  1. Not wanting to detract from this thread so I'll keep it short. Ref the issues between myself and Jeremy, we've been in direct contact throughout the day and the air has I hope been cleared over this. I'm in a better position knowing what apparently went on over eBuild's demise. Jeremy made some comments in haste ref his setting up his own site which riled myself and others. I bit and had a little dig back then and that carried on over to here. Jeremy has been gracious enough to admit this and I've genuinely conveyed my respect for what he's achieved and that I would be sad to see him go. I really do mean that. Apologies also for the self promotion jibe. I'd like to leave it at that. Regards

  2. Well now that I have actually started building I will be going through every one of Jeremy's threads and podcasts to finalise my thinking on our build. His input into heating, cooling and DHW is second to non. In fact the strength of the man ( in my opinion) is his admittance recently that all the technical control systems he designed and experimented with ( and offered to one and all with no cost to himself) was not really needed, a simple room stat proved sufficient ( phew, because I could not keep up with all that Technical stuff). He has even offered to lend his testing kit out to forum members at no cost. I, like others on here, am looking forward to more podcasts from the man himself. Keep it coming Jeremy, this place is a great source of knowledge with some wonderful people but is all the poorer for your absence.

  3. c'mon @Onoff, Why would he go in to the reason it closed (and yes i will vouch it had nothing to do with Jeremy) the podcast was about building, not forums and their politics. From a few of your posts it seems you have got something against Jeremy and i hope it is only because you were under the impression that he was the reason Ebuild closed (which you were wrong about, but that may be out fault for not discussing it a huge amount outside the foundation group), Either way whats wrong with a bit of self promotion, Everybody knows that is the sole reason I Joined Ebuild, it might not be the reason i have stayed so long but there is no hiding the fact if i wasn't trying to get the youtube channel which i have put a fair amount of work into "promoted" to a wider audience. None of you would have ever met me. Chin up Jeremy, Harsh comments get me down as well, not so much here but on my videos, they hurt a lot more than they should and i don't know why, probably because i am only trying to help and it seems very ungrateful that some people say the things they do. either way I think you did the right thing by commenting, There is nothing wrong with a good old bit of arguing back IMO Ed

  5. Jeremy, you've got a hell of a lot of supporters on this site who value what you've done for them and the community as a whole, and there's a couple of members that make the odd dig against you and others. It just seems a shame that you disconnect yourself from this large body of people that support and respect you because of a couple of jibes. I am glad I am not a moderator, because finding the right balance of freedom of speech and censorship, and the upset that some comments can cause is a difficult one to make Anyway, l listened to both the podcasts last night and found them informed and interesting. The site seems a resource worth looking at.

  6. I was about to write 'time flies by with too little progress to show for it' and then realised that was exactly what I said last time! Anyway, since the last update, I have battened out the walls and fitted the first layer of larch cladding on the gables. There was a fair bit of head scratching and working out how the detailing around the windows etc was going to work out before I could get on with the battens. The larch also had to be treated with preservative oil- this will be an ongoing task but it should help keep the wood from looking faded and neglected (even though I gather that look is fashionable for some reason). Another overly time consuming task has been the detailing around the fascia and soffit boards. These things are very easy to draw up on Sketchup but in real life it is much harder to ensure that things are square and level. What I have ended up doing is making up the four barge boards and fitting these, then running string lines between them. I have no idea if this is normal practice but it at least ensures that these highly visible parts of the roof line are symmetrical and match up with each other. On the roof, the battens are ready for the arrival of the corrugated steel sheeting- unfortunately I wasted time chasing some tantalising prices from suppliers further south, which fell down due to delivery costs, and when I eventually ordered from my local BM I was into the Christmas shut down period. Inside the house, I am absolutely delighted to be able to say that ALL of the insulation is complete now. I have 150mm rockwool between rafters and studs, and 50mm of Kingspan over the studs, with 100mm over the rafters. Today's job is to take advantage of the howling gale outside to identify any leakage paths and finish the foaming up between the boards. A tedious task but one that should help me achieve a high airtightness level. The vapour barrier will then go on top to provide the final airtight layer. I have also taken delivery of my stove- a Burley Springdale 3kw model. This is the third woodburner that I have bought (I installed one ine ach of my previous two houses) and it is a real step up in terms of design and built quality. The stove is 100% room sealed, with a single intake that draws from an external duct. The firebox is fully lined in vermiculite blocks, even on the top and bottom, to ensure the hottest and therefore most efficient burn possible. Finally, a stainless steel mesh at the top of the stove acts as a soot catcher to burn off any particulates. It's an impressive piece of kit and I can't wait to get it fired up.

  8. Well I've only had chance to listen to the first podcast and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jeremy does sound far too young However his verbal style is as clear and confident as his writing. As as for the rest of this thread....... GROUP HUG ???

  9. Just to be clear, if he still holds the same view after he's read everything that's circulating by PM, then that's absolutely fine by me. It was the thought that, like lots of former Ebuild members, he didn't know very much about went on over that 24 hour period that concerned me. There were a heck of a lot of rumours flying around, and some normally very calm people lost their tempers over what they thought was going on at the time, including me when I was penalised when all I'd done was get proper (and free) legal advice, as a way of trying to help. It's slightly off-topic, and is in the forum rules (I know, because I put it there when I wrote them) , but still worth a reminder here, I think, as it's pertinent to the point being made. If you write something in a post on a forum, and that is defamatory, or even libellous, then it is you, the poster, that is the person that legal action can be taken against, under normal circumstances. Those of us that started this forum will remember the debates about this, as it was in the front of our minds after Ebuild closed, but the law is very clear, a forum owner cannot normally be held responsible for the content of posts, except under some exceptional circumstances. None of those exceptional circumstances applied in the case of Ebuild, and not one single post that remained in that on-line debacle was libellous. At least three made by the protagonist and instigator of it were potentially libellous, but the moderators had removed them very quickly (within minutes) and so no significant harm was caused. That's not my view, that's the view of the judge who read it all and pronounced on whether or not anything was actionable in his legal opinion.

  10. Jamie, Because this isn't really the best place to give you the answers you seek, and put right the assertions as to my involvement you've made, I'm going to send you, and my other critic, what I know, by PM. I will also copy in all the other founders of these forum. None of us know the whole story, I have to say. BTW, your comment does explain why you were so offensive on that (since deleted) post, but I'm at a loss as to why others feel the same.

  11. If I am expecting a signed for parcel when I am out, I leave a note on the door telling the delivery man where to leave it (currently the unlocked pedestrian door into the garage) and they take that note as a "signature" and leave the parcel.

  12. So checked it and the clocked had stopped at 9pm, turned it more than 360 degress again and guess what... It stopped again at 9pm, which is where I think it was when I first looked at it. Conclusion: the clock has a problem Solution: get a new clock Thanks guys

  13. I plan to have an exterior built in cupboard by the front door for secure delivery of parcels. This is the age of e-commerce and white vans. Suggestions for security are: Yale type night lock, with instruction to delivery person to release the latch once the parcel is delivered; works ok for one parcel delivery. number code lock, with number code issued to delivery person number code lock, with latch released once parcel is delivered Any other ideas from you lateral thinkers?

  15. Only tips I have are... Cement board is hard stuff (and brittle) so use a counter sink drill bit or screws will sit proud. Leave a 5mm gap (ply packers) between the cement board and the wall you are attaching to as the air gap provides for additional insulation and stops heat transfer. My cement board was on top of OSB. Hope this helps

  16. This is how the half day shift started And this was afterwards OSB bit is for the shed and the decking part will be open to the front to create a little *bus shelter* area. And this is the Hut looking dressed up in the snow?

  20. How exciting and good luck. From listening to others on MVHR, it shouldnt make much noise at all. If it does, it might mean its not set up correctly. We are planning to build too hopefully soon but I have always preferred the timber route and they are brilliant these days, no noise from outside, warm and comfortable and its easy to move walls around afterwards. We'll be building a low energy house, looking towards Passivhaus but not bothered if its not quite there. Keep us all informed and we'll enjoy the build with you.

  22. We just have a box outside our front door (rented house) for post and parcels. If we are home the postman opens our door and drops the mail on the mat, if out in the box. If we are here we sign, but if not parcels etc are left, it's just that sort of place. All I'm planning for the new house is a wire basket or similar fixed just inside the garage for parcel delivery, as the garage will be left unlocked. I am however planning a metal post box for letters, although I'll perhaps speak to the postie first and see which he would prefer / find easier.

  23. Agreed re the closure of Ebuild, as I can vouch first hand about that ?. I have 'politely requested' that folk stick to facts and refrain from anything that could be seen as insulting or personally offensive, but it appears that I may need to further promote our policy on that. Fwiw, if I let every little thing get me down, I'd be downy McDown of Downton Abbey, so I've instead just got slightly thicker skin now . Accepting the fact that not everyone gets on with everyone, I'm happy to live with the remainder whom I do get on with and focus solely on that. Life is too short to be affected by the minority and, trust me, I'm not everyone's cup of tea I assure you.

  24. A pity they didn't go into the reasons why eBuild closed. Still, can't let things like that get in the way of a good story and a bit of self promotion.
