So you put up your second hand timber and a couple (all) the studs have a bit of a bow in them that’s ok grab your electric plane and wizz a bit of OH DRAT AND BLAST, you found a buried nail. DONT DO IT. then you build a wall out of the old crap and your two studs short, so you go to the timber yard, unfortunately your old 6x2 is no longer sold it’s 147 x47 which when actually measured is closer to 145x47 if you are building a new house don’t spoil it for the sake of a couple of hundred.

District heating via ASHP/GSHP

Have you looked at the cost of that insulated pipe. It would be cheaper to have an ASHP for every building. -
Looking to Build and Eco Home on a Budget
Russell griffiths replied to Pemu's topic in Introduce Yourself
Hi, what sort of budget do you have and what part of London i cant see you getting a basement for under £75-100 grand party wall agreement, having to hold next doors house in position whilst you dig out for the basement, muck away costs. I think a basement in Shepherd’s Bush would be twice the cost of one out in Northamptonshire just trying to be a realist. -
planning permission for a boat?
Russell griffiths replied to scottishjohn's topic in Planning Permission
My neighbour did just this with a house boat, big crane= boat in lake. He always laughs as he tells me of when the kids where growing up they would go to bed at one end of the lake and he would chug of down the other end and wake up in a different bit. He has recently done the same and just brought another narrow boat that he has moored up in a backwater. -
Don’t do it, for the tiny cost of stud work timber you will cost yourself more the first time you hit a nail with your circular saw blade i have never found second hand timber to work out money wise.

Nails, silicon bronze, or stainless steel
Russell griffiths replied to Russell griffiths's topic in Building Materials
At this moment it’s for fitting facia boards, cladding will be many months away. -
As the title said, I have been reading up on fixings for our cedar cladding. So stainless steel looks like the go to product, although silicon bronze is used for fixing cedar shingles, I’m afraid stainless steel will look too bright. Anybody used the silicon bronze as I’ve never really come across them. Cheers peeps.

1.5 storey new build, timber frame or masonry?
Russell griffiths replied to Olly P's topic in New House & Self Build Design
Have a look on a site called houzz for inspiration. But be careful it can get expensive. -
With regards the uneven walls @Nelliekins have you looked at an eps rasp, it’s like a massive surform that can rip down the surface to make it nice and flat before rendering mark out your stairs roughly and smooth out any high areas. I have just ripped down a couple of high spots before fitting internal floors, works a treat.

Three pours down..none to go - thank goodness

You get about a 1/3 m out of the pump lines when they clean them through @Adam2, a good idea is to have someplace to put it, shutter up a box for the chicken coup to sit on or make a base for the wheelie bins, I have 3 posts that hold up our carport that sit on concrete pads, so pre dug some very rough holes ready for the overspill. You need to nominate a washdown area for the pump guy, plastic on the floor with a sheet of ply on top so it’s easy to shovel up the mess. Its all relatively straight forward with a bit of planning. -
Staircase tread covering stuff.

Staircase tread covering stuff.

Ooh yuk. -
I don’t even think radiators are worth a second thought. Just from the point of view that they take up wall space, I wouldn’t ever consider them.
-
That’s how I did mine, vey straight forward.

I would think the wooden kits will have very poor structure to the walls so adding insulation will be a pain, gat a proper frame built and insulate it to a good spec. As a side thought, can you insure a wooden outbuilding for contents insurance, I know my insurance company insists that it is brick built if covering tools.

How about overboarding with a marine grade plywood. 11mm ?? This could benefit you if it is carried through to any bathrooms, as it could be used as a carrier board for floor tiling or other surfaces. This could be something that you may have had to do, so could get it done at no cost to you and some cash back as a compensation.

Any chance of some details for the company who did the flashings. Thanks.

Do a slump test. Oh yea what for?? please explain how you think that is going to work in your favour. It wont. Lets look at it. Your concrete plant is 35minutes drive away your pump turns up at £600 for the day you need 22m of concrete to do your first lift first truck turns up and you do a slump test and all is good, so you pour in 7.5m, truck buggers off back to depot second truck turns up 45mins later you do a slump test, oh dear it’s a bit wetter than it said in my spec, I know I will phone up and moan and send it back. So of goes the driver with his slightly too wet concrete, leaving you on the phone having a rant at the man in the batching plant (who couldn’t give a shit by the way) the batching plant will tell you that they don’t have a spare truck available so you will need to wait for the mix to be tipped out and re mixed. The truck returns. This has taken the best part of a couple of hours, so it’s now 12.45 and you have got to get in 2 more truck loads, what I am getting at is if you set out your expectations so high something will fail leaving you in the poo. Learn to deal with what comes your way, brace the crap out of everything, then you can deal with with however the concrete is. Ask for it to come drier than your spec and adjust it on site. I have just put 39m of concrete in a nudura build, just 2 lifts up to 5.3m high. Didnt lose more than a bucket full.

Does the council class DIY as Construction
Russell griffiths replied to ultramods's topic in Building Regulations
If they are having to put up with construction noise in the week, wouldn’t it be nice to give them a break at the weekend. It depends what tool you are using and when, nail gun at 7pm, nope your not being a nice neighbour. Doing some painting at 9pm what’s the problem i think you need to evaluate each job and work out if you would like it, I personaly would have the hump with you.
