  1. I want to get a slotted basin waste to match my vado brushed nickel basin taps. The only option appears to be this: https://www.vado.com/individual-ind-395-brn According to the video on that page, this will work just as a slotted waste, which is important to me because it's a kids bathrooms so needs to deal with a situation where they leave the tap running. Will this definitely act like a slotted waste? Or does it depend on the sink?
  2. Has anybody used one of these Geberit combined waste/ overflow system? We have two of these and not sure whether to use them or not. The problem is the sink does not have an overflow unless this system is used but I do not really want a pull up lever on the taps. I think you can get a separate rotating knob but have not managed to source one yet. The only other option is not to use this and just put in a pop up waste and hope nobody leaves the tap running. Any ideas of what people have done would be very much appreciated. TIA
  3. I have two orange waste pipes sticking out of the slab for the en-suite bathrooms. I have to put a solvent 110mm boss connector https://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-sp583g-short-boss-pipe-grey-110mm/17138?tc=HB7&ds_kid=92700048793290397&ds_rl=1249404&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIt-WllOfz5wIVmK3tCh2 onto each pipe and was supposed to use gap filling cement but as per the thread title used normal solvent on one pipe (not concentrating) and gap filling cement on another. So my question is will it matter as both pipes seem to have adhered but I cannot test the joint as the drains are not finished, have no access to outside at the moment as I could fill the pipe up with water. I still have access to inside the pipe so could perhaps do something to the inside if it is deemed that the wrong solvent has been used. This joint will be inside a tiled wall when finished so need to get this right, may be stop daydreaming when doing important jobs!!TIA
  4. We are busy with Mum and Dad's new wetroom extension and the builders are getting the roof on so we planning the internal fit out. The floor is concrete, insulation then a screed which the builder assures me will have the correct falls for me to tile. No need for a former or shower tray. and he is quite a perfectionist so I am sure it will be fine. (He took down the rafters and re-fit them as one side was 1cm out from the other!) anyway - we are looking to fit a square drain such as this one - the OH, who will be fittng it, was asking about the need for a U-bend? There isnt going to be room for one. Is that okay? the concrete has been laid for the floor with a largish brown pipe in place for the waste and Fred, who did the foundations, said the drain fits into the insulation layer and the screed is laid around it. does that all sound correct? Here is the build a couple of weeks ago. the corner pipe nearest the camera is the shower drain location.
  5. Houston ...we have a ... (well you know what we have) Basically the engineer working for Anglian water came out today and checked the falls. (If you know already ..i wont bore you ...but we are running all the services through our inlaws house to the road in front of their house as the road we have an entrance on the services are "unadopted" ....long story .....but) ...anyway. Due to the distance of around 45m from main sewer to our invert ...we have to fall TOO far.. ...and it would be a smidge under 2m deep along the house which is too close for comfort ...without underpinning which is financially a non starter ..so someone suggested a pump ...! ...sounds good ... But of course we are ALSO picking up our inlaws waste when we run out to the mains sewer ...as that was part of the deal (they are currently on an old and dilapidated rear garden cesspit) So my question (which even the waste company couldn't answer) is ... Will my pump a the proposed location effectively SHOVE the waste out to the sewer when it HAS to pass through our inlaws manhole as well ? any Pump Gurus online ? see attached for a handy pic
  6. Week one of this build, and the demolition guys are already driving me insane! ? The brick-debate ensues... and now broken slabs of concrete are in the mix (quite literally). Whilst they removed the metal (to weigh in), the windows and most of the timber of our former bungalow, we're left with landfill sized mounds of a broken up concrete slab (which we've lifted in order to lay another concrete slab ?) and the demo guys have said they never priced to remove this from site. They priced to demolish, level and site scrape. But not to remove the mountain of bricks and concrete which may or may not have all sorts of old brass chandeliers glinting in the sunlight. What is typical lovely self-builders? Should the demo price include removing the building rubble from site?
  7. We've demolished our bungalow in order to build a new house. As the garden is large and slopes off away from the house, we want to use the broken bricks and smashed concrete to fill it in. As part of this, we want a totally flat area for our kids to play football on. Our demolition contractor says we don't need to crush the bricks before putting them in the garden. Will this work? Or is he just trying to save labour here and fob us off?
  8. It’s one way: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-44055845 (Thought to be a misdelivery by the Beeboids and the police. Not totally convinced, myself - though it should have some monetary value and could have been sold possibly.) Ferdinand
  9. Can someone advise what the placement of the waste pipes for toilets should be. Mine are concreted into the subfloor rising vertically for toilets to be attached. Toilets will back onto walls so what distance from the wall should the waste pipe be. Suspect that 2 of mine are too far out based on prospective plumbers comments, he didn't offer up a solution. Not sure I fancy having to dig concrete subfloor up to adjust/join pipework.
  10. Good Afternoon All Well its time to finalise my drawing and sewage and services layout. As some of you know (due to location) ...I am actually bringing ALL my connections past our parents house (on the edge of their land) In return for letting us, we are connecting them to the main sewer with our build half the houses here are still "on the pits" ..including theirs Now I have tried to measure everything in 10cm / 100mm blocks and got the drawing below. Obviously this is the "busiest" part as this is between our parents and next door and it is where they will connect to our sewage via a 450mm manhole (which is that box in the middle Looking at the below and bearing in mind that T=Telecom. E=Electric G=Gas and W=Water and of course WW = Waste water (sewage) Will i be safe using this as a cross section for the Building regs ?
  11. Following a comment from @Nickfromwales about once being asked by a QS to fill stud voids with plasterboard offcuts to reduce waste disposal costs, thought it would be interesting to discuss the pros and cons of doing so. What are everyone's thoughts? I can see the rationale for doing this on cost grounds, and the possible sound deadening benefits if using whole pieces well fitted into the void.
  12. I thought this might be a useful thread to have around for the same question on different things.
  13. Are there any alternative uses for PIR rigid foam? I got way more than this photo shows and don't really want to land fill it. Other than jamming it in little gaps as a secondary insulation I'm at a lost what to do with it. Is it fire-proof? Is it heat proof? Can I carve it and cover in clay ? Can I use it for moulds? Does hot glue stick to it or melt it? Does it give off fumes when hot/burning? Is it petrol resistance? Can I use it for polishing? Can I grind it up and use it to fill small gaps? Can I mix it into cement?
  14. Can I ask what is the minimum drop for drains? We are looking to move our bathroom upstairs and the easiest option is to drop the waste from the new loo, down through the lounge corner into the cellar, across into the old waste pipe where it exits the house and runs into a drain outside. But it is a fair distance in the cellar, approcimately 4m then a 90o bend and another 8m. What would be the minimum drop and whats the best way of measuring it? Do I need to buy a laser level?
