Heat Pumps & Hydrogen Powered Boilers Book
Dave Jones replied to Des Ingham's topic in Introduce Yourself
What you won’t read on here is the other side of the argument. In fairness as far as heat pumps go on this forum you are preaching to the converted. Largely because the people here are smart, motivated and investing their hard earned and want the cream. And fair play to them. They are the niche. Let’s talk existing housing stock heated by predominantly gas combis. Replace the gas combi with a heat pump. Unless you want to freeze you would need to treble the surface area of the radiators, you will have lost the ability to have multiple baths/showers and more importantly your energy bill will at least treble compared to using gas. So its a lose, lose, lose and lose scenario which any sane person will ignore. Cost wise its a factor of 4 more expensive to ditch gas and install a heat pump compared to a modern efficient combi. Who knows how much all these heat pumps will cost to get working again in 6-10 years after they all start wearing out. Now lets look at new build. The developers have the option to make houses super efficient and air tight, at a cost. This cost will put everything out of the reach of first time buyers for sure let alone finding any subbies who can do the extra work. So will it happen in the next 10 years ? no chance. Gov mandate is more housing that people can afford. Yes they can fit underfloor heating and heat pumps but as young families will find, it will be going back to the 70's where after dad has had a bath there is no hot water left. The bills in the deep of winter will be immense when heat pumps are least efficient and the poorest who use tokens will be unable to plan ahead as you need to turn on the heat yesterday if you don’t want to freeze today. Unlike gas which you pay the meter, turn up the stat and an hour later you are warm and have unlimited hot water. So no heat pumps are not the answer for the country not by a long shot. -
do you mean the joists are into the web of the RSJ ? Whats above ?

Drainage Run Help!
Dave Jones replied to Mulberry View's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
just need a laser level and its sorted. set chamber B the deepest it will go and still give fall to the mains and work back. who said you needed a pumped chamber ? topo survey normally lift the lids and give an invert reading. -
Drainage Run Help!

in a nutshell, chamber B needs to be HIGHER than the mains chamber by 13mm/m or 420mm to achive a minimum fall. -

11.8 seems bloody deep, are you sure its over 11m deep or are you referencing a datum ? -
bed is irrelevant, they lay them to a string line set with a fall. If your paver doesn't know how to lay to a string line get another one.
-
get it scaffolded, while they are doing it ask them for a good roofer they do work for all the time.

agree with both! Have to make sure you have a good sealed lid on the chamber or it will lift it off. We had 12m of 63mm to lay and as you say its not a pleasant job.
-
if you have the height false ceiling is cheapest option.
-
why bother with concrete its not needed. good 6" well compacted hardcore base and the slabs laid on a good bed of sharp sand and cement. They will never move.
-
63mm is standard, you can get a 63 to 110 coupler.

expamet should really be used on piers not wall ties, costs peanuts as well.

Screening Ideas to Block Chronic Curtain-Twitchers

i am a fan of this style. -
you could straighten the run between the pumping station and tank and get away with a single chamber and do the same with the outflow. They are cheap and easy to install now and come the unplanned blockage you will be very glad you added them.

Extending garden to include what’s on the deeds

you need proof the neighbour is parking on your land. Personally i would get an indemnity policy from the seller that you can claim against come the day you move the fence onto the neighbours space and it kicks off. -
check the original permission to see if PD rights were withdrawn.
