Recommended power provision for hob and oven
ProDave replied to MJNewton's topic in Electrics - Kitchen & Bathroom
Not at all. I have a 10mm cable to our island, currently fed from a 16A MCB just feeding a 3 gang pop up socket. The large cable is there in case we change the gas hob for an induction hob. -
I would say with absolute certainty there is no inverter in that one.

It is normal to use 2 poles for DC isolation. Almost certainly for arc quenching. connecting the 2 strings independantly won't do any harm, and might give a slight improvement if any panels get any shading, so I would do it. And I would probably do it on a dark night like tonight.

Scaffolding tent for temporary roofing
ProDave replied to andyscotland's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Making it stand up to the wind will be your biggest challenge. The last few days have been "west coast" weather here for sure. It has barely stopped raining since Friday, most unusual for this side. I have had the scaffold up to fit a velux window now for well over a month. I am almost resigned to the fact it is not happening this year. -
Recommended power provision for hob and oven
ProDave replied to MJNewton's topic in Electrics - Kitchen & Bathroom
Fit 10mm from CU to isolator to Cooker Connection Unit. You can then use a 6mm tail from there to hob and oven with 32A mcb. the purpose of the thicker cable is "in case" -
Yes that is with the optional flush mounting box. If you want to mount them without that and so look less bulky, the only way I ever found was set a round dry lining box into the ceiling. Of course I find many just with a hole in the ceiling and a bare choc block connector above the ceiling. I suspect an awful lot are fitted like that.
-
Please post pictures if you have any. Just about every one I have fitted apart from Aico just have 3 bare wires to terminate to UNLESS you also buy the optional "flush" mounting box which does give you terminal space, but makes them much more bulky and stick down from the ceiling more. The only solution I ever found for non Aico was to set a round dry lining box into the ceiling to avoid the extra bulk and cost of the flush mounting kit.

That's an interesting map, especially when you zoom in. 95% of properties where I live don't have access to mains gas. It is also interesting that detached houses outnumber all other types. VERY different to the statistics in the nearby towns. Oil is the predominant heating type here. No mention of LPG, I take it that is covered by "other" of which there are just 3 houses in our area.
-
The problem with bulk LPG is you cannot just get anyone to fill your tank. That is the bit that should change. With an oil tank, you can phone all the suppliers to get their price and choose one, and do that every time you fill up using a different supplier each time. You can even play one against the other to get a better price. The same is true of bottled LPG that only the "owner" of a cylinder can fill it, in spite of a Calor 47Kg cylinder being identical to a Mac Gas one,
-
I thought they were one of the ones with just a flying lead exiting from the top and you have to magic up a junction box (i.e conduit box or similar) in the ceiling for the junction. A lot more faff than Aico with their decent terminal box.
-
The North South divide works backwards here with bottled LPG being a lot more expensive.

MVHR newbie.. help needed
ProDave replied to Savage87's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I did a "Blue Peter Method" DIY air test a while back -
Another option that I will run past SWMBO later is glass shelves. They are a lot easier to source in a variety of colours and sizes and easy to mount on twinslot racking which would be both easy and neat.
-
We find when we fire up the WBS, if we put the MVHR on "kitchen boost" (which is a slower boost rate than bathroom boost) is does seem to help move heat upstairs.

You can get some pretty good bargains on ebay, e.g. this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AICO-Ei141RC-MAINS-IONISATION-SMOKE-ALARM-DETECTOR-BATTERY-BACK-UP-C-W-BASE/293219856329?epid=12034398083&hash=item444543efc9%3Ag%3A9nQAAOSwh8pdtwLk&LH_BIN=1&LH_ItemCondition=1000

I only fit Aico. Just about the only manufacturer with proper terminations for a flush mounting system. I like the fact Aico do a combined heat and CO detector. I wish they would pull their finger out and also do a combined smoke and CO.

Controlling Air blower for waste water treatment system
ProDave replied to mfmcdonagh's topic in Waste & Sewerage
If I am understanding that correctly, two hoses exit the blower housing, and the solenoid switches beteween them. So is spends 1 minute blowing down one hose followed by 59 minutes blowing down the other. -
My planning application just showed a rectangle on the plan saying "ground mounted solar PV array" with absolutely no details. they never asked for any details I just bought what I could afford and installed that,.

Controlling Air blower for waste water treatment system
ProDave replied to mfmcdonagh's topic in Waste & Sewerage
That seems very strange timing. I can't think only having the air blowing for 1 minute each hour does much. The only one I have seen that came with a manufacturers timing system was a Graff, and that turns the pump on and off roughly 50% duty cycle over a 15 minute period. Does it state 1 minute per hour in the instructions or is that just what you observe? -
Planning rules are strange here, Although there is a strong vernacular here that you must keep to (white render finish, no more than 1 1/2 storey, 45 degree slate roof etc) it is surprising how many all timber houses are allowed that are completely out of keeping with the vernacular. However I have seen a statement that A frame houses are no longer allowed.

Planning breech to be made arrestable
ProDave replied to Temp's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
Something needs to be done about travellers. I don't have an issue in principle with a nomadic life style, but I do have an issue with their blatant breaking of lots of other laws like fly tipping etc which they rarely get prosecuted for. So having some other law that they can be charged with seems a good thing. -
2 leftover pallets make up the base of my log store. You end up with a lot of pallets when you build a house and you have to find something to do with them. Shed, Bike rack, temporary steps, log store, and if all else fails, firewood.

We have wet UFH in our bathroom and en-suite. It works to take the chill off the floor but it is not very effective at heating the room. At first I thought it was the spreader plate system we used. But the very same spreader plates in the utility room work very well. I now thing the problem may be the tanking membrane that went down before the tiles is a damned good insulator?
-
At our old house that used oil, I watched the price througout the summer at https://www.boilerjuice.com/heating-oil-prices/ It was almost always cheapest about late August which is when we filled the tank for the winter.

I have just one of the "perfect" item, A 900mm by 400mm by 20mm thick stone worktop offcut. I got this with a load of other stone offcuts from someone on Freecycle. Most were used for the stone hearth and surround when we put the WBS in the caravan. This one I have left is the temporary hearth for the stove at the moment but can't remain as it is not big enough and when we get the kitchen worktop done we will get a matching proper sized hearth made. The trouble with offcuts is you are not going to get enough that match. I think we need in the order of 10 stone shelves. We have slate flooring which we like but would prefer something smother and easier to wipe clean for this application.
