VHB tapes vs drilling porcelain
Construction Channel replied to Calvinmiddle's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
To answer your question, no i have never tried and TBH i doubt i would sleep too well if i had, Just for the sake of experiment though you could try the tape along with a "loose fixing" Just as a safety measure, also +1 to the wax filled core drills, I have always got on well with them as long as you remember to start with the edge, Obviously i buy mine from other places- 24 replies

Steel Fabrication and CE marking
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Steel Frame
without belittling the project i am struggling to see the complication, you have 2 steels sitting on top of a column with another column sitting on top of that??? I can't see where any structural welds would be. only to hold the plates in the right place. how well do you get on with your LBCO? I asked similar questions (about certified welds, not so much being CE marked) when i was looking into my steelwork, turns out not many people cared, as long as the steels being used had been specced by a SE, the actual fabrication and purchasing of the steel never got questioned, as I'm sure you know in the end i welded and cut all my steel myself and i have still not been asked where i purchased it from,- 29 replies

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n4dsl4ncdsztytx/AACcRLgTvBK7WFLLtygl7UhZa?dl=0 TYVM, It appears that option is only available if you access dropbox through a browser, for some reason it is just not there if i try it through the app.... hopefully the above link works

i thought they used to be .csv but the save file seems to be.numbers also do you know how to make it public on dropbox? these are the only options it is giving, (this is the free version lets not talk about google drive. I fell out with that a long time ago

please change .txt to the extension in the brackets. hopefully this works spindle machine (.numbers) .txt spindle machine (.xlsx) .txt

Firstly there doesn't seem to be a section for stairs..... unless i haven't looked hard enough?? secondly, how do I upload an excel/numbers file? i thought about Dropbox but it seems to need each person's email to allow access i just made this spreadsheet for a friend to try and prove a point, would someone be so kind as to check my workings, I wrote it in "numbers" apples version of excel, which annoyingly works in radians, It seems to be giving the correct answers but it is always best to put it to peer review before i start publishing things

Laminating a ridge board
Construction Channel replied to PeterW's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
cant see why not, you could probably get away with just winding a load of 250mm timberlocks through it but biscuits and glue would probably be better -
there are a lot of other females that have been here a long time and no one batted an eye, "Faye" makes one comment and we have to start pretending we are well behaved Dont worry, she lives with me.....the personification of an uncouth builder

That every time I drive home (so far) the barn is still standing and Faye is still there. It's been painfully slow but I can almost taste it being watertight.

Discount Offers of the Week
Construction Channel replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I went in on Monday for some milk, Just milk, I came out with 3 sets of Alan keys, some screwdriver bits, some pickle topped pork pies (very nice), an electric cool box, a crate of bottled water, a chocolate brioche loaf (also very nice), a desk bell, some round playing cards, a router and a pot of coffee. I had to stop at Tesco Express on the way back to get the milk that I forgot -

You don't know what you are missing. We only recently got a local Aldi and it really is an eye opener. It's almost as if they back the lorries into the store and just push it all out. Almost worth a special trip I would say. I can guarantee no matter what you go in for you will not come out with just that -
Reducing The Potential for Error
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Project & Site Management
Getting angry at physical objects rarely does anything, there does seem to be an issue somewhere so best thing is to try and find the root of the problem. which you are doing so kudos on staying calm. I am also a little shocked that the fitters just carried on regardless, especially with the doors, the windows will be fairly easy to get over so fair enough for fitting them but that door sill should have stopped work on that opening IMHO. have you put a level on the frame yourself recently? I'm hoping that the fitters have just got a dodgy level which should be a relatively easy fix. How long has the frame been up? it seems strange that this wasnt picked up earlier. Nothing is unfixable so lets just hope for the best. -
I could be wrong but i cant see why it would need an overhang unless it is trying to drip into a gutter, lap the wall below properly i cant see a problem, ill try to remember to take a picture of the flat roof on our current job tomorrow, but along the side it is pretty tight to the wall. (its a rubber roof but i cant see that would make a difference.)

Reducing The Potential for Error
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Project & Site Management
I don't blame him at all, unfortunately, its just the way it is, the frustrating part is (assuming the drawings were done on CAD) it is more than likely the architect already has all the dimensions on the drawing, they just decide to hide that layer when they print it the first time so they can charge a bit more. I did my own drawings on Sketchup and I reckon it would take me 5 mins max to add the dimensions to my drawings including starting up the computer, changing the ink in my printer and having a 4 min chat in the middle of it -
Reducing The Potential for Error
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Project & Site Management
Happens all the time. I can't remember the last time we actually built anything from the plan. It is bloody frustrating as the builder though. They are essentially saying " I'd rather not pay £1500 for the architect to un hide a layer on his cad drawing, so....... how about you do it for free and if I think I would have done it differently you can just change it. as above, put it on an UP TO DATE drawing and give them a copy. (note the emphasis on up to date), A3 would be ideal but a4 will be fine as long as you can still read everything, assuming you have a list/schedule from the manufacturers, copy as much info from that list onto your drawing as practical. as for writing on the walls, this might be helpful but you really must make sure this doesnt contradict anything on the drawing you have given them, having said all that, you really cant beat being on site to ask questions. how many windows of similar sizes have you got? or to be more precise how many potential mix ups have you got...... most of the time it is pretty obvious which window fits in which hole. -
probably not, but im sure it would be "good enough" plenty of foam Mr Malcolm probably had a finished bathroom

Socket and switch holes in plaster work
Construction Channel replied to Jimbouk's topic in Plastering & Rendering
the person fitting the boards cuts the holes. unless you are using plasterboard boxes, but if so make doubly sure the sparks knows this and has mapped where he/she has put the cables. (I realize you said the boxes are already in, but just for clarity) AFAIC @Alphonsox did it the standard way for metal back boxes. I also very much doubt the sparks left the boxes that far back that they could be boarded straight over.- 25 replies

Window order checking / comparing suppliers
Construction Channel replied to craig's topic in Windows & Glazing
@craig I am a mod and although i may be speaking out of turn i agree that your original post was made with the best of intentions. AFAIC you went about it the right way by declaring your professional/commercial interest, contributing to other threads and then creating what i consider a useful checklist for the general public, this is being discussed by the moderation team as we speak so this thread may well be edited back to something useful instead of the mess it has become but as @Barney12 said don't be disheartened. you haven't got any black marks yet Ed- 53 replies
