  1. Can anybody recommend a liquid applied roofing membrane, the type that you add a mesh or a matting to for strength. I would like something that you sort of roller apply, then lay matting to and then roller again. This is for a porch roof with very minimal fall, outside the house so cold roof, substrate either ply or osb. Cheers russ.
  2. Batten, cement board and render is certainly a way to do it, but I wouldn’t want it. Cavity, concrete blocks, render has anybody done a price comparison?? those cement boards are not cheap, then the fixings are not cheap, then the bagged render is not cheap concrete blocks are not that expensive to have laid and is a far more robust detail IMHO.
  3. If he has strip foundations, he won’t need a raft. There could be some confusion here with terminology.
  4. How can you use the icf walls to retain the slab ?? what are the icf blocks sitting on??
  5. 1/2 bottle of jack Daniels and I don’t care where I sit.
  6. @JSHarris I have been doing the, how much does the builder squash the eps when he stands on it test today, all 70kg of me barely puts a dent in it. I have been thinking of making a cill pan to go under my windows for extra weather protection and I think this combined with all the side fixings and the strength of the eps itself will be plenty, I think I will be leaving it alone.
  7. You are nearly as inventive as me @scottishjohn but not there yet keep trying. Going to cut out 90mm diameter holes in the eps, then fit a 90mm fibreglass tube, then replace the bit I cut out into the centre of the tube. So in effect I will have little fibreglass load cells every 300mm along length of window.
  8. My neighbours workshop is Douglas Fir, it looks very good and was a good price also.
  9. I suppose it depends how rustic you want it to look, my neighbour has just built a huge 500m workshop all clad board on board, it looks very good but it does have a rustic character to it, it would never go with what we have in mind, but probably cost him a quarter of what ours will. I think it really depends on the LOOK you are after.
  10. Buy the 18 volt dewalt and I will have it off you in 4-5 months time. ?
  11. Hi, 90% of the windows we are looking at are Ali clad timber, is it possible to get an all aluminium window that comes near the spec of timber Ali clad or is this just snake oil marketing. Ta very much.
  12. You really are top shelf @JSHarris a proper legend. ????
  13. I do hope you will have time to make more of that excellent marmalade.
  14. Frame width is 4200mm @JSHarris i was going to do the sums to tonight, and ask the window company on Friday.
  15. @Adam2 I plan to support my doors on marmox blocks, I would not even consider using wood under your doors. I was just a bit concerned when a window quote came in and it included weight of the windows, I have 2 that are around 400kg a piece.
  16. They will be attached to straps, but I cannot see how a strap attached at 90 degrees to the load stops the load going downwards, yes the straps hold the windows in place, but a couple of hundred kilos of glass must need support from underneath ???? meeting with a couple of window suppliers this week, I will ask them.
  17. 430kg window, 3.1m long. So 430 kg divided by 3, so 143kg per m sitting on a frame 90 odd mm wide. I dunno am I over thinking this it looks a lot. Im not looking forward to moving them.
  18. Can anybody point me at some high density insulation, I’m looking for something to take a high load so I can sit my windows on it, I’m having a good look around but just wondering if anybody had used anything.
  19. Evening all. So fitting windows in a icf wall. My cill area is made up using the cavity closer system from the icf manufacturer (nudura) so I end up with a concrete core and 50mm of eps on top which closes the cavity and forms a no cold bridge type of design, super dooper however im concerned over the weight of the windows sitting down onto this eps insulation, will they sink over time?? im thinking I need something to spread the load over the eps, something like a cement board, or even a sheet of upvc or something, I have considered removing the closer and replacing it with a higher density xps type insulation. Please see pic.
  20. thanks all, another stupid rule that can be interpreted in many ways what a crock no wonder mass housing is in such a state if you can bend stuff to fit your agenda.
  21. Who the bloody hell writes this stuff. Why can they not be clear every rule can be read in a different context depending on how you look at things.
  22. That would be my common sense approach to it @JSHarris but is laminated glass not mandatory in part Q of the building regs.
  23. So looking at part q building regs, has everybody had laminated glass fitted to all doors and windows at ground floor level. Seems massively over kill to me, what have you all done.
  24. Hi @craig Doing a lot of reading, and still not as clear cut as I would like so let’s say I have a window that is in a downstairs room, bottom of window is 600mm from floor, this would require TOUGHENED GLASS for inner pane, and LAMINATED GLASS for outer pane. Is this correct???
