  1. What sort of glue did you use to bond the ply to the ESP? What grade of ESP did you use? I assume the denser the ESP the greater the shear strength? I’ll be starting to glue together my DIY EPS foundations in a couple of week, hence the interest. Now where was that thread about hot wire cutters?
  2. We live in a very well designed insulated timber frame tiny house (50m2). If we light the wood burning stove, about 30 minutes later we have to open a window to let the excess heat out.
  3. I’ve used offcuts for stuffing between rafters in the past. I started by stuffing the first one in, then used low expansion foam to put a bead on the joining face before stuffing the next one on, and so on. Time consuming but satisfying. You often see loads of such offcuts in skips. You could probably fill the whole rafter space using freeby offcuts! Might be worth asking your local timber frame company what they do with theirs !
  4. I'd suggest less wall and more insulation,. having less wall will also reduce to load on the raft and possibly make it simpler to construct. With more insulation you retain the thicker walls and have a lot warmer feel inside the house and smaller heating bills.
  5. For those living in the London area, closure of a builders merchant and their stuff being auctioned off. https://www.bidspotter.co.uk/en-gb/auction-catalogues/peter-davies-and-sons-ltd/catalogue-id-peter-1-10020?utm_source=bs-fa-19/01/2018&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Peter Davies & Sons Limited&utm_content=catlink No doubt we'll be seeing more of the same over the coming months!
  6. Is that £14 or £41 ? Ive also been offered XPS 300 at a slightly cheaper price of £12.21 / m2. As I need 256m2 this saves my a couple of hundred quid, every saving helps!
  7. I’m just about to start my insulated foundations and have been getting prices for EPS 100 and EPS 300. So far the best price I’ve got for 2400 x 1200 x 100mm sheets are - EPS 100 £14.65 per sheet or £5.09 / m2 EPS 300 £36.85 per sheet or £12.79 / m2 Can anyone better these prices?
  8. Looking good. We've just finished digging fir the foundations, so still a long way to go for us!
  9. @Onoff so from what I’ve read the XPS is probably a better product, good! Are there any practical problems is using XPS, i assume it can be cut and bonded in the same manner as EPS?
  10. The LEDs must be for providing pretty coloured water!
  11. Well after 18 months delay selling our previous house and 6 months demolishing the dilapidated bungalow on our self Build site, we are finally digging out for foundations. So I've been getting quotes for the Insulation for the insulated foundations. I’ve received three for EPS and all have come back with a price between £8,100 and £9,800. I’ve then received a bit of curved ball from a company who no longer do the EPS, but have quoted based on XPS (extruded) and their quote is £3,500 less than the lowest EPS quote. Is there any disadvantage of using XPS. Any help or suggestions greatfully received.
  12. I’ve start ordering the components for my insulated foundations. One item im unsure about is Foamglass blocks. The SE calls for four Foamglas Perinsul blocks measuring 220 x 215mm, ( these go under two beams) I’ve tried the local builders merchants and drawn blank looks! Any suggesting as to suppliers?
  13. Well we’ve demolished the old house and just finished digging the basement, I must get the self Build insurance sorted!
  14. When I sold a renovation property I couldn’t find the Fensa certificate, I recall that £20 for indemnity insurance made the problem go away.
  15. @Nickfromwales thanks for th advice and the links, just bid on one of them. Happy days. Now off to buy replacement drill batteries.
  16. I’ve looked at the Bosch cube style ones. Thinking about it, a two axis laser will do everything I need it to do. Ideally I’d like to spend less than £100, ideally around £50 to £70.
  17. I’m putting together my Christmas wish list and one of the things I’m thinking of adding is a cube type laser level, ideally something that will project lines on the x,y and z axis. Can anyone recommend something suitable?
  18. Clearly the stuff I bought on EBay wasnt stainless steel wool, so I’ll avoid that partucula4 suppliers n future. Out of interest who was your supplier?
  19. Thanks for the offer, pity you’re so far away.
  20. The stainless steel wire wool rodent barrier located behind the base of my larch cladding, turned out not to be stainless at all and has started to rust and fall out. Can anyone suggest a supplier of 1” wide stainless steel wire wool, so that I can replace the rotten stuff?
  21. It’s time to buy new batteries for my Ryobi and Bosch cordless drills and drivers. Having looked on line, the manufacturers own brand is about twice the price of the no name replacements. So do I buy branded batteries or is there a decent and reliable after market replacement battery supplier out There?
  22. Regarding pining railway sleepers together, we use a long 1/2 inch drill bit and 1/2 inch reinforcing bars driven through the holes.
  23. Ive excavated around 800 tonnes of limestone and have the space to loose most of it. I had in mind to crush around 200 tonnes to use to level up the site prior to putting down a layer of soil and then grass. The rest I’d use under patios and pathways. I’m based in the South Lakes, so any recommendations in that area would be welcome.
  24. Do you have any contacts for the crusher bucket hire?
  25. Just ignore him, give an inch and he’ll take a mile.
