Opinions on Dulux Diamond Matt and Johnstones Perfect Matt?
wozza replied to MJNewton's topic in Decorating
I will be painting very soon, all areas have already had a mist coat of Leyland Trade Contract (using Harris Short pile pro rollers - highly recommend also) We were thinking of using Armstead Durable Matt White due to good reviews and as its cheaper than the Dulux at around £30 for 5 litre and its apparently a very very similar formula but we might now give the Wickes paint a try at £18. -
Advice required please new tiles with old
wozza replied to Vaders brother's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
It looks like you have 2 different brands of tiles, that is a terrible bodge that is not fit for purpose - the join is not water tight so you will be relying on the felt / membrane to keep water out. Marley Bold Roll, Redland Regent and Sandtoft (not sure on the tile name) all look very similar but do not lock in together correctly - they are all slightly different. They look the similar to mine - I have Marley Bold Roll on one roof and and Redland Regent on another. Marley stopped making Bold roll a while back so you cannot buy new ones, so we chose Redland. (Marley Bold Roll are available from a lot of reclamation yards but are silly money. The quickest fix for your issue would be a bonding gutter, but I would want it done correctly if it were my roof. -
I think ours was tested at around 4 or 5 bar. What pressure are you showing?

Hep2o and JG Speedfit are the two big names, some people favour Hep, others JG. Personally I have used quite a bit of JG and I have had no issues, I have never used Hep2o. The JG lay flat pipe is much better than the normal stuff and is worth paying a bit extra for.

Forgetting all of the insulation issues with your plan. 30cm screed above your pipes is not very thick, and if I remember correctly, there are not many products if any that can be used that thin on top of the UFH pipes. Also is it me or are your maths a bit off, you say that you will remove 6cm of screed, lay a 16mm pipe with 30mm screed on top - meaning the floor level will be 16mm higher? Minus 60 (after screed removed) + 16mm pipe + 30mm screed = Minus 14mm Our extension vaulted ceiling has 100mm pir between the rafters and 75mm under. The floor has 120mm pir, with Cemfloor screed over the UFH pipes at around 55mm thick, the temperature stays very stable for a long time. I spent a lot of time measuring the temperatures in our extension (3 UFH loops) to find the best place for the thermostat, and as @Declan52 has said, the heat will go up (its physics) and the vaulted areas will be warmer the higher up you go.

Can you post up a picture of the drawings you have? @Russell griffiths is correct about builders not having a clue about new stuff, a lot of the contractors we had on site were very stuck in their ways and wanted to do things their way.

Thanks guys We will be buying the tiles but we have not 100% chosen the floor tiles yet - One tile that we like is about £45 a tile and from Italy, they do seem very flat although its only a smallish sample and textured on the top so hard to tell. One problem I have found is that tile shops seem to be very secretive about the tiles and seem to rename them with their own reference, possibly to stop people finding them on other sites?

I was speaking to yet another tiler a few days ago to get a quote, he comes highly recommended and I have seen pictures of his work. I explained to the tiler that we will be using 1200 x 1200 large format tiles, he said no problem, I then asked if he used a tile levelling system, he replied that he had never used one for the last 15 years so why start now. His price is fair, he knew all the answers to the questions I asked, he recommended using a decoupling matt etc and also spoke about making his own expansion joint rather than pre bought as we need one due to the size of the area. We have asked him to tile one of the en-suites (floor and walls with a niche) before doing the main extension floor area of 82sqm so we will get a good idea of how good his work is. So my questions to everyone (but especially to @nod and @Nickfromwales as they seem to be the resident tile experts) are: 1 is it necessary to use a tile levelling system especially on 1200 x 1200 large format tiles? 2 does any one use a tile vibrator to level the tiles? he did not mention this but I have seen videos of people using them to bed the tile down so I am curious. 3 would you use a pre made expansion joint or make your own from trim and colour matched silicon? 4 how much if any lippage is acceptable? 5 are there any questions that I should be asking him. Thanks in advance

Can I attach joists to the top of a steel beam?
wozza replied to carlosdeanos's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
Yes. As @PeterW has suggested, fix the wall plate to the steel - then fix the joists to the wall plate. -
Vari light pro dimmer with 6 Aurora GU10 works very well for me Also a Lutron Pico remote dimmer and switch dims a Aurora MPRO1 and MPRO2 perfectly. Have you tried fitting a ballast to your circuit? Downlights.co.uk have plenty of test videos for various leds and dimmers - never purchased from them though.

Hi All, @nod @Nickfromwales and anyone else who has any experience of either Ditra and Durabase. Our tiler wants to use Durabase matting - should I insist on Ditra? or is it as good or better? Your thoughts, opinions and experiences are welcomed. Thanks, Wozza.

Moving loads of plumbing and plumbing in plastic...
wozza replied to Carrerahill's topic in General Plumbing
I have used loads of JG pipe and fittings - easy to use and the layflat pipe is much more flexible than the normal stuff. I like the cold form bends, they are great for tight bends. -
I am not sure if my chains move like that, its too dark to check, but I recently put some silicon grease on the hinges as they were stuttering and made clunking noises when opening - they are all ok now. I did have a problem with one of them struggling to open and close when newly fitted when it was set on silent mode - but its ok now - again I think that was due to lubrication. I have just had a look at the upgrade kit (manual to solar) that I have here waiting to be fitted to my utility Velux. The centre section pivots freely from the two boxes either side - so yours does seem to have a problem. I would take the cover off the wiring block (the little clip) and see if the wires are held tight stopping it from pivoting (the wires from the wiring block go into the middle part) - its the only thing that I can see that would create the problem you have. If I open the cover and hold the wires down it pretty much replicates the issue you have.

Cooker hood : Novy vs Bosch vs others
wozza replied to Nolita84's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
We had a Luxair - vented out. Very powerful, we had a spare grease filter so we could wash one whilst the other was in use. -
Hi and welcome. That looks like an old quarry tile that has been cut down. Do you have any better pics?

Lots of BMs, Wickes etc are purposely not displaying stock levels. I got a call from my local Jewsons on Monday to say they had had a delivery and had got 5 bags for me (max 5 bags per customer per week lol) when I collected late on Tuesday there were three and a half pallets in the back. Website has not shown any stock since before the Pandemic. I have been lucky / shopped around and travelled a bit to get my 48 bags over the past 4 weeks, I now have enough for my plasterer, and fingers crossed he will be finished this week.

A lot of the Wickes stores are getting 2 or 3 deliveries per week - a lot of them are not even updating the stock situation on the website. Wickes Stoke had a 500+ bag delivery yesterday - when the website displayed 97 bags left the store staff announced that there was none left - apart from the pallet in the back that had they had been told to keep for the Kitchen fitters. The large queue of people were not happy. A lot of the BMs are getting deliveries, once delivered it is going straight out to the big sites. I have been told that BG are having issues with packaging which is adding to the delays.

Internal glazed doors - Build.Reg? Confused...
wozza replied to Bored Shopper's topic in Doors & Door Frames
I think the lower part of the door needs to be safety glass - laminated or toughened - not sure on the height -
Local Wickes had a delivery today - it was a bit chaotic, managed to get 15 bags, quite a few people were very disappointed as they didnt get any.

Which is the best: System or Combi Boiler?
wozza replied to macmac's topic in Central Heating (Radiators)
I have a Combi and very good water pressure - if someone flushes the toilet, I get a small decrease in flow (which does not marr the showering experience) but no noticeable temperature variation at all. Shower is a Grohe 1000, Boiler is Vaillant Ecotec 831+ -
Wickes have been having Multi Finish deliveries all week - mostly to Scotland / up north or south coast / London I check it every few hours every day as I am desperate for 36 bags. The closest store that had stock today was about 35 miles away - I watched the stock deplete from over 200 bags to 5 in less than 30 mins.
