  1. @SteamyTea is probably right, temp last night was 0, Misty/foggy/damp. Just switched it on and monitoring ?.
  2. Nope, eyeball only. Let’s see what tomorrow brings, beddy buys time ?
  3. ah, my compressor was running but not the fan ???. Will report back when I fire it up in the morning.. thanks all for your input.
  4. It had not only defrosted but the fins were quite warm and still running on defrost, yes, never seen it defrost before. Will leave it off till the morning so I can monitor it when I get it running again. How does an ASHP go into reverse? Does it have valves to reverse the flow? I did mention a long time ago when planning mine that I wish it would just turn off before frosting rather than waste heat defrosting.
  5. Just tried to do the washing up and water not hot, wifey then says “oh forgot to tell you my bath was not very warm “ I had just had a shower and was fine couple hours ago. Found the ASHP had gone into defrost mode (first time that I have ever noticed this). We have had a few very cold days and noticed the ASHP running much more that normal. I guess that the system was in DHW mode when it went into defrost mode so “stole” hot water from the DHW tank! I have put the immersion on, switched the ASHP off and collected logs for the wood burner.
  6. I have found the B@Q website the worst I have ever come across. Dave, deliver it to me and I will pop it up to you ??????? (sorry can’t, lockdown?‍♂️)
  7. Ah, didn’t know that. I am still thinking about using E7 (note to self “get on with it!”). My UFH is within a 70mm screed rather than slab. I think my supplier charges £100 to change the meter!
  8. probably why you can’t shift that tile/slate, might need a heat gun to soften the “glue” and slide a scraper under it to release it ? (but you will need to release the ridge tiles anyway).
  9. I prefer oak for this kind of stuff but if no other “wood” in the location might look a bit odd. What about a piece of bullnose UPVC, Would not need painting an would match your white door/skirting https://www.fasciaexpert.co.uk/upvc-trims/white-window-trims/architrave-white ? edit. These are near you ?https://www.gbplastics.co.uk/Products/White_Architrave_PVC_UPVC_Skirting_Trim_torus_ogee_dmould_quadrant_fillet
  10. Just out of curiosity I whipped the lid off my ASHP and the fan motor on mine appears plastic cased with no obvious means of taking it apart ?‍♂️.
  11. @Jeremy Harris built his own programming a bit like @TerryE but stopped using it in favour of a simple room stat which he found worked better ( I know zilch about programming ?).
  12. +1 on threshold, needs to also fill that small cutout in the skirting on the right, I am sure your builder could sort something.
  13. So why don’t you go back to the installer and tell them that, their job was to design a ch system that “works” and yours does not. Have you thought of a wood burning stove to ramp up the heat? (You did mention woods near you!!!). (And chopping the wood will get you warm?).
  14. He would, but how good is good. Most builders here build to way higher standards (more insulation and airtightness) than is the norm.
  15. @dnoble can’t remember who on this forum has done that but they will give you a better answer than me (but don’t think they used a buffer tank). Anyone?
  16. I too am with Octopus and concur with @ProDave about customer service, they request a meter reading every month and within a couple of days email me a figure they will take as a direct debit payment.. I too like to pay for what I use and not let anyone keep my money!!! p.S. I will supply a code to anyone to get £50 if they transfer to them. Just pm me.
  17. I think you will find @Jeremy Harris timber frame in house SE designed everything for his build including foundations (passive slab).
  18. I had no structural engineer input on my build, there must be something weird/different/complicated for an SE input to be required.
  19. @Tom well done, reminds me when I sold my static 30 + years ago to a couple a few miles away “you will deliver it won’t you or we don’t want it!!!!”, I borrowed a tractor and towed it to their site on the road?, I got the buyer to drive in front of me to clear the road.
  20. Why not cut down an oversized door blank to the size you want.https://www.builderdepot.co.uk/44mm-plywood-fd30-fire-door-blank-2135mm-x-915mm-7ft-x-3ft
  21. If you don’t want the expense of an ASHP (but I think it’s a good idea) some here in passive houses use a Willis heater to give a small amount of heat into the slab via the UFH pipes you installed. It will give you an idea of what heat is required to get the house comfortable then you could consider an ASHP in the future if required. (I installed my own ?).
  22. Depending on budget a timber frame co could erect a water tight shell in a short time leaving you to all (most) of the rest to do yourself, don’t underestimate the plus of having a watertight shell to work in.
  23. If you want to take on major work then great, do it, unfortunately because of health problems and age my build would have taken me way too many years to complete (plus I had the money to pay a main contractor to shorten the timescale). I would say do what you can if you feel able, there are plenty of people here to give advise if required.
