Dire need.Garage foundations with high water table
ToughButterCup replied to SHughesNI's topic in Foundations
You just might find too much advice on BH, but you won't feel anything like as 'exposed' after submitting your plans to the Commentariat sometimes called Hive here. I have a strong feeling ( zero evidence - just a feel) you need to network: find out who's good, whose bad, who's indifferent and who to stay the Hell away from. Network, with the emphasis on work : Its hard work.- 27 replies

Artificial Grass price info and keeping it beautiful
ToughButterCup replied to Adam2's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
We let our chickens graze it - food and bits are removed almost before they hit the floor. If the chickens don't, the dogs do. Dead leaves and the like - a blower - with the wind not against it. (Getting your own back). We now have docken leaves growing through the matting, and one dandelion. -
Does SWMBO know? Or are you asking me to delete this thread? All part of the Mod service ?

Dire need.Garage foundations with high water table
ToughButterCup replied to SHughesNI's topic in Foundations
Make a plan of the area Do a soil profile Look at the local land drainage with care. Look at similar buildings in the neighbourhood: what can you learn from a simple look-see? Design the garage Give those documents to (a) builder(s) Agree a price. Sit back, relax There are a few ways of doing those things: professionals will prepare documents so that your risks are lower, or you could do all that prepapratory work yourself. It depends on your appetites for risk and cost . If you don't write it down and present it simply, it opens up all sorts of opportunity for mis-communcation- 27 replies

HSE notification Form F10 / CDM 2015 etc
ToughButterCup replied to Olly P's topic in Project & Site Management
You are a Domestic Client. My reading of that status means that no duty is imposed on you. I am not an expert (except at cocking it up) It would be informative to ask the HSE what their opinion is. -
Had more confidence in speaking out when I saw poor workmanship. The extent of local tradespeople's networks. The goss on .... Which local tradesfolk are shite and why. The levels of distress and poor personal performance caused by frequent sleeplessness The levels of blarney talked by tradespeople The need to forgive and move on - eye on the main prize. The range of meanings of unreturned phone calls The balls to kick people off site instantly when evidence and fingertip feel matched

HSE notification Form F10 / CDM 2015 etc
ToughButterCup replied to Olly P's topic in Project & Site Management
In my unqualified opinion, the quotation from the HSE site above could have been worded more clearly to read You must now enter the details for the DOMESTIC client, principal designer and principal contractor In other words, if an F10 is to be submitted at all, acting for a DOMESTIC client, the contractor should complete the form FOR the Domestic Client. And later on the same page -
Permitted Development Stable Conversions
ToughButterCup replied to Coops's topic in Planning Permission
There's a simple hierarchy.... if it ain't permitted it cant be financially viable. So work on permitted or not first. Here's a copper bottomed rock solid bloke. His writings need some work, but hey if theres money at the end of it..... http://planninglawblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/permitted-development-excluded-in-aonb.html -
Minimalist wash basin table
ToughButterCup replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Thanks folks, got the thinking juices flowing now..... like the idea of repurposing stuff: and tada .... I have some toughened glass somewhere. (but where? FGS) Could get that frosted innit? -
.... wanted at a sensible price. Lord Love a Duck, what you can get from Italy in terms of minimalist design is so expensive, they wont tell you the price. And the Nordics are almost as bad. Hard on their heels is this German (German for Gods Sake!) offering of a sheet of melamine covered board for 398 Euro - down from over a 1000. Nuff to send @Russell griffiths round the bend. I've wasted hours on Tinternet looking for what I have concluded is a company that rips off Italian and Nordic designs and sells good copies at a sensible price.

Try a pneumatic air bag under it : available from other sellers too.

Nevermind overthinking, I'm over-worrying, I hope. In a fit of what might subsequently be regarded as stupidity, I bought this All else has almost failed, so I thought I'd better read the instructions. Oh dear. Better make @Onoff and @ProDave proud, so here goes Electrician's Guide to The Building Regs , Ch 5 page 75 Reading the Tech Notes in the Instruction Manual: no mention of a metallic sheath to which I can connect the earth wire. So, I tried to contact their tech Helpline. Closed. Hence this post. Is this a some-you-win-some-you-lose case?

Sizing a boiler for UFH and greedy hot water guzzlers
ToughButterCup replied to MrsDeS's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
You'll get a technically correct answer from others on here @MrsDeS. But the results of heating stuff up depend on how people perceive those results. On how real people feel in situations relevant to them. I'm suggesting, based on a trustworthy estimate, you over-specify by a bit. How big's that 'bit' then Ian? Ask another plumber - one who hasn't specified or quoted for the system. No conflict of interest that way. -
Hanging 80kg From Wall
ToughButterCup replied to BishBashBosh2020's topic in General Structural Issues
... to store it, or use it?.... from the wall or ceiling? Mine hung from a ceiling on a normal floor joist. I ask because using a punch bag hanging on a wall means damage if it's used. I've never used a boxing bag, maybe that's different... From a joist, or noggins fastened across several joists, 80kg is fine. -
Brickies 0 Bees 2, full time score.

Find a beekeeper, she'll know, and know how. -
For those who can set out and so don't have to ask on BH, that's fine. I rather assumed that asking for advice implied a lack of confidence. And setting out is one of those bits of a build where getting it wrong is potentially disastrous. I'm not sure how to put guttering up. When (not if) I get it wrong, I take it down & do it again.....
