Hi Nick, just back home for dinner so just a quick response for now. Dont think we will put pv on - done the calcs and the payback is very dependant on what % of generation is used, and my calcs suggest 10 to 15 yr payback - too long for us so I would discount pv. If the fit hadn't reduced we would put it in for sure. The choice seems to therefore be a 250 uvc + 100 buffer or ~ 250 or 300 TS. Back to site now, will read again later on. Cheers for your advice - appreciated.

Life is going to be dull again when this bathroom is done. ? -
Pics are interesting of the MBC stuff. If we had only known about them......... Good luck and enjoy the experience.

High @Nickfromwales, ok, good explanation. Got the link - I'm in but I just want to check with the plumber doing the installation on Tuesday that he's happy with a Telford cylinder (he normally uses megaflow tanks). He may prefer it to be a pre plumbed one since he lives Q far away and is doing the installation as a favour. If we put a buffer tank in (got the room for it & more than happy to do it) - would 80 or 100litres be enough? I assume the buffer should have an immersion (just in case / if we put pv in) and I assume it would need tappings for the ufh and the rads? (do these need separate ones? - rads higher up the tank for hotter temps and the ufh lower down?). The rads would need a pump as well since the boilers pump would only be used to pump to the buffer tank. Would a TS be easier? I'm < 30 mins from Telford tanks - does that help with the group deal (pretty sure they wont deal direct)?

It is a good pint, reared on it so I could be biased but I am addicted to Theakston Old Peculiar....... when is Aldi going to stock it again? -
Hi Nick, Telford rep called around - nice chap but didnt really clarify the situation. I've phoned WB & they said that a 21kw boiler (can deal with the hot water reheat requirement time) can modulate down to 7.2kw & that there wouldnt be an issue with short cycling (heating demand of 5kw). The 18kw was ~ 6kw min. Phoned Sam Fosket at Telford Cylinders - and he didnt think short cycling would be an issue because the house is well insulated / airtight so the room temps would only decline slowly and therefore not be calling for heat that frequently - you were right he was good. I've settled for an 18kw boiler and a 250l uvc. If needed there is room for a buffer cylinder if required. Will use Telford for the cylinder and WB for the boiler. Hope this helps @Silage with his deliberations.

Some agric shed manufacturers use that grey paint rather than red oxide. Isnt it supposed to dry quickly?

Feel gutted for you. We are a bit more trad - timber frame and brick outer but I still spend too much of my time sorting issues out; all day tomorrow is going to be spent sorting out some of the internal timber stud walls that are like a dogs hind leg - like you I was far too trusting of 'professionals'. On a brighter note, I have found some stars and its them that are benefitting from my cash. Keep smiling.- 33 replies

No, we decided that the two of us were unlikely to get them in accurately enough. We dug holes and then put a level concrete base in them - the frame sat on these. We squared it up and then filled the holes in. Took 3 of us a day in total.

I've just completed a shed like that for a mate. We dug holes and then poured a concrete base in each hole - all at the correct depth - frame then sat on these. Worked out well for us. Others bolt them down. We put around a m3 around each leg.

Telford is only 10 miles down the road - I'm meeting them on site tomorrow at 3pm to discuss the system. I will report back on what they say. Good to know they do a good job. Thanks Nick.

No boiler chosen yet - likely to be a well known make - will look at some specs tomorrow. I'm not too sure if the plumber is 'into' the highly insulated house scene. It will be interesting to see what Telford say tomorrow - I dont think they do TS. I will contact Chelmer heating as well - they do seem to cater for both TS & UVC. I'm local to Telford so that would be convenient. For ages I thought TS was the answer but in recent times I've seen a lot of UVC going in.

I have been leaning towards a uvc with possibly a 100l buffer tank for the heating. The rads would need a separate pump then I guess. Too many options really - every other system has been on a combi.

Hi @Nickfromwales, what if you've got mains gas? Chap from Telford cylinders is visiting tomorrow and Im still unsure whether a uvc or ts is best for us? Rads upstairs + ufh downstairs. Heating demand is low ~ 5kw. Plumber likes uvc. Cheers.

5mm is quite wide - more of a floor tile spacing, I normally do 3 or 4mm for wall tiles. -

If the boards are ply with vcl on top of them and then plasterboard - why not tape the joints in the ply & save the hassle of vcl? I think I would be happy to rely on the panels without the vcl. -
I mixed 10 bulk bags worth of concrete last weekend - easier when I was 20 years younger. Steady pace seems to be the key now.

Not possible to tape the joints? Looking good. -
Ian - its been coming - you can see that in your posts since the wind incident. Since our brickie finished its just me on site and with a full time job progress is slow - dont underestimate the task. There are a few of us around here self building and we've been helping each other accasionally - pushes the job ahead and is nice to have company / banter on site - is that an option for you?

Interested in how easy the auger was to use - phase 1 of fencing has finished but Q a lot of smaller posts to go in eventually. Thanks both.

What size posts were you putting in? How easy was it to keep plumb?
