Is there a good alternative to Plywood for subfloor?
PeterW replied to carlosdeanos's topic in Floor Structures
6mm ply isn’t that expensive and is more resilient than 6mm MDF. MR MDF is about the same price as ply anyway. -
I’ve got a full set of 110v festoons that need new bulbs in and you can have them for the postage. You can always chop the 110v plug off and wire a 230v plug on and use IKEA LED bulbs in them if you want. Best thing I have though for task lighting is a 1200x300mm LED panel that’s on a short cable - super bright and indestructible.

Shower, hot water options
PeterW replied to ash_scotland88's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Yes because the plumbers love them as it’s 4 pipes and a controller and they still get paid a grand to fit it. I’ve never seen a combi cope with two decent showers, and you need a lot of flow and pressure to cope with it anyway. System boiler, 25mm into the house, 22mm to the UVC and balanced cold then 15mm to the showers. -
Which cheap tool has surprised you most (in a good way)
PeterW replied to MortarThePoint's topic in Tools & Equipment
Friends own an office supplies company and they are saying they saw a 600% increase in sales last year with people setting up home working offices. They sold out of both new and second hand chairs - they are now buying in stock from large businesses that are closing down their major sites and moving people to home based. -
Render, EWI and DPC - Advice needed
PeterW replied to canalsiderenovation's topic in Plastering & Rendering
Ok did it not say product type as 50mm EPS / PIR / PUR will have different uValues so that should be stated on the BRegs design as it affects the SAP and energy scoring.- 7 replies

your radon layer is in the wrong place. If you have beam / block or beam / EPS in your case, you ventilate the under floor cavity.

You need about 3° fall not 15° unless you like digging deep holes ..!! Geotex provided is fine - it’s just to stop soil getting into the crates.

You’d need to work out how to get the new one in too ..! I do sometimes wonder what installers are thinking when they install these ..!!
-
Will what work ..? Not quite sure what the photo is showing ..?? Can I check that those floor joists aren’t just bolted to a single 4x2 with one bolt each ..??! What’s below that floor ..?? And what stops the 4x2 buckling ..???

Sensor will slide out of its pocket. Just remove the link grub screw and twist it a little to break any potential corrosion. They are dry pockets so no water should escape.
-
Just make sure they can be opened as fire escape windows. They may require sprung hinges.

Errr none ... wouldn’t pay up front for anything.

How many concurrent showers are you planning on running as a 24kW combi has a crap flow rate. Heating load depends on the heat losses of the house - new build ..? Insulation levels ..??

New glazing, leave the pins in post putty?
PeterW replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Windows & Glazing
No just make sure the pins are below the level of the putty. -
Ahh ok ..!
-
@JulianB you need an expansion vessel on your heat pump circuit somewhere with a PRV.

If you’re building a new wall then just insert an air brick on a telescopic sleeve, then use an airbrick to round duct adapter below ground, and the whole thing will be hidden inside the wall.
-
Hep2O everywhere it’s hidden. Copper where it isn’t. Couldn’t imagine doing something now without it.

It’s fine - I do it, have to book a slot at the council office and then go down and get given the Microfiche I want to view. Can print paper copies from the microfiche. Notts County Council was even nicer - office overlooking Trent Bridge and had access to the paper files too. -
What type of contract are you going to try and use to impose that ..?? Who says what caused an overrun ..? What about bad weather ..? Failure of one of your suppliers to deliver by a week..? Can the contractor take costs from you if your windows are a week late ..? Can they claim for overruns from you ..?? All things to consider in a fair contract, and if they have priced without seeing the contract terms don’t be surprised if they don’t want the job. Quote..? Fixed Price..? Firm Price ..? All different. Nope - if you get drawings done and approved by BCO, build to the drawings then you get approval. That’s the rules. Cost / function ..?? Improve your roof slope to 22.5° and then use slate on battens. Quick, cheap and understood by roofers. I don’t think this has been value engineered by design, I think you’re trying to build something that isn’t really viable at the cost you want to pay, and you’re trying to pass your risk to a contractor.

How far from the main to the house ..? And any non-standard things such as sprinklers required .?? 25mm would be fine for anything “standard”
