  1. I have a bit of a problem with architects ( last nights repeat of grand designs in Ireland being a very good case in point) . I find them to be a bit “ arty” I,e, they ( sometimes) want you to build their dream. I am in the position that I knew exactly what I wanted just needed someone to put it on CAD and make sure it passed up to date regs, I think architectural technicians can do this without the need to “dream” . Perhaps I am being unfair but this is my opinion.
  2. When I installed a stove for a customer it was much cheaper to do it through building regs and frankly the inspector was not aware of the regs, asked me if I new the regs?, have I done one before? And could I send a copy of all the forms to him. ?.
  3. I think like so many other BRegs it might depend on your inspectors interpretation, can you not ask him to clarify what is ambiguous in print? After all it’s him that signs it off!
  4. Just got round to getting these tundish as suggested above and found they let “air” out of the house out but not in. When I get the airtighness measured do they pressurise the house or de pressurise it. If it’s pressurised these will still “leak” ?
  5. Yup, I had laser surgery 30 odd years ago for distance and was told reading glasses would be needed sooner or later, didn’t mind reading glasses but not having glasses on 24/7 was a no brainier. Now I need bifocals most of the time but been told I am just within the law to drive without them, so don’t. Yes glasses on and off all day which leads to losing them or braking them. ?
  6. I must admit we are now looking at what we can do AFTER we move in, just getting the basics in place to call it home, we are even going to cook in the caravan outside so I can instal the kitchen afterwards.
  7. Luckily I have not been there but I believe this is only because I refuse to put pressure on myself, I have suffered Ill health on more than one occasion because of stress in the past. I have been waiting most of my life to do this build and it’s not worth it unless I enjoy it. My wife likes to work to definite dates but I refuse saying it will be done when it’s done! I was taught mindfulness after one particular health scare and thought then “ what a waste of time” but it’s not. I make myself sit down and just stare at the view, the clouds, the trees and take just a few moments “out”. I also do not make myself do jobs I hate, I hate painting and although I can do it I have a decorator coming tomorrow so I can get on with things I like, like woodwork which also needs doing.
  8. So sorry to hear of your misfortune but good on you for sharing and laughing about it. I confess our washing machine is in the cloakroom built to almost wet room standards because of the horrors I have heard over the years about floods.
  9. This happens so often, TV programmes have shown where people living on the edge of an estate overlooking farmland do not want more houses built to spoil their view but their house was built spoiling someone else’s view ?
  10. I did similarly, hit my little finger with a hammer when too tired, end bone in 9 pieces and swollen badly. They gave me a finger splint but I found a piece of overflow pipe was more comfortable ?. They told me to come back and see a specialist but what are they going to do?, it’s still larger than the other one but it’s stopped hurting now?
  11. I just need to park my JCB where I don’t want weeds as it leaks sooo much hydraulic fluid nothing will grow ?
  12. Well I went for block inner and brick outer with 300mm full fill cavity, airtighness should not be a problem because of wet plastering ( no dot and dab here thank you!’) I don’t like render as it so often requires painting regularly, bricks need no maintenance and gave us the cottage look we were after. Also the inner skin was concrete block not thermalite as I have seen too many problems with them.
  13. I also have had problems with weeds growing through weed fabric and was told old carpet was a better idea so I am going to try that.
  14. Congrats and well done on a great job, looks fab.
  15. I installed a large dog flap for a neighbour once, he had Alsatians, I pointed out it was large enough for a burgular but he was adamant the dogs would see them off. Later he caught someone trying to break into his garden shed and his dogs just sat there watching him!
  16. Ah, didn’t know that ?, I’ve told er indoors we are not having a cat flap into the house as it will upset the MVHR ?but have conceded to allow one into the conservatory. Wish me luck.
  17. Stupid question Barney but if you don’t have a cat why the cat flap ?
  18. My field is also full of marsh grass ( needs land drains) and dock, I might invest in a flock of goats ( in wellies) ?
  19. Not passive slab but our strip founds for house and garage produced about 100 tons of clay, we have a dead flat site but found a local farmer with an old quarry who said he would take it at £30 a trailer load (13tons). He said he would take it in the summer when the ground was dry, that was a year ago and he still can’t get on his fields because of the wettest year on record. I am praying for a drought this year to make up for it?.
  20. I also have brambles and was told constant mowing will see it off ( I hope so!)
  21. I have exactly the same, the west wall, which faces the Atlantic and all the rain it produces has got this on it. When I core drilled for the ASHP I found the rock wall on the outer inch or so was wet but it had not migrated further inward ( as was promised by the manufacturer). My builder suggests a breathable coating is put on this wall at the height of the summer when it’s all dried out. I have just gone down and put my hand in the cavity and the rock wall is dry already ?, bodes well I think.
  22. I used luxury vinyl tiles in our bathrooms because they are less cold to the touch ( in this country), I have electric towel radiators in both and electric UFH in our ensuite .
  23. I confess to not bothering with duct heaters ( although an electric one is possible due to redundant cable being available) because of the doubt on this forum that the air volume in MVHR would be enough ( I have 68mm radial duct). Also it occurs to me that people have said they tend to run their MVHR at lower volumes than stated in the regs, so even less heat transfer?
  24. I once got mice in a brand new motor caravan, luckily I caught them before they started on the upholstery and did some real damage that could be seen. I had to patch up some wiring where they ate the insulation. They got in through the vent in the floor under the Gas fridge which I covered with a metal mesh. I too am an animal lover but not the ones that attack me.
  25. I did say it was not right but asked what would you do?. I don’t blame the North Korean workers. A pittance wage to support a lavish lifestyle for the leader and nuclear weapons is oh so wrong but how to deal with it is a problem for the wider world.
