A retired roofer meets Nulok. Too delicious.
Gone West replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
@recoveringacademic I like Carly Simon, but I can't see her . -
No, we don't have any moss or lichen growing on the tiles. There is no evidence of any problems at all. When we bought the system one of the advertising claims was that nothing grew on the tiles. The only growth we have on the tiles is a very thin green algae type on the front edge of the tile which can be easily rubbed off and this is only where the tiles never see the sun. The tiles are porcelain and impervious.

The single storey roof is 5.3m x 3.7m. It took me three days IIRC. My roof has OSB sarking and 100mm x 50mm rafters on top with 50mm Rockwool RW6 batts between. Then the membrane and the steel battens on top. The single storey roof was designed for PVs and I am considering fitting PVs panels this year. I would use hanger bolts through the tiles into the rafters for holding the PV mounting bars.

Where the tiles butt up is supported by the channels, so I walk on the cracks. -
It's more DIY than any other system I found at the time. You use less tiles because they butt up side to side and rain drains into the channel under where they touch. The clips spring into the channel and hold the two adjacent tiles. I did the small single storey on the left hand side completely myself. I battened the rest of the roof myself and had some Nu-Lok roofers tile it. They were here for less than a week, can't remember exactly how long. I didn't fancy cutting my teeth on dormers so just did the single storey.

Depends how heavy you are I have walked up ours without breaking a tile, just think where the tile is best supported. On mine it's two clips per tile. -

Weight, because they only overlap in one plane. They use their 'own' PVs. -
It certainly is, we did ours seven years ago. Don't believe anything they tell you about not going green. It's true moss and lichen don't grow on the tiles but any tiles permanently in the shade seem to get a green coating along the front edge.

Advice on Bird and Bat Boxes
Gone West replied to Ferdinand's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
I would take issue with the last recommendation. In the summer when the weather is hot they are unlikely to use a south facing box and more likely to use a north facing box. I have only fitted them around the perimeter of woodland, not on houses. -
Advice on Bird and Bat Boxes
Gone West replied to Ferdinand's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
Hope that's a joke, as bats are mammals. Bat boxes for roosting should be sited facing in different directions, for instance the north facing ones will be used in the summer and the others at different times of the year. When I was a trustee of the local woodland trust we installed a lot of bat boxes for roosting. -
measuring energy use

I have a Peacefair monitor, straightforward to set up but a little lacking in safety features. Well it is from China. https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/PEACEFAIR-AC-80-260V100A-LED-Current-Voltage-Watt-Energy-Voltmeter-Ammeter-TTL-Port-With-Split-CT/1773456_32707303828.html?spm=a2g1y.12024536.productList_14339702.pic_2 -
I used Lacomet which was easy to use for flat or straight folds.

Clear paint for weather proofing OSB sheet.

'Fraid so. I was using it for standing the concrete mixer on. I then used some old ply, but that's had it now. Found a newer bit which has a bit of life left in it, so hopefully it will see out the concrete mixer until I sell it. I got rid of the last four concrete lintels the other day on Freegle. I put them on last year but no one was interested, two people wanted them this time. -
I've never touched the cedar cladding on my place when it's wet, but it's turned various shades of grey depending on how much rain hits it. If you haven't painted anything onto the surface then I'm sure it's fine.

According to the instructions, the AAVs I've used can be used below maximum water level height, although I have placed them just above.

Appliances Direct - Electriq - any experiences?
Gone West replied to Radian's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
I looked into air to air units some time ago. The electriQ range uses Panasonic compressors according to the AirCon Direct site and £400 for 9000Btu sounds good. https://www.aircondirect.co.uk/p/879042/9000-btu-panasonic-powered-a-easy-fit-inverter-wall-split-air-conditioner-with-5-meters-pipe-kit-and-5-years-warranty -
We weren't asked for any type of ecology report by the planners despite living next to two farms and being surrounded by orchards and open fields. Mind you with the way they farm around here there isn't much wildlife to report on .

That's Wendy's argument. Wendy didn't fry, 26/27C is comfortable for Wendy. Anyway it looks like I'll have another summer to consider it as it will take some time to finish the garden.
-
I've been told I can't start making a brise soleil until the garden is finished. We won't need one by the time that's done.
-
Well having the correct data makes all the difference. Thanks @epsilonGreedy that'll teach me to cut and paste without checking. Wendy won't be happy but it looks like we will need one after all. It now looks more like I expected it to.
-
Isn't that longitude. I think the North refers to hemisphere. No you're right it should be 51.292297.

Before we move into our house last year I had designed a brise soleil to shade our lift slide doors which are the only south facing glazing we have. Needless to say I never actually made it and having lived in the house for the first summer and now winter I’m not sure it’s needed. We had a nice lot of solar gain recently which meant there was no heating on in the house. IIRC last summer the sun only penetrated around 600mm into the room on the floor. I’ve run the software linked to by @Cambs and results suggest I would lose too much solar gain when I need it from October to February. Any comments? The doors are shaded completely before 12.00.

Many thanks for trying. Would you be willing to supply the name of the blind and the company you bought them from?
-
They look good. We are currently experimenting with different blinds that attach directly to the glazing. Wendy would like to see what the rails look like from the outside. Would you be willing to post a picture?

I can't tell from that if it is OSB3 or OSB2, the 03 might mean OSB3 or 2+ mean OSB2. Mine is Sterling Board OSB3 15mm thick although all markings have long disappeared.
