  1. Also get yourself some decent gloves, they grip the wood and protect your hands, timber can be rough on the hands after a while (ask me how I know ?).
  2. Yup, I used dry blocks at the corners to mount mine.?
  3. I find with BCO,s that if they see you doing a good job they are not to worried, knowing you want it done properly (or I may have been lucky as a builder). I only had a problem with one BCO that wanted something done not in the regs, I politely/kindly proved him wrong (by confirming it wrong with another BCO) and he was fine afterwards.
  4. Good for you, I would not be without mine nowadays, (very similar to yours) take time setting it up meticulously (this will take a bit of time) and it will be well worth it, if only the feel good factor of doing it yourself. Enjoy ?
  5. No not me, all my pipes are in a warm loft so not an issue, although I did get a little condensation on the incoming flexible pipe and just wrapped it in rockwall which has done the trick.
  6. Yup, our large “sun space “ (I don’t like the word conservatory) has been hit by various birds.
  7. Hope you guys had a good time away (while the rest of us plough on)?
  8. Problems with fine mesh can be soot particles binding to it and blocking the flue, BIL had exactly that (but he was burning crap wood tho).
  9. I used all my plasterboard offcuts by putting them inside the stud walls as they help soundproofing. I did ring the council about plastic waste, I told them new house and new furniture ?all wrapped in plastic, they told me the re cycling centre would not take it and suggested I bagged it every two weeks and let the dustmen take it, go figure.
  10. I used to have a gaggia machine years ago that cost £500 in a sale ?, it was good and lasted about 5 years, I currently use a Delonghi summut or other bought in a charity shop fir £25 and can’t fault it ?
  11. BUT, if the mixer is that far away from the shower head how long does it take fir a change in temp of the water take?
  12. Making mistakes is a human trait, as long as we learn from them (better to learn from other people’s mistakes tho !).
  13. I once cut a tree down that fell the wrong way, roped and loads of tension, the tree was on the edge of a wood and I did not realise all the branches and greenery were on the outside, guess which side weighed more? Rope snapped and the tree landed on my car, horsebox, etc. Luckily there was so much soft greenery it did virtually no damage, lucky eh!.
  14. When I considered building a straw bale house some years ago I planned to build a scaffold around and over it before starting, corrugated roof and tarp sides, plan was to keep wet out and be able to work during rain. I went to a scaffold merchant in Bristol and he quoted me about £7k fir the scaffold and told me as long as I kept it clean and oiled it would keep most of its price and he would probably buy it back after a couple of years.
  15. Don’t get me started on EU directives ?.
  16. Why on earth was it against EU regs?, planes I can understand.
  17. I did nearly comment on whether you were safe working on your own, but I would have done just the same ?
  18. I am disappointed with the sound transference between floors in my new build, 100mm sound insulation between the I beams is not enough in my opinion, I wish I had doubled the plasterboard or soundblock plasterboard or rails to hang the plasterboard on. There are no air gaps through the flooring upstairs so it is ceiling/insulation that is lacking.
  19. What’s the roofing materials?, could be to stop condensation dripping inside. I used roofing felt under my metal roofing on my garage to stop any condensation dripping on my tools etc.
  20. What I omitted in my drawing was a vertical DPC on the brickwork, (belt and braces) the rock wall batts don’t wick water anyway, also spray insulation against the back of the plasterboard.
  21. We backfilled with extruded polystyrene insulation to avoid a cold bridge (see https://www.greenbuildingstore.co.uk/golcar-passivhaus-ground-floor-foundations/.
  22. I fitted my own windows but in a slightly unusual way, fixed to outside brick skin, see Window strap positioning, inside or out?
  23. I bought my 4Kw unit on Ebay fir £850 delivered and installed it myself. I think @ProDave has one with a good command unit?
  24. As per @JSHarris above, the only thing I have heard about is the control units, ours (a carrier badged kingspan) have a complicated command unit and @ProDave seams to have a more controllable command unit, I may be wrong but will let them respond. Perhaps get one with a command init that does what you want it to do.
