It's all about the details. You need to put that much insulation in the walls, floor roof, gd quality Windows and doors and have your house airtight that heating isn't really that much of an issue. It's more how you solve your dhw supply. You can go for an ashp and run it at low temp to provide the ufh which will heat your house. But you need to have done all the work before hand so it can provide enough heat without it leaking out through the floor and walls etc. How does your plumber work his???

They did when I got mine about 5 years ago. I ordered a lot, all mine for my floor and for the roof in my room in the room build. It was a full 40ft lorry. I got the number from a sales rep at the self build show and ordered it the following week.

I used mostly xtratherm in my build. At the time they had the best deal around and bought straight from them. They are based in southern Ireland.

I have an electric pole in one corner of my site but it still took a year to sort out. We visited the show about 4 times and each visit we asked more and more questions as we knew more and more about each aspect. Collect all the fliers you can and then when you have the time you can go through them and pick a few out.

Welcome Stevie. The biggest issue you will have here is finding an installer who knows what they are at in terms of installation of your ashp and then setting it up correctly. There is a self build show in Belfast next weekend at the Titanic building and that will be your best bet to visit all the many different companies who do this work. You can also look at all the other different materials that you will need. Most of the lenders offering finance will be there as well. As far as solar panels go the grants have finished so you just do a self install where you try to use all the electric you generate. Your only really generating from April to October then it justs drops of a cliff. Once you are ready to start you need to get on the ball with powerni, ni water, bt etc as they are slow to deal with.

You could mix some copper sulphate up and using a pump sprayer cover the roof and let it work away for as week then use a garden hose and rinse it of. Once you have the moss removed then you will be able to see what exactly needs done without you needing to get into the roof. Don't power hose the tiles, it will cause more damage to the surface of the tile. The patch job along your flashing will need to be removed and done right. How are you at heights??? Can you hire a roof ladder if your not the best???

A few pics would help.

They have to have updated the panel fixings by now for their latest versions. It's like they spent thousands and thousands of £££ to design the inner workings of the unit and then 2p on how you attach it all together. I have never went as far as checking the fan in mind but maybe for a bit of peace of mind I might do it when it's next due the filter change in April.

What is making your quote very competitive, just the £ value at the bottom or the overall u value you will end up with compared with your other quotes.
-
Most companies will give a long warranty for things like the seal going but not for glass cracking or shattering.
-
It's so strange because if you have had an architect certified build then as it's their own insurance on the line they will actually inspect the build during the process.
-
Check what will be the u value of all the different aspects, floors walls and roof and also Windows and doors of these are included. Then compare and rank them in order. Are any giving you a air test value that they will aim to achieve?? Go through each and every quote and see if there are certain things one company is including as standard and others are leaving out but can include for extra costs. It will take a few hours but when you get finished then you will have a better idea of where you stand with each quote and what exactly you will get and more importantly what you won't get and be expected to do yourself.

How do i determine the height of new walls?
Declan52 replied to carlosdeanos's topic in Brick & Block
It will depend on what way you'll finish the outside. Are you going for facia boards for example. -
Only need to be 450mm long. No point in wasting it.

Concrete blocks will crush. You need to use of cuts of timber like you would see under scaffold legs. Bits of plank or joists

Building a retaining wall for a driveway
Declan52 replied to Ivan_England's topic in Bricklaying, Blockwork & Mortar
I think the larger block holding the driveway back was £25 sqm and the smaller £15sqm. But I got a very good deal as I also bought a lot of their paving blocks as well at the same time and I used the same company for my thermal blocks so had bought maybe £10k worth of materials from them. And that was 5 years ago and they are a local company to me. -

I have 2 different size blocks in my walls. The largest can go to 1.2m without any membrane but can go higher if needed using one. The smaller blocks can go to 0.9m and that's it. -

I used these blocks for mine. They require no concrete base, a 200mm depth of well compacted hardcore is all mine sits on. They are as DIY as a retaining wall comes. https://ag.uk.com/retaining-wall/anchor-diamond/ -

What do you want it to look like?? Brick, plastered, stone or other. This choice will push you down a particular method and rule out others. -

What's the boundary on the left hand side made from?? -
Mint grows like a weed. You need to contain the offshoots as it will spread like wildfire and choke everything else. Sage is pretty robust. Rosemary is a slow grower. Dill grows very fast and gets big so needs cut often. Parsley needs plenty of room as well. Lemon thyme is nice and very hardy. Spring onions, radish and most lettuce take little work. Dill and lemon balm also attract good bugs that will eat the ones that take a shine to your veg.

Powerline WiFi options?
Declan52 replied to Jeremy Harris's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
I used another router to extend my network to the side of the house it was poor. I connected it via an ethernet cable to my network so it's not using more WiFi. It's a pretty easy thing to do. Mine was an old sky router and it had the option to use it as an access point in the settings. Just had to change the IP address to one in the range of the main router and it works away. -
You can also use an old pallet. https://www.cbc.ca/life/video/diy-wood-pallet-herb-garden-1.4208532

What accidents have you had while DIY'ing?!!
Declan52 replied to mike2016's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
It's a bit weird the first time but there is no feeling until you get through the nail and then it's only relief you feel when the throbbing stops. One of the many perks of working on a building site is you get a lot of these type of injuries. Easily must have had to do this 15 times over the years. -
The 25mm battens will allow you to lay ufh pipes and then cover it in a biscuit mix.
