  1. I used the Linda Barker range for my bathroom. Was very impressed with it. It cost me £125 for each sheet.
  2. Put in for 2/3 weeks sick leave/holidays from his current place of work. Find a building site close to his home and see if he can get a start doing anything. Labourer, driving a dumper, helping brickies wherever it is won't really matter. Its just to get a flavour of what working on a building site involves. You can earn a very decent wage but you will have to do a lot of hard, dirty physical work to get it. You can't do any apprenticeship at the moment cause they are closed so it's the only way to get some experience. When the few weeks is up he should know if it's for him or not. Then you can start looking at doing a course in the tech to learn to become a joiner, brickie, plumber etc. But remember the wages he will get while still learning won't be a lot. Your talking 5-8 years further down the line before he will have enough skill and knowledge built up to get a job finished quickly and of a high enough standard to start making money.
  3. Should have used windolene instead of tape.
  4. Put the 50mm down first as it's easier to cut round any pipework that's on the subfloor going to sinks etc.
  5. How was it supplying enough air to keep the fire going without the intake duct?? You have been really through the mill and badly let down by the installer and now the complaints procedure. I don't blame you for not wanting to drop this.
  6. Who are you getting a price from?? Try Quinn's in ardboe, ATS in Portadown and Murdock's. I used ATS and they where great.
  7. Just buy the attic truss and insulate it the way you originally intended to. Installation won't be much extra cause you will still need a crane to lift them anyway. In 10-15 years time one of your kids might need somewhere to setup a home/ business and then they can sort out upgrading it with electrics, plumbing and insulation. You will have done the important bit with the attic truss. In the meantime you will have a good storage space so can use the garage for its intended purpose, a bar with a pool table and large TV.
  8. I like brick quoins as well but just 2 looks wrong.
  9. You can take the flag down though. What are you going to do with the two weird yellow brick quoins on each side of the house. It looks like when the built the single course round the house they had a few left over and went sure I will stick them in this random position and the foreman stood back and went yep that looks really different, do the rest of the development like that.
  10. Stop trying to please your neighbours. The more you try to appease them the more they will want. You can make as much noise as you want from 8am-6pm Mon to Fri and there is nothing they can do about it. Just walk away when them come out and if they confront you keep your temper. Tell them to phone the police/ council if they have an issue with the noise. With how there is so many shortages of every kind of material used in building you have just hit the wrong time. There isn't much your builder can do if a particular item has a very long waiting time due to the present circumstances. I have been on many many sites and shat always happens and things go pear shaped and it's the client who ends up waiting a bit longer. If the guys doing the work are worth keeping then don't sour a good relationship. What if you confront them and they decide to walk away. By the time you find new builders and go through that stress are you really prepared to fight in court over a contract that a judge might find in the builders favour. So you could end up with a build finished much later and a legal bill. Its always nicer to sit down with tea and hob knobs( chocolate ones) and have a chat.
  11. I've seen a lot worse for sale made by a pro.
  12. It will depend on how much you have to fill. Well compacted clean hardcore up to a certain depth then you will have any insulation, dpm and then the finished floor. So you need to firstly get your finished height worked out then from that take away the items above and that will be the top of the hardcore. Eg. Finished floor - 100mm Insulation - 150mm??? What exactly is this building going to be used for, another shed for storing crap or fixing cars or a summerhouse and BBQ area?? If it's just a shed then you won't need insulation but in the future it might come in handy for other uses and it's going to be much easier to put in now.
  13. Rip saw blades have up to 40 teeth and generally cut very harshly and remove larger chips as it cuts. Cross cut blades will have up to 80 teeth and leave a nicer finish but will cut much slower. A rip saw blade down a fence board won't leave a smooth edge.
  14. All metal lintels bend slightly when you build across them that's why you prop it until the work above it sets. In normal circumstances it wouldn't really matter but with your bi folds it will depend on how much deflection has occurred. It doesn't look that much from the pics.
  15. Then that's even easier then. Setup up an access point in your new build that has a cable running to your Virgin router. Then upgrade the speed package to one that will suit both your needs.
  16. Can you not do a multi room type setup where your other room is next door. Pay for it in the present house then when it's time to move over then run a cable over to the new house. Add the cost of 50% of the bill on to the rental agreement.
  17. 150mm is perfect for brick. 2* 75mm (65mm brick + 10mm motar)
  18. On this pic there is Def something wrong with the ufh pipes. You can see they aren't sitting flat with a very noticeable bump. Was there subfloor beneath the insulation not left flat and smooth. Get a hammer drill and drill through the subfloor at this point. Going by the pics you should be enough away from any ufh pipes. If this is 30mm then it's up to you. Digging it all out will damage the ufh pipes though which will need redone. How much height is there between the floor as it sits now and the bottom of the door. If you have 30mm you could rough the floor up with a hammer and bolster, apply a primer and put more concrete on it. You can also use self leveling compound that has fibres in it for this depth.
  19. A double skin wall with a pier every 5m would be much cheaper. So a pier at both ends and at 5m,10m and 15m.
  20. The only solution I found was to close the blinds and not let the sun in. Open the windows at night to let the cooler air in.
  21. Wish we got paid for the days spent waiting about years ago. We just loaded out the house with bricks and blocks and got everything ready. Or I helped out where ever else jobs needed done on site. Its how I learned most of the jobs to a good enough standard to be able to do my house when the time come .
  22. Maybe the site supervisor is the only one there that actually knows what they are doing. With him going for personal reasons, everyone has issues that need to be dealt with from time to time, he could have instructed those left behind to not do any thing important that can't be easily fixed. It leaves you as the client in a pickle though. A one last chance ultimatum to the company owner that your job is falling behind schedule and if he can't get the right people to the job on time then you will have to part ways. Be calm and precise and leave him knowing that this can't continue.
  23. Please use standard text for your replies.
  24. A squirt of fairy liquid would do no harm for that amount.
  25. It gets fully filled when the scratch coat goes on.
