  1. So the snow turned up, and being a soft southern sod I needed to find something to do that didn’t involve going outside. So 72 hours later there’s not a drop of water passed through either of these roof membranes. How else do I decide which one to use, both from the same manufacturer, difference in price between the two is roughly £300. Its not just @JSHarris who’s the scientist, can I have an OLOGY.

  2. Pointing up looks better. Locksheilds are indifferent as far as the 1000's I've fitted go You can get a bit of extra audibility if facing what could be considered the wrong way, but only if the valve is dialled right back to balance a huge system. Not a problem in your system so do what looks right. Pointing down looks naff IMO.

  3. The design was just the one that the architect drew for the plot sellers in order for them to gain planning permission. A previous bigger design in a slight different place was denied permission. I imagine I'll be going to the same architect for the plan for full planning. The plot is in Suffolk and the rest of the street is mainly brick 1960's semi's although there are two other detached bungalows built upon previous garden plots.

  4. Put them where, spread sheet ????????? oh how I laughed, I’m a silly navvy not a mathematician membrane picked by trying to tear it apart, poking my finger through it, and how many free t shirts and knives the rep gave me.

  5. OK, time for the story of one of the few times in my life when I came close, very close to wetting myself with laughter. Please bear in mind that I am German. Walking down the High Street in Skipton with a mate of mine : he has a razor sharp wit And what do we see, but a group of similarly clad people (as those in the image above) , of whom two were in Nazi regalia. The following exchange took place... Hiya Lads ... what's 't crack then? Vee are Officers of Ze Tcherman Army. Aye , ah can see that : 'ow's it goin' like ? Vee Tcherman Officers are taking our job seriously, vee do not smile, vee have no sense of humour Eeee, 'appen tha's just had yer gas bill then ? I nearly died.

  6. I would say that if someone wanted to do that or similar, then use the "quadrant trunking" - though it probably meets a different need. https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/DL2D22QSW.html?source=adwords&ad_position=&ad_id=315107931576 Also arguably a bodge, but at least no one will drill holes in it. 7. Unlikely that will be allowed. The plans piece would have to be done again at cost. Are we talking more than £3-500 saving as tbh my experience of private is better than LA however others have had good LA experiences.

  8. Or the blending valve. Pump would be my first thought so just isolate it, swap it for another and see if the fault stays or follows.

  9. One for those with a business or a sole trader £50 off a £100 spend if you sign up (for free) for Amazon Business. Time limited offer. Sign up by 12th Feb and you have to use the voucher by 17th Feb. You HAVE to go to Amazon via the Head For Points link / advert (you may need to whitelist the page to see the ad), if you have extra strong anti tracking protection it may strip out the referral link, and you have to opt into emails (so that Amazon can send you the voucher) https://www.headforpoints.com/2019/02/03/amazon-business-50-offer/?fbclid=IwAR11U92811QuQjGLnGSBr3-m9FUjrBHfqiZelr62zL2SG2mbXvoE7s4UdTc Some are saying that you need to enter a VAT number but they have found a way round that - if I find out what that is I will update this thread. Edit - the FAQs say this about the VAT number: Do I need a VAT number to register? No, adding a VAT number is optional. If you do not wish to add a VAT number during registration, leave the field blank and continue with your registration. If you choose to add a VAT number, it will be printed on your invoices. You can add your VAT number any time after registration through the 'Ordering and shopping preferences' on Your Account to enable this functionality. Why do I get an error when I add a VAT number? You may get an error message if the VAT number is incomplete or not in the required format. Make sure that the VAT number you add is complete and in the following format - GB123456789 (2 digit country code followed by a 9 digit number).

  10. Yes. All that's needed is to tape the joins and make sure that the insulation foil faces don't get damaged (no harder to do than making sure any other membrane-type VCL doesn't get damaged). Care needs to be taken with detailing around the edges to make sure the VCL is contiguous, but again this isn't any more difficult that using a membrane-type VCL, or any different to using a panel-type VCL come to that.

  11. Only put about 1 minutes thought into this, could you put up steel track n stud wall and spray foam the back side against the granite fully filling to the face of the studs. Stud wall 70 mm, gap behind for wobbly granite 10-15 mm total 100mm with plasterboard so 88mm of closed cell spray foam. I really can’t think of anything you can use that will go that thin do you have to comply with building regs as I don’t know what the minimum would be for that.

  12. yes the lime in the cement will not be good for growth ,but that will change over time as it washs out I made my lawn edging exactly the same to save having to use strimmer --but cut back the cement when still not fully set closer to brick edging. so i had full brick depth but i did make soil level at lot higher ,basically 10mm below brick level and did not have all that gravel rubble ,then turfed it - If seeding i would have filled soil right up to brick level -seeded and rolled -- the gravel +rubble will drain very quick in dry times compared to rest of area i can see in picture the fact that the level of the turf seems to be below the brick level is amplifying the lack of soil for roots maybe top fill the grass with fine compost and raise up the turf level is simple answer now grass will grow up through it . not as though its a bowling green --or a lawn its just grass , IF it is lawn type grass then not cut short enough ,thats why its so coarse looking --but sort out the level before cutting shorter or you will kill it. shorter you cut it the more watering it will need. you could always convert a thin strip next to it into a border?

  13. The best I can up with is to cover the sand with a dark colour membrane, perhaps a bin liner, and hope the sun will heat the sand up a bit. Same principle as a a solar shower... Well she would get the hump if you heat up one tonne at a time, poor lass.

  14. If OSB can vary in vapor permeability then why not use something like Panelvent? "Panelvent DHF is a 13mm square edged sheathing board designed to replace OSB and plywood as an external lining board. With market leading water vapour resistance values, this board allows the designer the freedom to design breathing structures, free of the risks of interstitial condensation."

  15. Not far at all @Adam2. I was in Poole this morning and took the opportunity to drive round past the Durisol build there. Window forms are in so I'm sure they will be pouring very shortly.

  16. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and research @Sue B really interesting to read. I'm just along the coast from you I think in Boscombe, building in Parkstone. Also ICF enthusiasts, interested to see your concerns re fixing to the walls. I'd considered that and thought that for internal fixings we'd fix structural ply before fixing plasterboard for key areas in kitchen and bathroom. I am thinking now about exterior fixings as after render that isn't so obvious - thinking initially lighting but even simple things like hose reels in garden or in future who knows what. You can of course go through to the concrete but with ~75mm of EPS that isn't ideal and heavy items I'm a little concerned (maybe unnecessarily) about the pressure applied to the wall so will keep researching this. May even have a look at non-EPS/XPS options - we have rear walls which are below ground so need something that is appropriate (of course with waterproofing solution).

  17. But I am FANTASTIC at Lego ?? It’s not the strength but the air-tightness that I think will be different. I know that @JSHarris has previously mentioned that concrete is not necessarily air tight but it has a much better chance than the woodcrete. The difference between the three products is how complete the concrete wall within the formwork will be. During the Durisol training, they were very keen to talk about the product being breathable. Passivhaus and air-tightness were almost dismissed as a goal not worth aiming towards. The MD (a structural engineer) went so far as to state that it made no sense to him as an engineer to make a property air-tight and then introduce an MVHR to bring in ventilation. They also talked about Thermal Mass and I just smiled sweetly and thought of our Jeremy ?. We went to a passivhaus seminar at NSBRC in November and cat flaps were mentioned. IIRC they were mentioned in the hundreds of pounds to much laughter. During the Durisol PowerPoint, a similar cat flap story had become thousands £s. We have a similar story in our family. Peter lost £5 in the sea in Cornwall during our first holiday together when we were mere babes. (17 &19). This was way before children came along and before the lottery existed. That £5 is now referred to by the kids as a winning lottery ticket that would have set them up for life if only their dad hadn’t lost it in the sea - it has taken on a life of it’s own ??.

  18. Agree with @Russell griffiths on this point. Surely that will be a large number of "bloody great holes" ! (Personally I think that recessed spotlights are the spawn of the devil; I have about 70 installed by the previous owner, and the lecky will charge you One Point for wiring each one.) In my view Occam says use either multispot fittings or the more modern LED panels. Plus perhaps spend the recessed spotlght money on a feature light fitting for the hall, an artwork, or whisky. 19. IMHO that looks like a really stupid design so yo install bloody expensive insulation and then cut a hole in it for a light DUR. might as well leave the window open pull the 100mm celotex down and touch the 40 mm against it, then find a shallow light or increase the batten depth, how is she proposing to provide your airtight layer if your going to cut a sodding great hole in it. Sorry that’s rubbish. You can have the best insulation in the world, but if it’s leaky and gappy you might as well leave it out.

  20. Could a tenant's computer have, quite reasonably, added a port forward via UPnP?

  21. You are confusing water vapour permeability with liquid water permeability. The membranes won't let liquid water through (in either direction) but they do allow water vapour through (in both directions).

  23. Back on the subject of washing...... Consider mounting your washer and dryer higher up if you have the room. Makes it so much easier on the back! You need to design the carcass/units well as it’s subject to a fair amount of vibration if you’ve got your big pants on a 1400 spin Heres mine and I don’t think I could go back to ground mounted.....
