Water pipe and electricity cable in duct to carport/garage
ProDave replied to AliG's topic in General Plumbing
I will tell you a story about a new build not far from here. SSE came first and connected the power, making a road crossing and installing a bit of black ducting under the road probably about 75mm diameter. Next along came Scottish water, who fed their water pipe through the same black duct to save digging the road up. And you guessed it, when Open Reach came along, guess where the telephone cable went...... -
You would think commercial premises would be ideal candidates for solar PV. They operate mostly in the daytime so would be better placed to self use the PV generation than domestic users. One of the reasons I have heard for not doing so, is most don't own the premises, they rent or lease them. the landlord is not going to fund PV, it is of no benefit to him, and the tenant (business) is no more likely to fund it than a tenant in a rental house. And I bet the idiot DNO's make it difficult. they probably insist on expensive network upgrades even though it is clear most would be self used. And a 3.68kW PV system would not be of much use to the average supermarket.
-
Well it just gets exported. I export about 100kWh per year for no payment. Most of that is when the PV maxes out at mid day and generates a few hundred watts more than the immersion heater can sink.
-
Afraid so. You need an MCS install to claim any sort of export payment.
-
It is not JUST the ASHP that uses electricity. ANYTHING consuming electricity in your house will use at least some of the PV. If you are talking of a normal sized array with a 3.68kW inverter it is pretty easy to self use almost all you generate. I am certainly self using 95% just by switching use of the big appliances to the middle of the day and diverting excess PV to the immersion heater. However Octopus do seem to be offering a tariff now that actually pays a decent rate for export, not the insulting rate of 5p per kWh so that may change the equation.
-
300L tank but only heated to 48 degrees by the ASHP. In summer it gets topped up by surplus PV into the immersion heater, so a lot less needed from the ASHP in summer.

About 12kWh per day all electric. Less than 2kWh of that is the heat pump heating hot water (heating is off) so average of 10kWh of "stuff" being used per day. That is the bit I am struggling to reduce but not managing. In winter the "other stuff" usage goes up a bit, partly due to lighting but probably mostly due to less solar PV helping with it. It just goes to show that heating is a small part of our total energy usage.

Christ, how much have they worn? I doubt you will need more than one surely?

All I will add is do not use the Baumit.com silicon render, you won't get any help from the supplier if it fails. Choose a different brand and ask them about customer service before buying.

When I lived with my parents when younger, DOUBLE yellow lines did not stop people parking across the dropped curb blocking me in our out. Plod would not do anything to move the cars, just give them a parking ticket. The issue in that case was people parking in a hurry to get a bus to London for the day.

Get the electrician to install the mini CU, site sockets and TT earth and leave the meter tails ready to connect to the CU. Then there will be no questions and it will all be running when the meter arrives.

If we were to get a second service, then game boy would have to pay for one of them in it's entirity. No way will I finance two internet connections to the house. -
If it is just for storage, 2.5mm 3 core steel wire armoured that can be buried direct, but in duct would allow you to change it for a different cable if needs change.

Yes common for me to unscrew a switch or socket in a house in winter to be greeted with icy cold air coming out of the box. As a start, find everywhere cables go from the loft down into any wall and seal the holes. but that is unlikely to be the only place the cold air is getting in. If you have a suspended floor, you will find the same with cables going down under the ground floor. Ditto for pipes and stack pipes in particular will likely run in great big non sealed boxed in compartments.

Alternative broadband supplier questions

If only they would. We are such a low density rural settlement that it is not financially viable. I got my hopes up a couple of years back when EE installed a new mast close to us, quite possibly line of sight if there were not trees in the way and less than 2 miles away. I had hoped it would have given us a super strong 4G signal. But my daughters phone is with EE and the signal is poor and so is the speed. At some point something has to happen with the O2 2G signal, but O2 have indicated they will be one of the last to shut down 2G not for perhaps another 10 years, so the hope of that being upgraded any time soon is not great either. -

Keeping a passive house cool

Our secret weapon is a row of trees on the south of the plot. Conveniently they grow leaves in summer and shade most of the garden and a lot of the windows. In winter they fall off and let the sun into the house.- 30 replies

Alternative broadband supplier questions
ProDave replied to ProDave's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
Nothing yet has given me good reason to switch, I just fear the bloody x box would still suck up all the bandwidth. I wish there was a published schedule of when / if BT/OR are going to provide a fibre service here. If that was soon, I would wait, if that was never, I would switch. Not knowing is not helping the decision. -

Yes it is sounding like the Xbox would just use up the 40MBPS or whatever so the faster BB would not "solve" the issue. It would probably just mean he could download more games.
