. Sips Panels and kits are a bit different in that the supplier generally designs/details and erects their own product, but at a premium of course. It all really depends what you are wanting to achieve, fast build? reduced cost? etc etc.
  14. Agree with the above, pre fab works brilliantly for hotel builds etc. and pre fab Dormers etc are great to fit and save loads of grief on site. But for a small development the pre planning etc just isn't viable
  15. Where in the Country are you? Most developers are having a hard time at the moment, material and labour shortages are making many smaller projects uneconomical
  16. A cill pushed water away from the wall and allows it to fall. Flush fit windows are simple to seal but the staining down the wall can be horrendous.
  17. Timber, Steel and Bricks/Blocks are all rising fast. China has closed a lot of steel mills to push prices up so structures and roofing systems will increase. Copper, so tube and cable are rising rapidly. and timber is in short supply worldwide. Luckily we are fairing much better than many parts of Europe because their material costs are going sky high.
  18. Looks like you are confusing depth with area, or are you referring to depth on plan? as opposed to vertical depth? A larger area light well will allow more light in for more hours. Light wells are complex to get right, you need to look at orientation, shadow from other buildings, trees, fences etc.
  19. I feel for you, i am sick of seeing generic brick boxes being thrown up everywhere while MP`s score points talking about innovation, green issues and improving housing stock. South and West yorkshire - if you are a developer building boxes or a Gypsy you can have as much land as you want, self build? forget it. Can you imagine how far electric cars would have gone if finance companies wouldnt lend on them? mortgage lenders definitely need to come into the 21st century
  20. Had this conversation with someone the other day, they were under the impression once all electricity was from renewables then it would all be free because we don`t pay for the wind.
  21. Porcelin tiles are much harder than ceramics and more difficult to cut. grinder and diamond blade are the best bet. If tiles are small and fairly thin then the cutter you have should be ok
  22. istead of allowing the water to cling to the underside of soffit area and then into the wall
  23. No specific size for a drip groove, just needs to form drips
  24. When you say an old concrete slab, how old? is it insulated? UFH and old floors are not a good combination.
