Does that make my water considerably harder or softer than yours?? I've found the answer, your water is classed as very hard, mine is hard

@PeterStarck Thanks for that, just checked my water hardness and this is what I got: Water hardness type: Hard Water hardness average: 84.6mg/l calcium which according to an online converter equates to 84.696638834ppm. Does that make my water considerably harder or softer than yours??

@JSHarris, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I had realised that they are not a water softener in the "normal" terms. I believe the associated bumph actually tells you as much. I think it mentions the "dust" effect as well but states this can be wiped off. Tea tasting funny??, well I guess what it tastes like now is what I'm used to so a proper softener may make it taste funny to me Thanks for the link, I'll take a look at these. As stated I won't be needing one for quite a while yet (still waiting for warm weather to pour the slab) but it's always nice to have an idea of what to aim for.

I appreciate where you're coming from on the telling him beforehand basis. But looking at it where you are now, if he isn't prepared to do what you request, then the solution is notch the back rail, as minimal as possible, and seal the raw edges using PVA or silicone.

Why not just notch the back rail??

It reads to me as though they have changed the wording believing that you may get PP but struggle with the ecological side, hence knock 5k off and be assured of the 16k.

My opinion, and that's all it is, is that once the services are under a beam and block floor they are then safe from any risk of being dug up inadvertently and so I can't see any reason to keep things so deep. Perhaps the water should remain at 750mm to negate the risk of freezing and keep your local water company happy. I have no doubt someone will come along in a minute and say completely the opposite
