Heat Pumps & Hydrogen Powered Boilers Book
Declan52 replied to Des Ingham's topic in Introduce Yourself
The Republic of Ireland had the right idea. They brought forward much stricter building regs and introduced a new standard where all new homes being built from 2020 had to be low energy homes. In order to have gas installed you had to overcome that many hurdles that a heat pump was the preferred option. Oil boilers in New builds will be banned from 2022 and gas 2025. So they are already miles further down the path than the UK are. A standard new build house built by a large developer in the UK isnt going to be suitable for a heat pump as they will have just scraped past the poor building regs we have. In Eire they are suitable. Changing the regs is the only real solution along with actually testing each house performance not just 1 in every 20. To get round the issue of older housing stock if you are doing a renovation then in order to meet the much higher building regs the government will give you a grant to install towards EWI and better Windows and what ever else you want to do. -

Roof access / safe trimming of wooden eaves
Declan52 replied to markocosic's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Hire out a few boxes of scaffolding and do it right. No hanging of ropes tied to chimney stacks or the neighbours tree type operations. You will be able to get a much better look at what is needed and then actually do the work right plus much much safer. For the sake of a few hundred quid do it safe. -
Repairing my defective thin coat render.
Declan52 replied to ProDave's topic in Plastering & Rendering
Would you get pin holes like when you use too much of plasterciser making motar and put too much air into the mix making it like fluff. Does anything like this get added to the render to help playability or is it premixed into it. -
Glass splashback or . . .
Declan52 replied to canalsiderenovation's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
There is bound to be some sort of clip/bracket type system that you could use. Then silicone around the edge to seal it up. -
Glass splashback or . . .
Declan52 replied to canalsiderenovation's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
You could get a design/ artwork printed and use this as a decorative piece which will then be covered and sealed by the glass covering. Wouldn't be too expensive to get a few fixing holes drilled in the glass. -
Not enough glue in 22mm Egger Chipboard installation?
Declan52 replied to Adsibob's topic in Floor Structures
Find the last section of board in the final run and take the screws out and try and lift the board out. You will quickly be able to see if it's got any glue. -
Not enough glue in 22mm Egger Chipboard installation?
Declan52 replied to Adsibob's topic in Floor Structures
If they used d4 glue there is no chance that floor will come up. D4 glue expands and will come out of the edges of the boards. It will be very noticeable. I would get them to do as he suggested and pull the screws out enough to lift the board up and allow a bead of D4 glue, not some cheap ass alternative wood glue, to be put on top of the joists. -
You could try grinding a few mm of the concrete to create the channel needed. In effect all you would be doing is polishing the surface. If that fails then your going to have to cut it out.

Screening Ideas to Block Chronic Curtain-Twitchers
Declan52 replied to harry_angel's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
I don't make the law it's just how it is. A relative has the same kind of issues with neighbours and the camera that covers their back garden only covers it and no other persons property and the police where happy. The one or the front as it covers a path and road needs a sign to inform people that they are being recorded. https://ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-using-cctv/ -

Declan52 replied to harry_angel's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
You are allowed cameras as long as it picks up your property and no one else's. If you cover another person's property or public areas like a path or road then you have to put up signs informing people they are being recorded. -

Screening Ideas to Block Chronic Curtain-Twitchers
Declan52 replied to harry_angel's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
Use different shrubs to form a screen around your seated area. So you have something growing up to 2m around 2/3 sides giving you and area which is totally private. You can use a pergola as a frame and have slotted sides using lath. Use the same idea along where you mainly walk. Small trees or large shrubs to form a thick screen. It will require quite a bit of planning to figure out which plant will grow to a specific height and put it in the correct position. Your never going to block out a line of site from a first floor window without planting something that will be huge but by concentrating on certain sections you could do it with smaller, 2m ish, planting. -
Reckon you could have fried soda bread on that roof this past week. Looks really good.

Seeking advice re standard of roofing work
Declan52 replied to dave1899's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
They would be nailed to the batton but as they are so small they have to have used some sort of adhesive otherwise the first bit of wind you get they are going on their holidays and not coming back.- 45 replies

How are the tiny pieces of tile held in place??- 45 replies

Our council was pretty quick, think it took 6 weeks. But as you say the way things are now they are all working from home ( sunbathing in their garden in this weather) so would guess 8-10 weeks.

They really should be started on the concrete foundations. 50mm of screed is not a lot to rest a wall on. What type of screed are you using, sand cement or a flow type screed??

Realistic U-values of brick & block?
Declan52 replied to bgmill's topic in New House & Self Build Design
It's not just about ticking a box with 150/200mm insulation in the cavity and you will have a toasty house. Lol You have to adopt a whole house policy. High quality Windows and doors, triple glazed of the budget allows, good depth of insulation in the floor and roof, very good airtightness throughout etc. I've a block house and my kids still move around like hippos and slam doors. After years of in depth research the final conclusion I have reached to stopping them slamming doors is to remove the door. -
Every two weeks!!! Some company is making a fortune with that schedule.

Seeking advice re standard of roofing work
Declan52 replied to dave1899's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Not a lot of work and can all be done from the inside. Pop the window out and remove the inside row of tiles that are cut short. Replace with tiles that rest on the foam and are long enough to bridge the gap so it sits over the ridge. That's the easy bit. The ugly lead work won't be as easy fixed.- 45 replies
