  1. In my new-build house one of the upstairs bedroom windows has ended up with a bottom edge a little higher than the mandated 1100mm - which was picked up by the Building Standards officer on his sign-off visit. The architect's drawings were correct, but the joiner got it wrong by about 100mm. Moving the window down will be a nightmare [it's a Velux in the slate roof], the joiner/builder has retired, and the mess/disruption would be phenomenal [the house is finished, plastered, decorated] , so I want to install a step under the window to raise the floor height. The Technical Handbook simply states the 1100mm rule and is silent on the use of a step, but the officer says he thinks it's unlikely to be approved. I've seen a precedent for using a step approved/recommended by an authority in England, but that won't wash with the inspectors here in The Highlands. Does anyone have any advice or, better still, a real example of where this approach has been signed-off in Scotland?
  2. Hi Everyone I'm nearing the end of my first self-build project: a timber framed, larch clad, slate roofed 1.5 storey 4bed house in the Scottish Highlands. We have air-source heat pump and underfloor heating, plus MVHR which means there's less need to open windows - especially during the midge season! You could say my specialist subject is Ikea as nearly every room has some Ikea stuff in it, including the kitchen which has turned out very well. The MVHR has been interesting too, with some lessons learned after the first winter of it being in use. I've got an impending issue with the final Building Standards sign-off, which I'll post separately in a relevant forum. All the best!
