Every Man-Jack-One-Of-Us here started with a dream - some call it an idea, others a thought, others a hope. And the process of turning those notions into to well-formed plans is called compromise. Millions of them. Some small, others painful, many based on howthehelldowedigourselvesoutofthismess. Only you are in contact with your dreams. Many of the compromises you will have to face are hidden at the moment. So steal away Don't stop looking or stealing, eh?

That is exactly what we did. As so often @Russell griffiths is right - so, play it long, and then pop a porker on it. -

Kwikstage scaffolding questions

Mine have been 'out' for three years ... no issues. Make sure they are stacked properly (stickered) so they don't start to rot. -
The price range was £22000 to £6500 depending on the specification. We had to have piles ; but our SE reminded us that there are piles and piles.... We chose to use stone improvement columns (piles by any other name) they were much cheaper, much quicker than steel sleeved concrete (specified by the ground survey company) and far less hassle. The company that did them was superb. PM me if you want a contact. The bottom line - no hassle or worry and 17k cheaper. And we now have 64 soakaways under the house ?
-
If it was that easy we'd all be at it. What happens when the ground survey is 'wrong' and you bump into a small incursion of mudstone - as happened on our site? 64 piles cost us £6500. £100 a pile: it ain't wurf it mate it ain't wurf it.

Constructive Pessimism. Useful?
ToughButterCup posted a topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I was introduced to the idea recently. Seems to me to be a useful way of heading off some of the insolence of fortune - and a way preparing for old age. Strikes me that Constructive Pessimism has a role to play in our sector. What do you think? -
Double check valves. Why? Where? Says who?
ToughButterCup replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Plumbing
Thanks. Is there a public document where I can read the rules? -
And just when I thought I was getting my plumbing well organised, I bumped into the terms 'check valve' and 'double check valve' in a YooChube video about fitting taps. Scheiße - schon wieder , verdammt noch mal ! At this stage of the game, I'm getting really tired: folks, could someone give me a quick sentence on where they should be fitted - and maybe a quick word or two of sageness about how not to use them? Please? Danke.
-
If you can get it. Apologies for sounding a negative note: forewarned, forearmed ? In terms of ICF, PM me for a recommendation
-
For them, that's a very common customer reaction. And one they will likely ignore. What were the grounds for refusal? Are those grounds reasonable?

Not worth a post is it? Unless those three holes are in the slab. At one stage, we planned to duct our MVHR from the piggery (a small building 5 meters from the main house) into Salamander Cottage. But @TerryE and others dissuaded me (condensation risk). Thanks. Now I need to back-fill the holes. Since they come through the slab, I thought I'd check a bit of radon barrier at the very bottom 500mm of EPS some fairly strong concrete on top Kinda hoping it's as easy as that.....

When visiting, always wear work clothes - dirty ones. -
I'm beginning to wish Id never heard the name SunAmp. The idea and the theory is so appealing. The reality is niggly, piggly lack of attention to detail. If ever there was a case for the application of boring, clumping Teutonic thoroughness and attention to detail, this is one. Scheiße ist das alles.

Good to see properly stored (stickered) wood

Interesting. Thanks for the post. How are you dealing with the penetrations to the Impey waterproofing layer? I've just been on a course run by Impey, and they did not cover that aspect of the installation..... ?

Get the cheapest. Peter Millard does a comparison between the £30 Aldi version and a £600 one. Virtually no difference. (Easier to clean and maintain)

Ok, then Big Boy ..... ?? H1, Page 8, Diagram 2 , Cross Section A, Key Both @ProDave's point , and indeed @joe90, nudged my thinking a bit further: it makes sense NOT to do what I initially propose. Its just as easy to insert a Y further up the line. That said, I now know the Regs a bit better: time not completely wasted, then.?

I know that .... now. But any non-plumber looking at a T can see it looks like a Y and - if you don't know there's such a thing as a proper Y ... a few frustrating hours searching Tinternet disappears into the ether . I don't know what I don't know. If I did I wouldn'a started (from here)

@ProDave, the Tee sits on the stack: upstairs loo piping descends to the left-hand branch and the right hand branch to the downstairs loo. Bosses used for hand basins. And, while admitting that a little learning is a (in this case) very dangerous thing, My sh!t chute is swept, baby, swept Man, that's a badly formed r .... I wanna meet your infant teacher.

Thank you so much. ( Edited to add for completeness: Approved Document G3, 3.19 : Water heaters with a capacity of 15 litres or less that have appropriate safety devices for temperature and pressure will generally satisfy the requirement set out in G3(3). Building Regulatiopns 2010 Approved Document G, page 21.) Are you in the least surprised that I've ended up salivating over their kit? The only little alarm bell going off in my head is a comment I remember J making (years ago: ebuild?) about what Stiebel refer to as '.... temperature raised by 25 C ... ' In other words I need to satisfy myself that a cold-only supply will suffice.

Thats what happens when a know-nothing like me reads about unvented water heaters. Its a painful process. Don't half learn a lot though.
