  1. You can just put a vent in the garden. If it's your own system then no problem at all. They can go ground level, well just above so you get an invert or a cowl on it.

  3. It's a very handy setup to keep for good. I went from air to gas and I'm not really that impressed. My trusty Ace & K framing nailer was like an Uzi 9mm. It would NEVER miss a shot and boy could it send some nails home in a hurry. Would fire as quick as you could move your trigger finger. When I finally do the bloody man-shed it'll be done with a new compressor and a nice new set of air nailers. I'll keep the gas nailers as I'll struggle to get good money back probably, but the air stuff is so cheap I'll not have to worry about creating funds. As long as you are on a series run of houses that all have SVP's then you can petition your BCO on the 1 in 10, or 1 in 5 as some state it, clause where your neighbours either side are providing the network sewers with vents to atmosphere. SVP's don't form a function for the dwelling, they are required to vent the gasses that build up in the sewers . AAV's should suffice, but your BCO may be a picky tw4t and dig their heels in. One per property max though so no need for multiples. Vents can go out the walls horizontally so that's up to you. The cowls are to stop driving rain getting into the ductwork so best to check what's available before committing to either option. Why not go for trickle vents and PIV ?

  11. Even with condensing some heat still gets through. How fitting a smart controller to your boiler will make you house retain more heat is beyond me. Modern controls which have been good enough up until now are accurate enough. I don't ever need to turn mine on or off or monitor its performance whilst jet-skiing in the Sahara. And anyone here ever try getting an OEM Weather Comp to ACTUALLY bloody work ? I gave up on Vaillant, after they talked me through it on the phone and told me where to locate the external unit. Then the customer had Vaillant come out and he said "what idiot told you to put the external unit there, it'll never work?!?" to which he replied "you idiots, that's who!"

  13. The guy I watched climb the pole opposite my house took around 45 mins to carry out a 5 min job. I think the only thing he hadn't put on was fire retardant spray ! They are taller in Wales so we have somewhere to hide when the guy comes around to check our TV license
  14. It would probably have to be a pumped circuit with the waste water heat being gleaned to a heat exchanger. You couldn't have the cells wide open to free flowing water as they're then lose whatever heat they collected as quick as they gained it. You'd effectively be adding a chimney to it, hence why WWHR units only allow you to immediately consume what they produce. Waste heat from combustion would be a winner, reclaiming flue gas heat etc. Boiler Plus ( +? ) is coming to England iirc where some sort of energy efficiency must feature in every install. Flue gas heat recovery being one, Internet / wifi smart controls being another. Haven't read up too much on it yet though.
  15. Guy was ( is ) a legend. I would pay good money to have him tear one of those OpenReach guys a new arsehole as they spend 15-20 mins putting on PPE and a full body harness to climb a fackin telegraph pole.

  17. A TS will do a multitude of things, specified by its design. These are almost always a bespoke procurement but not very costly considering. A large TS will do space heating and DHW without issue, so no problems there. Just order it with the appropriate tappings and you'll be sorted. The cylinder stat tells the boiler to fire, so just set the boiler flow temperature on the boiler control panel to the temp you want, which will be the same every time it fires. That way you can dictate the flow and return temps to maximise on condensing efficiency. They are in comparison but the equation requires a bit more appreciation of what the SA unit brings on returns and running costs. Annual G3 inspection will set you back around £120 a year. 10 years is £1200. Plus you'll have the inconvenience and time wasted meeting an engineer, making the appointments etc, and the discharge pipe runs. Plus, add in the extra energy losses which you pay for. An UVC or TS will cost you its original cost every 10 years. A SA will earn its keep. Also, size vs energy density a SA is around 1/3 - 1/4 of the physical size of its cylindrical counterparts. A big TS is cumbersome, a SA can fit where a slimline dishwasher would. Im not blowing smoke up the arse of SA, but its hard not to promote them when they have such a good place in the market. I remain 100% impartial in my comments on BH, and these are my personal opinions. If capital outlay is a factor then simply choose a cylinder as that's the cheapest route to a system that will suit your immediate requirements
  18. Yup. Spoke to andy about that too. They're a good product for recovering heat that would otherwise be lost, and the refill flow rate for those types of cells are better than any combi or inline electric heater could ever dream of being. The limit with the SA units seems to be imagination.
  19. One will be a mid position and the other a diverter. You'll need the diverter, eg heating OR hot water, with the former being able to sit in the mid position and give both simultaneously . An ASHP can't do both together as each has a specific flow temp.

  22. Like gas, they have to train, qualify and maintain their status. A regular spark could fit a 'non MCS' PV array, just like any tom, dick or harry could. Would they be good at it ? ?
