  1. My issue is a PV system with battery storage that is set to NEVER export and only supply the house needs should be allowed in any quantity without restriction. As batteries come down in price this is becoming much more normal. WHY do such systems still have to jump through all the hoops and be subject to power restrictions? THIS is where the DNO's need to modernise their thinking. I am starting to look at this aspect as I might one day want to add such a system and would prefer to do it legally.

  2. Close them at the outer end but also protect the cables there as they can be chewed through. I have, in the past used stainless steel wool, oven cleaner type stuff, forced down to simply close the gap, this can be pulled out if needs be, does not rust, allows a little air flow - if you want to seal it to air you have to work harder and cannot be chewed through by your average rodent / vermin!

  3. So the bloke did a days work, your mate weren't happy and refused to pay him. You said the work was OK. Where does your mate get off thinking he can treat people like that and there be no comeback. I'd have done exactly the same as the bricky.

  5. How about, something like 100mm Rockwool between the joists. Its main purpose is to prevent the reverberating drum effect but can double up to heat insulate in your case. Structural flooring on acoustic strips on the joists. Membrane, Pipes and screed. If you want to do more acoustic improvements consider resilient bars underneath and greater mass of plasterboards (soundbloc or thicker boards or double board). An essential part of soundproofing is closing any air pathways so downlighters etc are best avoided.

  6. The French house consumption meters are way more sensitive than UK meters to the burst diversion technique, so it does not work with them as the toing and froing of electricity within the bucket is seen by French meters as consumption, in the UK it is not. For the MK2 PVrouter there is new software released for French users which gets round the problem. These are the changes, I will be trying it out as I have a secondary import/export meter installed to check for any export leakage and that is showing a 15W or 0.015kwh export when the MK2 PVrouter is diverting excess to the immersion element. If after installing this program it still shows 15W export then I have some other tricks to try which will be looking at the calibration of the CT clamp. Release notes for the change November 2019: updated to Mk2_fasterControl_1 with these changes: * - Half way through each mains cycle, a prediction is made of the likely energy level at the * end of the cycle. That predicted value allows the triac to be switched at the +ve going * zero-crossing point rather than waiting for a further 10 ms. These changes allow for * faster switching of the load. * - The range of the energy bucket has been reduced to one tenth of its former value. This * allows the unit's operation to commence more rapidly whenever surplus power is available.

  10. I was taught that must indicates a legal requirement that is enforceable, can indicates a guideline, and will is ambiguous, and usually deliberately so to lead people to think that something is a requirement when it is not...

  11. Well, it is published as a "Guide" after all 😃 I went nuts trying to tie down the legal requirements for self-installers but a parallel search for cases where people were being prosecuted for not abiding by the "difficult to determine" regulations came up empty handed too - so draw your own conclusions. Part P is obviously a "must" for any new circuit though.

  12. And immediately following that para it refers the reader to the MCS web site, yet theres absolutely no requirement to use MCS installers which the para infers is a requirement! (I found the text on page 25 not 33) That guide has other mcs issues, it states MCS is the only approved scheme for getting SEG payments, but since Nov 2019 Flexi Orb has existed as an alternative. https://www.solarpanelprices.co.uk/articles/solar-panels/flexi-orb/

  13. Yes and available on both 😉 Edit: timescales are roughly 8 to 12 weeks, order dependant.

  17. Never tipped a delivery driver, but probably should do something to recognise our local Amazon and Hermes drivers. For all the shit we read in the news, there's about 3-4 regulars, and over the years they've always gone out of their way to leave the packages, even when it involves them entering a building site, clambering over some rubble and putting it safely in a box somewhere. It's a thankless task, with ridiculous time pressure and having to drive through difficult towns and villages trying to find houses with no number or name.

  18. I went and cherry picked components from a few places based on quality, cost or location (I.e. I could collect in person) One thing I made extra effort to source was 150mm insulated ducting, I used the ubbink foam ducts as it looked easy to engineer the routes I wanted and no need to insulate separately after installation, can dismantle them for easy cleaning now installed as well. There's some pics in this thread. https://forum.buildhub.org.uk/topic/11747-silencer-can-it-be-mounted-horizontally/page/2/?tab=comments#comment-208334 Also made a few of my own vertical terminals for about £3 each, but mostly because I couldn't get exactly what I wanted
