hi, are you sticking with standard 145mm kit or trying to get a better u value? even with a standard kit, if you internally clad in osb such as propassive glued to kit and glued joints, you could acheive a good level of airtightness and then have a service cavity. realistically it shouldn't cost double for the kit to passive standards. price the fitting of the insulation (neatly done to avoid cold spots) against blown insulation and i don't think there will be much difference.

very nice, couple of questions about the 2nd pic., the first step looks to be a different rise to others (may be foreshortening) and what are you doing for a baluster? -

if you have a high water table then water will be seeping in and running down to the sewer continually. -
if you're doing a slab why not go for a raft, we did strip and b&b which had 200mm of celotex on top then 100mm screed. wish we could have done a raft would have been a lot cheaper. the only advice i can give with b&b is that if you need to join them in their length, build a double thickness wall to support them and therefore join them end to end as opposed to staggered. it will save a lot of time in cutting blocks to fit. ask me how i know......

@JamesFlannery i would take a disc and cut back the render around the window/door to see whether the quoins are all the way down. if they are, cut neatly around and expose them. paint render to finish and leave as is. it's always been a door.

get him to fix his mistakes and don't pay him for the time it takes! good job it's a paint finish. are they bearing hinges you're fitting?

Advice on attic ceiling junction with wall
Simplysimon replied to Drew1000's topic in Plastering & Rendering
even better for that scenario would have been to order imperial sheets and fit vertically, however, i would have kept one sheet tight to ceiling the other tight to wall and infilled the centre. -

Years ago, how did they .... ?
Simplysimon replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
that was a poor demonstration on saw sharpening, didn't keep the file at the same angle and sharpened them the same amount which may or may not happen. he also only sharpened it with a rip cut, to do a tenon/dovetail saw requires three goes along its length and should never need a diamond hone to finish. @ProDave the tool for making holes was a rawl plugging tool, with three 'lugs' wich gave three grooves for waste material and as you said, hit, rotate, repeat until deep enough. there was then a fibrous material in a long strip which was cut to length and fitted in the hole., then came a plastic strip which them bacame a plastic plug. damn i'm showing my age! -
