Can you not use some of those bricks, or even sell them on.

Timber I beam construction longevity.

Getting back to the original question on i joists, I have i joist off cuts that have been sitting in a pile for over 6 months out in all this rain and they look perfect. -
Dig it all up, chuck it through a small mobile crusher then spread it all back on the ground then when you mark out your footprint you just dig through it. It seams a bit of a waste but it pays for itself over and over with having a nice working platform and no mud.

Decent MVHR install video
Russell griffiths replied to JFDIY's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
We all like different things, I have deliberately never put up my floor plans as I know some people wouldn’t like them, so what I’m building it for me not them. If you like your lindab gutters then that’s great. I personally don’t it’s not that you have crap taste, just different to me. -

It’s a good job I’ve got skin like a rhino or I might get offended. -
Detailing insulation / VCL below internal stud walls
Russell griffiths replied to andyscotland's topic in Heat Insulation
Why not get some eps300 and substitute the insulation under the sole plate with this, just a 300mm wide strip with the pir betting up to the sides of it. -
Reinforced Concrete Design
Russell griffiths replied to oz93666's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
You need the reinforcement to be completely covered in concrete, fixing them to the smooth plastic will not allow concrete to in case the steel, so rendering its reinforcement properties to nil. The steel should be spaced away from the sides to allow at least 15mm of concrete cover. You might be better of winding this steel together to create a wire rope, and then positioning this central in the tube. -

If you look back at all Robins videos I think he shows the build up of his roof, he did a video of installing the roof lanterns, not sure if you have any. Robin is part of the skill builder team and does some good carpentry videos. -

I do agree that Lindab stuff is horrid and it’s not cheap. -
Wow those links are close together @gc100 whats the spacing?
-
I had mine all bent and cut and fabricated into cages, I could not believe how cheap it was. I had allowed £3-4 grand for steel and it came in at about £1500. It all depends on how precious your time schedule is, I think to have bent all mine up would have been at least an extra 20 days work.
-
I would disagree with this, you said the other day you thought you could bend 60 links in a day, ok cool but at a £1 a link is your day only worth £60 to you. Mimimum wage is more than that.

Im intrigued now, can you not do it tonight @Charly

Did they cover those solid builds with a bitumen paint before plaster, is that what we can see??? as it does look a bit more solid the more I look. Hope you not going to make me cut my right one off if I’m wrong.
-
@Declan52 you chicken, just had a thought @Charly is your house poured concrete, ash type construction. As there’s no way I can see that arch being structural it’s far too flat to be structural brickwork, but it could be one of those flyash concrete type mixes where they poured them between shuttering. Take me off more plaster where a lintel may be.

If anybody intends living on site I strongly recommend watching a you tube couple called. PURE LIVING FOR LIFE. look at how they have built an outbuilding in front of the door to their caravan and fitted a woodburner. Be careful not to copy any of their building practices as he is a total dork and cocks everything up, but the shed in front of the caravan is brilliant and will turn a miserable winter into a nice jolly place to be. I actually have the same same situation on our current house, cold miserable bungalow but add a bootroom with wood burner and it’s transformed, dry clothes warm and cosy dogs, non moaning wife.

Floor drain for accidental flood
Russell griffiths replied to Raks's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
can anybody say what they don’t like about this. This is how my 3 bathrooms where plumbed in my last place, I would like to do the same again. Tell me why not. -
Get a hammer and smash it into the curved bit, I will bet my right one it’s metal mesh with plaster over it, or plasterboard cut to a curve plastered over. So in effect the arch is a dummy and performs no structural function. Go on dare ya.

Depends how bad your weather is, down here I would just cover the top couple of courses.

Floor drain for accidental flood
Russell griffiths replied to Raks's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
I am actually having a floor drain in every wet area of the house, I did ask a question about it a good while ago but had very little response as it’s just not an English thing to do. -
Scaffolding needed?
Russell griffiths replied to Tyrone's topic in Lofts, Dormers & Loft Conversions
Do yourself a favour and have a full scaffold front and back, it will cost a fortune you will hate paying for it, you will question your logic at the beginning. But at the end you will stand there and say it was worth every penny and you cannot believe you contemplated doing it from a tower it will save you time, be massively safer. Have you thought of buying your own quick stage scaffolding. I bought £5000 worth and it will go for sale with a very little loss, so the hire cost over the time our build took will be insignificant.- 1 reply

Looks like a nice plot, i took a load of scrap down and was happy to just chuck it out, but the girl insisted I go on the weigh bridge, after I unloaded she gave me a cheque for £40, I couldn’t believe the scrap value of steel I thought it was hard to get rid of.
-
There ya go, no need for a new one, just a tidy up. I was told to never render any brickwork on the inside of anything, as if it falls off it will Block up pipes and things. You can probably buy a standard cover for that.

Sticky, sticky tape required
Russell griffiths replied to Russell griffiths's topic in Building Materials
Smashing job, thanks for all the replies. -
I boarded my ceiling in Australia with 6m boards, if I could buy them in this backwards country I would use them again.
