What do YOU think of the roofers quality of work? Is everything neat, nice straight lines of tiles, no wonky bits? It sounds like you have some doubts that you had hoped the BI would find? Post some pictures from up on the scaffold for us to have a look?

That's it, it needs to be made at almost zero cost out of stuff I have already. But no point designing it yet, I don't want ot to be built on @Onoff timescales.

How does your garden grow?

How does your garden grow?
ProDave replied to recoveringbuilder's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
In March, when we had summer, we lawn raked the larger part of our garden. We now have patches of that where is is at least 50% earth showing between the blades of grass now the moss has gone. When summer comes back we will be re seeding that bit and lawn raking the other part of the lawn. It seems to be an ongoing job every year or 2 otherwise it would all turn to unmowable moss. Surely someone must have invented a better way to stop moss growing in a lawn or an easier way to remove it that does not strip the "lawn" bare? -
I manage to self use most of what my 3.68kW system produces just by time shifting the big appliances to the middle of the day and the immersion diverter for any left over. Heating your hot water by the immersion may not be the best use of it, but it is certainly way better than export it for no payment. I will be mighty impressed if you can self use £1000 per year from a 2.4kW system, I doubt mine even generates that much (but I do have shading issues)

When the time comes I will start a proper thread. That is not where I want it. Out of shot behind that view the burn makes a sharp 90 degree bend and at that point there is a natural rock constriction and faster flow. That is also right by the shed for easy connection. Another factor is that puts it upstream of next doors septic tank discharge so "nicer" for maintenance.

I am watching the hydro power bit for my burn. That is a project for the future. There is not much fall on my burn, If I collected water right at one end of my garden and piped it I might just get 1M head at the other end, so rather than do that i am thinking of a simple undershot water wheel. Our burn rises and falls rapidly so I am thinking to mount the water wheel on essentially a floating platform that rises and falls as the burn does.

Where to put the electricity meter
ProDave replied to MortarThePoint's topic in Consumer Units, RCDs, MCBOs
Technically you could use the concentric for L and N and run a separate earth alongside it. But it is not an approved cable in the wiring regs for use after the meter, and it is DEFINITELY not okay to run a combined neutral and earth after the meter. If you do use it, keep quiet. Assuming you have a PME earth, For the house, I would be connecting to that and adding a couple more earth rods to it, one right next to the house. Do NOT connect the caravan to the PME earth, that will need it's own completely separate local earth rod. For delivery of a heavy item try palletways, likely to be £100 or offer the shipment on https://www.shiply.com/ I used that for a couple of large items. -
As we are talking of a DIY install you will not be eligible for export payments. That needs an MCS install and when you compare the cost difference you will realise you will never recoup the MCS premium with the export payments in your lifetime. So forget that. BUT even with a DIY install you have to notify it to the DNO and perhaps that will make them look at the installed meter and if it is a spinner, replace it. And unfortunately now, any replacement will be a smart meter.

And the same applies to carpet one side (bedroom) and tiles the other side (en-suite)

Hi and welcome. If your location is where I think it is, you are about 10 miles from us.

On past recent performance it will probably only be 0% VAT on supply and fit by an accredited installer.

I tried to test a repaired inverter by stringing all my DC power supplies in series but could still not get to the inverter start voltage, so I had to take it out to the shed and connect it to a proper string of inverters.

A further out shot may help. I wonder if that arch is starting to sag?

These what you want? https://www.toolstation.com/650-isolating-radiator-tails/p57561 I suspect the bit you need normally comes with the radiator and not sold as a spare part and that might be the closest you can get. If the nut is jumping, you probably want to replace the valves as well.

New Build from scratch just finished - Phew

Well done, that is some build, more grand than my humble abode. And that's some plot as well. -

Hi and welcome, a shame you did not join 5 years ago to share the journey. I am sure you will tell us more, and we like pictures. -
A looks pretty central and already provisioned for. Hot pipes would go up to the ceiling void then as direct as possible to each point of use.

Miserable job, been there, done it, never again. It must be an old house to still have distemper so I would be looking instead about leaving it, insulating the walls and plasterboarding over if I encountered it again. We scraped most of it off dry with a scraper, a lot of it just fell off, but some was still stuck and needed soaking.

Well done for not giving up. We had lovely weather up here in March. What else can you expect if you plan to come here for the Easter holidays? the weather is bound not to play ball. But it really has been rubbish for the time of year. If you want more on site storage, the caravan dealers will almost give away an "end of life" static, you would probably get one for little more than the transport cost, even if you end up cutting it up for scrap or offering it for free when finished with it at the end. I suspect the glow plugs in the digger. When I had mine, on a cold day it would start on 2 cylinders and the others would wake up after a few seconds, but I never bothered to fix it. I avoided digging in the foul weather. A tracked machine might be better on that site, but the ground is exceptionally wet just now after all the snow in the last couple of weeks. How do you get on owning a 7.5t? I have only ever hired one, i thought to own one you needed an operators licence?

What is used to fill spaces between plasterboard?
ProDave replied to JKami84's topic in House Extensions & Conservatories
You should see the horrors on some sites where the boarders leave burst boards, and much bigger gaps than that "The tapers will sort it" -
Excess PV to drive heat pump DHW not immersion heater.
ProDave replied to Jwenty's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
What you can do, is set the timers on the heating system so the ASHP does not turn on to heat DHW until 11AM. By then solar PV production should be good, so it is likely the ASHP will be using up a good chunk of your solar generation. It's about the best you can do, other than (if you are in all day) manually turning on the ASHP when the sun comes out. That, and shifting all the big appliances to the middle of the day and the immersion diverter means I don't export much of my PV. -
I can't help directly but I believe it is called a "heat - cool thermostat"
