  1. My sister has taught at Harvard and in China and is head of dartment at a large U.K. uni But concedes many degrees are a waste of time As they are not relevant to employers needs But fun to take
  2. I used to be part of the work exsperience scheme But I’m no long affiliated as most sites wont allow under 18s now
  3. I’ve been tiling framing plastering for 40 years now It was a lot harder years back We used to lay a screed in the morning and go on it with. boards in the afternoon Neat cement No fancy flexible adhesives All plasters hand mixed with a rake A lot has changed
  4. A 910 opening to accommodate a 900 frame 838 door size Probably the most common door size Add 100 mill for disabled access
  5. I plaster blocks of timber frame student accommodation each year Weather you tape and joint or plaster you will always get far more cracking than traditional built houses Timber swells and drys
  6. If you put them 25 mil away from the wall the gap will still cover with the plaster The main reason is sound will carry right around your house You don’t nead a uniform gap If you use 10 mil as a minimum You find the gap will increase a decrease as you go Unless the blockwork is absolutely true
  7. All of the above The main one with ours is disabled access They have informed me that I can build a ramp out of ply and cover it with mineral felt As we intend to pave with a sweeping ramp 1-20 I think they said with a 1200x1200 flat landing by and flush to the door
  8. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it Dont forget to leave a 15 mil gap around the perimeter Lots of glue on top of the joists
  9. Yes We are using them on a couple of jobs I slipped up on the first You shouldn’t use collated They need to go in in singles with an impact driver batterie circular saw and jigsaw for sockets I’ve spent 3 k on three kits Normally get around 35 per man as aposed to 50 plaster boards per day
  10. Habito are about the best on the market In terms of impact and fixing to Also cost Don’t forget to allow 35 % extra for labour
  11. It strange how some SE like pile foundations Others don’t We are on simalar conditions to you and went for deep strip and clay board
  12. Gypliner is only 10 mil deep 50 wide Used mainly on refurbs to line cielings and walls Where space is at a premium Set at 600 centres and fixed with brackets at 800 apart
  13. I’ve a simalar one to start this week Whilst the external walls arnt Stone There is no cavity So very cold We have decided to gypline frame these and use a 100 or 65 mil insulated plasterboard No possibility of causing any damp issues and will make a very warm house when finished I can post some pictures later in the week if this method is of interest to you
  14. Actually I say I hired WE hired I shuveld and my wife drove up and down for four hours She says that there are less polatics on a building site than in a office
  15. I hired a drive on roller Droped at 8am Picked up at 12 £50 Great bit of kit
  16. Dewalt have a cheap plunge saw for around 250 It will do the job I think I paid around 700 for Hilti about ten years back It’s had some abuse cutting vent boards But still going strong You can’t put a price on those pinky’s
  17. They are brilliant Acurate and SAFE I’ve had mine for quite a few years They quite new and exspensive back then So Quik to rip sheets down Including cement board
  18. I sympathise with you For me things like these where the most frustrating part of the build Somthing that you have no control over You will drive yourself mad trying to second guess We needed to run across next door but ones garden with our drainage Demolish two hedges and a shed We braced our selfs for the cost In reality he could of asked for any amount We would of had to pay He said re instate the hedges and grass and get rid of the the old shed No money changed hands BC control Knocked on his door to inspect He simply said No and shut the door People can suprised you
  19. The Hilti have a Seperate mag and bit that simply push onto the batterie or corded gun The makita and others are more diy
  20. I’ve been using Hilti collated screw mags for over 20 year If I saw a framer using singles It would set alarm bells ringing i cant rember the last time I saw someone using singles A lot of lads lease there tools from Hilti I get the collated mags fo a £100 each Two year guarantee Far superior to any other We just chuck them after two years
  21. But and a big But if you contact mybuilder or simal you will find a plumber happy to work for £120 per day and will also tidy your garden Clear your gutters etc for the same rate
  22. Most I know base a day on 200 minimum Which isn’t a lot even for a sole trader No holidays pension or sick pay
  23. I blame Kirsty Her and Phil would show a couple round a house Tap on a wall Builser for a day £100 Carpenter £100 Plumber Plasterer £500 job done
  24. I was one of those that had no financial worries In that we had saving to cover the whole build But there is still pressure one bit of advice I would give is don’t exspect anyone to care about your build as much as you do The trades will go home at the end of each day and forget about it You won’t You hear plenty of doom and gloom Often not as bad as things sound But more stressful than some of the tv builds If you can catch some of the back episodes of building the dream They will give you a good grounding Far more realistic than Grand Designs
