  1. 5th (6th?) Christmas on this board and still, every single month grateful for the generosity that this board seems to have in store for all who care to venture here. Giving is at the centre of what happens here - mostly advice: and thats as priceless as gold frankincense and myrrh Thanks everyone for the help you gave me. I'm really grateful.

  2. An airfix Spitfire hanging from the ceiling, but next summer I get to fly in a real one. Merry Christmas everyone.

  3. I've had to replace a couple this month. One thing I've noticed in the past is that knocking an LED bulb seems to make it much more likely to fail, although with a delayed response. YMMV. At least the prices have come down. I hate CFLs so switched to LEDs early; I have memories of paying £20/bulb or so.

  4. Trifle is in the fridge trifling and mulled wine is on the stove mulling. We have a big year ahead of us with our build finally starting. I’ve learnt so much already from this great forum and will be asking a lot more questions once we get going. Thank you all for making this place the best resource there is for the self-builder. Merry Christmas everyone. I wish you and yours all the best.

  6. Christmas came early for you then eh? Triple bay workshop: if I had one SWMBO would never see me ever. (She's praying for one too 😐) I mean just imagine the sheer bliss of putting a tool down and then a few days later see it still lying there. Space for a work-surface just a bit bigger than 8 by 4 and having space to walk round it ..... gotta stop now - envy is ugly. Enjoy it. And Christmas. Ian

  7. A VCR with a wired remote... To this day my Dad doesn't know that we used to swing it round and use it as a skipping rope!

  9. This seems to be the bane of these units, the way the error is handled and reported, is in my opinion poor. First the context please? Is this a new install? or an old install that has run for a long time and only just started throwing this error? Is it UFH, radiators or a mixture? I had this problem right from the start. The two issues were nowhere in the manual did it state what the minimum water flow rate was, and there was no means to measure it. A phone call to LG told me it was about 10 litres per minute approximately that it needs to see, but there was a bit of tolerance in the actual value the flow switch registers as okay. I then installed a flow meter so I could actually see the flow rate I was achieving and it was only just enough. So I installed a second circulating pump in the house in addition to the one inside the ASHP which improved the flow rate and solved the issues.

  10. It’s got nothing to do with building control, as long as your cables are in the proper safe zones, and properly supported. If I was doing mine again I would do it like on the continent with a large duct that I can pull new cables through.

  11. greetings all. i managed to find someone to install my ASHP and it is now up and running. all that's plumbed in at the moment is the UFH in the basement. i've started it out at a flow temp of 20°C and the plan was to ramp it up by 5°C every week to aid in the drying out. The screed was laid Feb 2022 so it's been down for quite a while now. my question to you all is "Is it still necessary to do a gradual drying out regime?". Factors to consider are that the flood water would've got under the screed and in to the PIR i would presume. Also, i would presume that the concrete screed also absorbed quite a bit of water. would that absorbed water increase the risk of cracking the screed even this far down the line from laying? can i bump up the flow temperature more rapidly?

  13. You have a very different household to me. At times our 300L tank is barely enough. Our showers can run in excess of 10L per minute so you are expecting a woman with long hair to shower, wash, rinse and condition their hair in 8 minutes. You have not met my wife and daughter. Double that time and water consumption and my 300L tank barely does 2 lady showers, certainly not if it has done 1 much shorter man shower first. Tell them to turn it down to a trickle and they don't see why they have to put up with sub standard. And nearly 2 hours to re heat it "sorry dear you have to wait 2 hours if you want a shower as well" lands you in the dog house. Oh and most ASHP's (probably all) stop heating the house when they heat the hot water. Ours likes to only do DHW in half hour chunks. You can fiddle with parameters to make it do DHW for longer before reverting to space heating.

  14. Working brilliantly. Keeping the house at 18-19 mostly on economy 7 overnight with an additional 4 hours in middle of day. If we had curtains/blinds it would be even less. No issues meeting the required flow temps. Air temp hasn't been over zero for several days. Can't complain.

  15. So your max heat demand in w/m2 is 1541/144=say 11w/m2 Using the attached you get the flow temp you need, but the chart needs extending downwards, mean flow temps are low/mid 20s. That is to balance heat loss with heat input. If you want to blast heat and use a thermostat just add a couple of extra degrees.

  16. I did this with my JCB, didn’t cut the cable just folded it tight and the inner core pushed through the insulation which really surprised me with a buried cable, called out the engineers, explained that I, a poor, OAP was trying to build my own house, lots of tea and coffee (and bull shit) and I never got a bill 👍

  17. Quick update. So the consensus on here and the www is 'bronze pump' for the hot return. I didn't want to speculate further so I called Wilo to get some answers. Wilo technical confirmed that it is the incorrect pump for a hot return circuit and that after time I would get rusty water from the taps and finally a pump failure. Why on earth would the very knowledgable and highly skilled plumber fit the incorrect pump to our hot return circuit? He must have known what he was doing? The list price of the incorrect fitted pump is £120. The list price for the correct pump is £548. (That £548 is the list price for a Wilo SB60, a Wilo SB30 would probably do what is required with ease and can be had for £162)

  19. Hopefully somebody can help me as we have something stuck in our chimney breast and I can’t light the fireplace until we remove it. Not helping the Christmas spirit not having a fire. It’s big, red with a white border, although there are two dangly bits that look covered in what appear to be red and white stripey stockings. Leather bits at the end of the dangly bits.

  20. Brought me in mind of an old Bernard Maning joke I saw online Santa climbed down the chimney to be met by a dolly bird who asked if he would like to stay for a bit He declined as he had a busy night ahead She then took off all her cloths He said I’ll have to stay now as I won’t get back up the chimney 😂
