What has Doris mercilessly destroyed for you?

Recommended Posts

does anyone remember that i had made a big tent on the end of my barn to lay bricks under that managed to survive the last 3 storms perfectly fine?

Well it didn't this time, Smashed a decent sized hole in the asbestos barn next to it and snapped a bunch of the legs holding it up. it was great fun trying to dismantle it when i got home from work, while Doris was still trying her hardest to piss me off, in twilight....

Oh and a bunch of my felt is now flapping in the wind, Its too dark to do anything about now and I'm leaving for the airport tomorrow at 04:00

I think its safe to say I will not be naming any of my children Doris!!

Just stood the site portaloo back on it's feet. It had been blown forwards with its weight on the door, so it would have proper spoilt someone's day if they'd been dropping the kids off at the pool at the time.  Thankfully it was dark, so I'm spared the 'fall-out' 'til the morning...

Was a pretty calm day down here, wind got up a bit this morning, so popped over to North Coast to have a look.  Nothing exceptional, Mount's Bay was very calm and the sun was out.

Not even the Boy.

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!

Looks like the excuse you've been waiting for to buy a low slung sports car...

As Dave said, all quiet up here. When we do get big storms they don't tend to do that much damage, as everything that can blow has already blown away...

Where we are is deep in a very sheltered valley, so I was a bit surprised at how strong some of the wind gusts were.  Anyone that's visited us will know how sheltered a spot it is, but yesterday morning it was a struggle to get out of the car in the drive without the door getting blown off, so it must have been blowing hard up on the exposed Plain.  The wind we had was not enough to do any damage, but did reveal a flaw in our wall-mounted mail box -  the lid bangs up and down and makes a colossal row in a strong wind.  I ended up taping the thing shut.

No damage here but a few gusts caused the 4.4m sliding doors to whistle and rattle which was fun. Was half expecting to see the caravan make an exit (still trying to shift it ) and some scrap EPS got redistributed around the garden.

However I was glad we're shot of all our old security fencing - we had Heras-like panels that I ziplocked privacy screens to and no matter how much I tried to weigh them down, they always ended up in the road (every weld is now broken so they're just scrap). The solid panels we had erected while digging the basement were even worse and made a racket or flew over when there was even a fart of wind - I had to go out one windy night with my spanner and torch to dismantle the whole lot so we could get some kip...

Here is what happened to our neighbour's fence. Half a dozen panels disturbed.

I would say the culprit was attaching 1.8m panels rigidly to 3x3 posts.

One panel was blown right across the garden.

A neighbour down the road had a plastic shed blown away.

A tree up here came down a bit like that a few years ago.  I cut off all the smaller branches that were hanging down and then people with small cars were driving underneath it, until someone with a bigger chain saw than me came along.
