  1. But is your porch within the thermal envelope?, mine is not (but the frame is foamed in) and it very cold.
  2. Is it UPVC ? Hollow?
  3. I had my conservatory doors open outwards fir this very reason, currently storm “Doris” or whatever has just hit and it’s pissing down .
  4. Crack on then ?
  5. And yes there are calls for it to be banned, chemicals and all that. The clay soil also needs to be improved so a mulch will smother seeds and help improve the soil (and it’s free, my neighbour is a tree surgeon, and he owes me a favour!).
  6. I was told my woodburner was no good for my new build but it’s great, don’t light it much but yes it’s my “Porsche “ (don’t need but want). Have the option of leaving the door open to toast marshmallows or shut to see lovely flames but keep the nasties out, best of both worlds IMO.
  7. well our bills (with an ASHP) are less than our previous house with a gas boiler (which was a semi), our new build is detached in an exposed location and is twice the size.
  8. If your wall is against the boundary your soil pipe will be trespassing!, do you have guttering, facia along that wall? If so the boundary may be a little away from the wall. Might be best to speak to your neighbour (as you will need access to his land to do the work) and gauge their reaction.
  9. I did hear on the grapevine (local councillor) that my local council planners were in danger of being taken into “special measures” (whatever that means?).
  10. Ah, but I am retired, finished my build and plan on growing my own veg as part of my long term retirement plan (currently shifting 10 tons of shredded bark to smother the weeds!).
  11. you don’t have to convince me, my only revenge was going to appeal the local planners decision to refuse and winning hands down, the appeal officer even told the planners they were not abiding by their own rules,!!!! ?(and that’s the second time I have won a planning refusal).
  12. Yes concentrated bleach cleaners and “solid” objects, cotton buds etc are a no no. If it cannot rot down it don’t go down is my mantra. Mind you even mains drains are suffering big time from wipes and stuff that people flush away.
  13. I contemplated an outside veg store cooled by the cold air from my ASHP but it does not run long enough to keep it a constant temp.
  14. Glad you found the problem, with my stack I read up about it first and learnt about the whole sheet of lead as @PeterW says above, luckily my brickie had been trained old school and was going to do it anyway ?

  16. Welcome to THE self build forum, shame it’s a bit late for you!. You mentioned reclaiming VAT but you finished last year? You only have three months to claim this so what is your questions?
  17. @canalsiderenovation I am convinced it’s just teething problems, they are so different from oil or gas boilers but once up and running how you want it I think you will be pleased, I am with mine.
  18. I am another with DHW at that temp and found it more than enough.
  19. Your welcome It is normal if all lock shield valve are fully open. So I would suggest your installers “balanced “ the system (badly) when it was installed Only because it was not designed properly I just did!!! We are not clubbing together, we are just fed up of banging our heads against a brick wall with you arguing every point! If you want help then listen to people who know more than you do!.
  20. Yes, I like them as well but it looks like yours is fully extended because of the height of the pipe coming out of the wall ?
  21. @Adsibob they are “plain tiles” and available in concrete, not the cheapest tile to use as they double lap like slates but I do really like them on a steep roof ?
  22. (Tight) ?. @canalsiderenovation I don’t do a legionella cycle, no known residential case recorded and several people here also don’t do it.
  23. I have refrained from replying so far, but against my better judgment I am going to give my view........balancing radiators is a correct use of the words......hear me out.......because of the length of pipework, bends etc in a central heating system the radiators nearest the boiler or producer of heat will get hottest the quickest, the radiators furthest from the boiler will get hotter later (if at all!!,), therefore balancing the radiators is a method of restricting the flow to the nearest radiators to push hot water to the furthest (and the ones in between at varying levels). THIS IS BALANCING THE RADIATORS. Now, the amount of heat given in each room is dictated by the size of radiator and during planning/design, the amount of insulation, or not, windows, outside walls is calculated (if this is done properly ?). Now the max temp in each room (if the above is done properly)is controlled by thermostatic radiator valves, when the room is up to temp it restricts the water flow to that radiator. end of lesson........
  24. As it’s a semi, if you go with different tiles you need a waterproof solution for the join with next door!
