  1. Hi all, I’m budgeting for a new build but trying to trim some costs. The design guide requires Staffordshire blue clay tiles but there are numerous local buildings have slate. I’m told the clay tiles are expensive so I’m looking at changing to slate if I can persuade the LPA. Has anyone conducted a similar comparison that they’d be willing to share ?
  2. Hi all, I have seen quite a few old threads, comparing costs of different manufacturers for glazing (specifically we are hoping to get 2g aluminium clad timber). I have studied the old threads in great detail and approached a good many companies that have been mentioned for glazing quotes. The biggest issue I have had, is that when I think I have been applying directly through the websites of individual manufacturers, (Velfac, Internorm, Rational, etc) I have then been referred on to local "partners"/ "agents", consisting of only one company, local to me who supplies all these brands. I am worried that this rather takes away the competition element, to help drive down quotes, if all my options are being supplied by one company. ? Have things changed over the last few years? Why do I seem unable to go direct to the majority of manufacturers (exceptions have been Nordan & Munster - although seeing the reviews for Munster I don't think I will go through them!)? Is it the area I live in (Devon)? Or have I gone the wrong way about getting quotes i.e. do I need to ring them rather than filling in online forms and attaching my plans?
  3. I must be missing something but, it might be the wine but I am blowed if I can find Howdens prices on line - I have an account and I can log in and look at invoices etc but there does not seem to be a place on the Howdens web site to log in and see prices. What an I missing?
  4. hi im looking for images that people may have or info on the bradstone keinton in masonry block type and in t form, these people seem to be hard work trying to track down samples and what actual types your looking at. Anyone ever used this stuff before? Any areas i should look out for when thinking of using this stuff. My thoughts were to combine the stone work with forticrete heads and sills along with flat finish coins Thanks
  5. I’m just about to start my insulated foundations and have been getting prices for EPS 100 and EPS 300. So far the best price I’ve got for 2400 x 1200 x 100mm sheets are - EPS 100 £14.65 per sheet or £5.09 / m2 EPS 300 £36.85 per sheet or £12.79 / m2 Can anyone better these prices?
  6. I needed a 50m roll of green plastic mesh fencing, looking online the price was around £20 per roll. So as I was passing Travis Perkins I called in for a price, £48 +vat, the next port of call, the local independent BM, same price as TP. Finally I went to Screwfix, the same roll of fences £23.75 inc vat.
  7. Great Crested Newts. Bless them, and bless the planners one and all. Here we all are a year -closer to two- years later than planned and winter's on its way. The question is simple: buy the expensive stuff now and store, or wait until Spring? Key things to source: Durisol building blocks (a form of ICF) Windows German (yeah, yeah, right) plumbing bits and bobs Here's the RICS on the subject for September Storage is a bit of an issue, and with windows it is an issue - maybe I'll be able to buy now for delivery next year..... I feel an OUCH! coming on. I'm really scratching my head over this one. I'd appreciate a non-political focus on this one please.
