  1. The link works now. Anyone know whether its any good?
  2. How would a very nice boy like you know?
  3. You'll know that the one thing that characterises our build is interruption and delay. Getting fed up it with now to be honest. Main roof is nearly done - just the flat roof to do and we'll be water tight. I seem to have timed the flat roof build perfectly to coincide with the onset of the bad weather. The end in mind is to make sure that rain doesn't stop play while building the flat roof. So, a design for a plastic canopy is bubbling away in what , for me, currently passes for a brain. The design: a series of five 25mm plastic water pipe hoops attached to the wall held in place by a temporary wall plate at the top a vertical scaffold tube at the bottom (the poly pipe simply slots in to it - secured by a screw), and two wooden purlins to keep the hoops apart and steady - about a third from the top and bottom Its how to keep a grip on the plastic at the top and bottom that's exercising my little grey cells. Until I saw this.... Wiggle wire Further digging came up with Poly Track, Agra Lock and others. Any of you farmers out there who have experience with Wiggle Wire? Any gottchas ?
  4. Thanks Declan. Air tightness tape : in or outside? Product trade names?
  5. We have an issue with how our windows are to be sealed into the window frame. Today I got round to reading the instructions on how to seal our windows in and was surprised to read the following; The instructions (highlighted in yellow translated above) show that Compriband should have been used between the window and the frame. It wasn't. The installers simply foamed them in, like this; The point made by the installer is that Durisol isn't air-tight enough - and importantly smooth enough - to make a proper seal between the window and the wall with Compriband. The fact that this should have been picked up before is no longer relevant. Shit happens. I have asked for help from Durisol: none forthcoming yet.... This can't be the first time someone has faced this issue. Which products would be likely to compensate for the leakiness and roughness of the Durisol / window interface? I don't want to get to to air-tightness testing to find that the windows are allowing a gale through..... I will have paid for them by then - and nobody will be interested in helping solve the issue at that stage. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- [PS . Craig from Ecowin the Gaulhofer agent) has just rung to say that if there is any air leakage round the windows, then Ecowin would would indeed be responsible, he also suggests that I get a company rep to observe the air tests. That would mean they'd sort any problems out on the spot. Can't say fairer than that now can he? ]
  6. Yes. Your neighbours are an obvious starting point. What's (was) their experience: what lessons did they learn? What were their footings like?
  7. Morning! Welcome. You realise we charge for advice don't you... ?. (My God, we'd be rich if we did that.....) Adding a storey: can't recall any posts or threads about that - should be interesting. Plans? Images? Help us get our heads round it......
  8. Reduce your exposure to risk. Find out. Doing that will, at the very least improve the accuracy of your quote
  9. Moral Governance in crisis eh? Whose morals? ' ... This is not a personal question. It is a highly political, scientific and moral issue about the future of Cochrane. As most people know, much of my work is not very favourable to the financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry....' For me the root problem is simple. Ethical relativism.
  10. Of course. I'll give you my phone number and we can talk it through. Ian
  11. My software was extremely expensive. She insisted on diamonds. Issues real-time instructions. Needs chocolate too.
  12. Tick - infested Salop eh? I used to be fit enough to run the Long Mynd race in the 70s: did it a few times. Yes, I got a few ticks too. I blame the Stiperstones - maybe unfairly. Only a year's wait! Congratulations on speedy progress. Ian
  13. I don't believe we have met. Welcome! My build is Durisol. My SE is Hilliard Tanner, based here. One sentence in Hilliard's proposal for our foundation plan saved us more than double his fee. I can recommend his work on the basis of three years working with him. Durisol will also recommend you an SE : his expertise is in how to deal with Durisol issues - how to manage large lintels, corner details and so on. He worked for us FoC for some simple bits of work. Finally the local Durisol Rep will also know who to ask. PM me for details if you like.
  14. Relax. You'll know soon enough. Be yourself. Home ownership does not automatically confer a valid opinion on surrounding plots. Application for Planning Permission is one of the best ways I know of finding out what people really think. @JSHarris tells a simple story of how he did everything a reasonable person could do - consulted, listened, adapted ideas, spent a significant sum. But didn't know that one of his neighbours was just trying it on. How did he find our? Years later the neighbour told him. ( I cant remember where: probably here on BH, but maybe his own site ) My story is simpler. They hated the design, they objected (sometimes vociferously and very rudely), they wanted a duplicate of the other houses all round. Here's the whole story. Follow guidelines, consult professionals, and just do it.
  15. I've done that, but bought a meat-head wreck Landy, and a trailer. What do I need the roll - cage for? Nothing really. But I have found it helps me pull my old bones into the cab, and to strap timber to the roof when I go to the BM. I also put a front tow hook so I can manoeuver the trailer into tricky nooks and crannies. Best thing I ever did. I have had five cash offers for it in four years.
  16. @nod will be along soon. He'll know.
  17. Now you've gone a blown it haven't you ! So it can't be subtle anymore. And anyway, Debbie would never do that would she? Would she?
  18. It might make a tiny bit of difference.... have you tried experimenting? It think their perception might well have it's roots in the experience of turning a hot water tap on to increase the flow rate and so 'hasten' the onset of hot water.
  19. A tiny amount of water spreads itself thinly. If there is a pool of water that consistently forms in the same place ( a low spot) , the normal precipitation / evaporation cycle will , over time leave a ring caused by small bits of dust trapped in the surface film. Our flat roof has three small 'pools' and has had for the last five or more years. I have no concerns whatever about them. None. And it has been done to a much much lower standard than yours. Its Friday. Not long until a pint of foaming liquid a good chat and a family meal, and time to watch a trashy film - take the mickey.... eh?
  20. Sweating detail and worrying about it is completely normal. There is not one self builder here who has not lost many nights sleep over detai. Not one. (Shit I spellt detail wrong. Arggghhh) Except @Onoff
  21. Rollo couldn't. I'm not kidding
  22. We've kept it simple. No FIT. Part P electrician installation (used to be a solar fitter but stopped when the market was kicked out from under his feet.) Focus on self-consumption. If others benefit because we aren't consuming, tough (on us). Watch the battery storage system price like a hawk - aim to store our PV production as soon as we can afford it. ian
  23. The killer for us was the rental fees. A related sideshow was the way the builders simply moved it as and when they wanted making the site insurance invalid and the scaffolder's insurance invalid. The builder's response to me pointing that out was - " Wodja meen - nuffin rong wiv at, we'm insured. " £280 was hemorrhaging every month while we coped with the collapse of the wall and the knock-on delays. In the end the business case for KwikStage was compelling.
  24. Welcome to the club where even the clued-up find themselves clueless at some stage or other. There are some who haven't got the emotional intelligence to admit it...... The direct answer to your question is - somewhere . In the words of DH Lawrence, each flow is related to every other flow. That's to say, no matter where you choose to start, the process of starting somewhere inevitably makes you look at its precedents. In terms that I suspect you might feel comfortable, where you can, choose a code library, or content development network if possible. But do write some psuedo-code first, and then run it past us. I chose to think of things from under the ground upwards. I started thinking about soft and smelly stuff and worked upwards from there. It worked for us. Good luck, and welcome!
