  1. How much does that lantern weigh ..?? That will affect the loading and the span as will if there is access to the roof.
  2. Fascia needs to be around 18-20mm thick overall so.... Either use 11mm OSB with a 9mm capping, or use an 18mm uPVC fascia. How the fascia is done depends on the flat roof finish though - what are you using ..?
  3. Just checked and it was just shy of £4 per tin delivered EXPANDING FOAM FILLER GUN GRADE (BOX OF 12) 750ML SOUDAL https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FKED1ZM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_P-gfzbTB6NNEQ
  4. I'm using the Soudal foam and it's fantastic stuff. I did buy a decent Fischer gun and have cleaner too - gone through a couple of tins of foam so far and no issues with either gun or valve on the tin if you spray well with cleaner.
  5. Translation please ..!!! Do you mean make any stub off the main run as short as possible ..?
  6. As it says really. What are the rules on daisy chaining and hub / spur routing of 1-wire sensors ..? I want to measure the temperature in the cellar and under the slab from the cellar along with the humidity so ideally want a minimum of 3 sensors in the cellar area. I've only got a single 22mm "duct" going in there and I'm using that for a D.C. Supply to the LED lights and potentially a small circulation fan. Is is it possible just to run a single Cat5/6 down there and just hang all of the sensors off the 3 wires and the rPI end resistor (this is a Python bitbang setup for monitoring) or would I be better creating a mesh of resistors / sensors and run each on its own Cat5/6 core with a common earth..?
  7. You can get clone capsules now as Nespresso released the market hold a while back. Still close on 20p per capsule but genuine ones are over 30p now so a good saving. Its worth noting that Nespresso offer a free recycling scheme for their capsules as they are aluminum - you put a post paid bag in the post. Edited to add if you have a Lidl near you then their capsules came out top in a comparison test at £1.79 for 10.
  8. So what happens if your drive has gates...??? Not unusual these days so I would think the MOPs are having to rethink the meter reading argument (unless they go smart meter only if they can't access...?)
  9. Not much shy of £10k for the big one either !! Coffee Italia have some really good prices on machines too....
  10. Saw a lovely Elektra this week - bit of coffee machine porn anyone ..?? Elektra Coffee Machines
  11. So what's the issue ...??? If they are contracted to pump 65 cubic metres as a single pour into the foundations then that is their issue ..?
  12. They are GRP - get a rattle can of the paint the colour you want it and spray it.
  13. I would properly model your design using the spreadsheet that @JSHarris put together and play with the numbers. We have more roof than wall, and going from 0.15 to 0.18 in the walls made the square root of naff all difference. What made the big difference was the airtight layer and reducing the number of ACH. It was a huge difference and is where I'm concentrating the detailing on
  14. I've no idea what he's planning on doing other than take out the Leylandi and not knowing where in the UK you are would also affect price. If he's talking about dropping, chipping and stump grinding those Leylandi and doing some reasonable canopy work on the others then it's 2-3 days and that's not a bad price.
  15. Are the beech and birch in your garden or are you having work done for your neighbours too ..??! That's a bit over and above the course of neighbourly love .... you need to make your tree surgeon aware that you are paying as his insurance may have something to say about it in terms of liability. Those Leylandii have to go .... and there are two rules about asking councils for advice on trees : 1. Unless in a conservation area or a known TPO area, do not ask the council for advice on any tree matter. 2. If in doubt, refer to rule 1. Its most likely that your local council tree protection fashionista is shared between two or three councils and the county if you are lucky. They are already overstretched with the trees they have to inspect (parks, church yards, cemeteries etc) and your trees will be a hassle. Imposing an emergency TPO can be done from the comfort of a council office and takes minutes - they then have 8 weeks to make it permanent and if you're lucky they may even drive past the plot ... And given that these aren't even in your garden, getting the council putting TPOs on someone else's trees is a sure fire way to lose friendly neighbours ..!! You don't have to show trees on a planning application if they aren't in your garden anyway unless they have existing TPOs on them and are likely to be disturbed by the building works. Time to go and see old Mrs Smith with a bottle of Bristol Cream and a nice Victoria sandwich ...
  16. 200mm cavity brings some serious increase in tie costs - my 275mm are £47 a box vs £26 for standard, and 325mm ones are nearly £80 a box ..! Try one of the ones blowing a graphite EPS bead as they are not too bad - think mine was £11sqm but would need to check for 150mm
  17. It's only a posh looking HepV0 trap which you can get for £20 or less if you look on eBay.
  18. Get an arborist to give you their opinion on the state of the trees and then suggest that they are taken down at your cost is probably the only way to sort. Wont be cheap but tbh unless one falls onto her house it sounds like no-one will do anything. If the others are in the gardens next door there is nothing you can do but make suggestions ...
  19. I use MKM but TP are the same. Fillmaster is not what you want - it's a commercial product for filling bridges and embankments ..! depending on where you are in the U.K. you can get it for £10 for 100mm and you just build up the layers - quick and easy
  20. Sounds a bit steep to me as they don't have to deal with another party or solicitor. What's the cost breakdown ..?
  21. Right so that's a nice looking copper beech that needs a bit of a trim (lower two branches would lift the canopy nicely) , a youngish Silver Birch than has some growing to do .... ... and the tallest Leylandi hedge I've seen ..!! Whoever pruned those should be ashamed - you cannot prune them like that ..! They are a hedge though as the proximity of the trunks shows they were planted as such. What would worry me is the root mass - it will be a large intertwined mess that is probably only 12-18" deep but they have over balanced the trees. What is also concerning is they appear to have removed one side which will over balance the whole lot towards the other house - the group of 4 on the right is leaning and one is showing signs of failure now. Depending on your location, that is probably £7-900 of work to remove those but they need doing before they fall - they can't even be topped as there is noting left below 20ft....
  22. Errrr... £10.65 from my BM..! EPS is roughly 40% of the cost of PUR, and you need around 2.5 times as much. The benefit on PUR is less dig out, EPS makes for a better fully insulated slab
  23. My 150s came direct from Catnic so on a 4 day turnaround - most BMs have 100s on same day in stock which isn't a huge delay but you need to bear it in mind. I used Condell online and they beat everyone's prices
  24. I have TP, Wickes and MKM as suppliers. TP are only getting bricks out of it as they are just atrocious at customer service and their drivers are a joke ... Wickes I have a discount card for and I get 10% off gift cards so the 20% discount make them pretty reasonable. MKM get 95% of the business - branch director looks after self builds and all the pricing is great - delivery drivers are superb too, stuff goes exactly where we ask for it to go and nothing is a problem. Jewsons.......... well they just made me laugh ! £1.65 for a standard aircrete block ....
  25. It allows the heat to spread across a wider area than just the pipe. Works like a mini radiator.
