Spacing stair rods evenly
ToughButterCup replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Perhaps I should have titled the thread Spacing Things Evenly. My louvres are vertical- more like stair rods. As I see it the problem of spacing is about calculating the space available AFTER adding the widths of everything that you are going to put in the space -
Spacing stair rods evenly
ToughButterCup replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Thanks Dave. I'd like to finish a run of louvres with a louvre, not a space. Using your logic, then the total gap (for calculation purposes) reduces by the width of 2 louvres, I think....? Meantime I found this. He makes the same point as you about top and bottom. -
Site Laser Level Detector & Measurer
ToughButterCup replied to iSelfBuild's topic in Tools & Equipment
Bosch professional. Mine failed -faultered- outside in bright sunlight. That's it's only weakness . As soon as a cloud shaded the sun it was fine. -
Anyone know how to get the SPACES between the rods exactly the same all the way along the run?

I had exactly the same problem right when C-19 struck. That meant about a month digging 35 cubic meters by hand. At the time I cursed a bit. I've already forgotten the irritation, but I do know - now - exactly what's involved in accurate digging to a fairly precise fall. In brief Keep checking for level - over-digging by hand is soooo annoying Make sure the width is right, pipe width plus space for one foot either side of the pipe- too wide is as bad as too narrow Plan for spoil - topsoil one side, clay / whatever else 'other side. Backfills easier that way. Make a set of trench boards to prevent, where necessary, collapse- scaffold Jacks to brace between boards on either side. Plan how to drain the trench : thunderstorms. Buy a clay spade. Brilliant bit of kit. Two people digging (machine or hand) speeds the process significantly. Debbie helping more than doubled the rate of progress Plan for where the backfill 10mm gravel is dumped. It's a much bigger task than I thought. A laser level really helps.

I do occasionally know what I am doing

Morning. Welcome. That's what we need, level headed pragmatism. And there was I wanting to go on holiday to Broadchurch as soon as C-19 abates.... -

Our tiler says that now, he only ever uses a levelling system. For one thing it speeds up his workflow. -

a blanking plate is ... I have TLCs catalogue open in front of me and cant find one - even in the Bits and Bobs section Online though , is this what you mean? Presumably if I decide to do that, then it'll need to be sealed with something like CT1 maybe? -

... intended for ... ? A small Euromodule light. But I was persuaded to change the layout of the shower: and now the lighting point is directly in line with the shower flow .... ? I did ask the tiler no to cut a hole there. -
You are very welcome @timsk. I can see that, from your skills list) I will be asking you for advice in a couple of months time. I had a happy few years in the Cotswolds, and so visited many of the Roman villas that have been found there. Couple that with a visit or two to Herculanum (?spelling) and that got me very interested in how mosaics can exist at all sorts of levels. So now we have two experts on whom we can call .... excellent. Ian PS we are asking Matron to up @Russell griffiths medication .....?

I blame myself. Even though I had told the tiler not to cut this hole ....... How on earth do I fill it up / camouflage it elegantly?
-
You doing your own tiling then sunshine? I went round that desert endlessly. Overthinking everything. Cometh C-19, cometh trades from far and wide. Among them a tiler. He saw what we had done , took out a rule sucked his teeth a bit and said Wotcha worrying for? This is flatter than the average pancake. In which case it's fine. But heights for this, that, the other says I.... God damn the man he actually said You're overthinking it.

Welcome. Getting old with as much dignity as we can muster became one of the most important themes of our house build. The more we thought about it, the more fabric-first our thinking became. Right from the wall construction to (among many others) wetroom tile choice. Our tiler still hasn't fully recovered from slipping on a wetroom floor and bruising his coccyx - his back permanently damaged. Inflict that on a 70 year old and ...

Drainpipe Saddle Branch 110, 87.5 degrees
ToughButterCup replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Waste & Sewerage
Ah, thats how you do it...... I just saw the image of a saddle branch and my thought train went from there. Just a little knowledge. Dangerous. -
I'm drawing a blank trying to find one of these for sale : Anyone know where I can source one? Might you have one down the back of your sofa maybe? If so, can I buy it from you?

Russ, just in case ... she looks at you looking at it.... Danger...Look away... Christmas is not far off. Have you seen how much a good one costs?

You are most welcome. I mis-read your last sentence as We hope to build a new house in one day. Hmmmm.

Tested my poo tank today. Connected up the air pump to the airline. Switch on - should have stood back - ? WHOOOOOSH ! Dont think digester, or discrete trickle of little bubbles. Think LOG FLUME or JACUZZI or FULL ROLLING BOIL. And what should bubble to the surface - yes you guessed it - a friggin Great Crested Bloody Newt. There it was clinging, newt-like, to a piece of insulation the size of my thumbnail. The ensuing rescue operation lasted until I dropped my Sharpie in the boiling water. Just out of reach of course. But - tell me this: didya know Sharpies float? Yeah, but my bloody glasses don't do they! All of £12 (mean like that I am) down the pan as it were. Straight out my top T shirt pocket - PLOP. Anyway - the electricity supply is via an SWA to the digester compressor compartment. The compressor only has a piddly little cable fitted. How do I connect the little compressor cable to the SWA please?

@Onoff, the weather's with you for a good while now. Crack on!
