To be fair, I have an engineering degree but I’m a terrible engineer. It doesn’t mean much nowadays. I’m just thankful I can be a professional gatekeeper. ”Thou shall not pass!”

None of that has ever worked for me. You start out with an acceptable price and then they **** off when they’ve ****ed it up. now I have no choice but to drive a shit heap and dress in tramp’s cast offs.

This may help others in the same situation but my TV came with an integrated shelf for storing remotes and streaming box...

I though that ovens were just ovens but the difference between living with a new cheap oven or an old retarded oven compared to using a modern, multi-programmed, decent brand electric oven has been a complete revelation. In future it would not be something I would cut corners on. JMTPW. (Neff S&H without the expensive cleaning cycle but with the mid range touch controls, small LED not dials - I suspect that neither the Neff or the S&H has a massive bearing and a comparable brand with a conventional door is likely to be just as good from a cooking perspective.)

Leave the window in position, just use the rips, no one will notice and every time you notice, tell yourself that only a fool would refit a window to solve that.

I think this is mostly bang out of order. Fair enough to suggest they built a cob house out of unicorn phlegm and fairy belly button fluff instead but to criticise their parenting and life choices? When all they’re trying to do is the best for their family in line with what would be considered mainstream best advice? For a start, if you required frequent medical care and potentially urgent medical treatment, the last place you’d choose to live is the countryside, 40 miles from the nearest hospital only to find the immunologist (or whomever) was shit.

Financing Self Build In Parents Garden
daiking replied to Johnny Jekyll's topic in Self Build Mortgages
I disagree, they're enjoyable for both spectators and participants. However they should be in a more general forum area, not derailing a specific query by another member. It does highlight how different generational outlooks will lead to different advice over this question. I can only proffer that it is less than advisable to live in your renovation/extension and expect a normal family life Surprised no has mentioned to sell the flat and live in a caravan on site. -
Financing Self Build In Parents Garden
daiking replied to Johnny Jekyll's topic in Self Build Mortgages
He's building in his parent's garden in Surrey with a £300k build budget. I expect 'quotes' to be padded out to include £400-500+ day rates. It all makes sense when someone comes round to quote for a job and says "Your house is worth X so you'll be spending 10% of that on Y", whether the job demands it or not. It doesn't tell you about that in the HBB or SPONS, does it? -

Coming back to this, if I just want to anonymously vent my spleen (NOT in a way that will get me arrested), not convey any sort of useful information, I should just sign up to Wordpress?

I demolished your house, but I'm not moving the debris!
daiking replied to laurenco's topic in Demolition
Quite simply, most clients are idiots and most contractors are c**ks. The constant forum retorts for numerous different issues regarding “If it’s not written down...” are a self fulfilling chant to justify the existence of this community. what does @laurenco need to do now? Re-engage the same company to bring their machines back to load up the waste for disposal? Extra unnecessary cost on top of the disposal or pay someone else to do the some wasteful operation when it should have been done all together with some sort of economy of scale or without duplicating effort?- 192 replies

One for the likes of @JSHarris or @SteamyTea (long time no see). I’m trying to repair a kids pool inflatable. There is a small patch but typically the hole is on a seam so I think it needs some glue and the patch. If I were at home I’d get a vinyl hot tub repair kit and give it a go. as I am in Timbuktu, metaphorically, I have got my hands on a bicycle puncture repair kit. Is this cement also suitable for a vinyl inflatable?

I demolished your house, but I'm not moving the debris!
daiking replied to laurenco's topic in Demolition
Posters are constantly shamed with you should have done this, you should have done that. If I have 40 tons of broken house to get rid of, who do you think would be more likely to know how to dispose of it cheaply and quickly? Me, mr never-built-a-house-before or them, mr (un)professional demolition contractor? To not even broach the subject of what are you going to do with the crap once he’s knocked the house over? Its either unprofessional bad form or someone trying to get away with overcharging for part of a job and they know there’s a extra cost coming that the client is oblivious to. Which is it?- 192 replies

There’s a lot of victim shaming on BH. These c**ks are supposed to know what they’re doing. Self builders, householders and laymen clearly don’t so the onus should be on the c**ks being paid to clearly communicate what is and isn’t covered. JMTPW.- 192 replies
