Am I being too sensitive or should I be concerned.
Barney12 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Surveyors & Architects
I'll throw my 2p's worth in.......... What always fascinates me about these issues is that Architects (along with a good number of other professional services) have one real problem; PERCEPTION. The simple fact is that there are plenty of people who are prepared to write about bad experiences with Architects. Of course what we dont know is how many are delighted because of course it is our nature not to shout about the good things. So who's fault is it? Well I find it interesting to look at the professional body, in this case RIBA. Would the "common man' consider them; friendly, welcoming, helpful? Is their website packed with great advise and examples of building projects for "the average person"? In my view: NO. In fact if you go to the website the first item in the menu is "awards". Oh and gosh isn't their a lot of them! They should rename the section "Willy Waiving". Of course promotion of the skill of your members is good but have they got the balance right? Could they do ALOT more to promote understanding (including the issues you will face and how its a complex science) of their field to those outside the hallowed esteem of the "club"? YES. I'll end were I begun; this issue is not unique to Architects! There are many professional services that suffer from the same "willy waiving" "elitist" attitude and so often that is driven from their professional body. Oh and my RIBA Architect thus far has been excellent. ............I'll get my coat! -
Looks identical to the eBay ones and the one I've got.

Yep. Thats the one I have too. Works brilliantly and tilts for vaulted too. I find the 12mm stuff heavy so the 15mm must be a right bar steward to lift and fix!

Yep. It definitely looks shit!

Thanks guys. I'll go hang off it

Hi All Really hoping for some collective advice! Like a fool I offered to look at a friends outside light as it (and I quote) "doesn't work". So of course the first thing I want to check is the bulb. But..........I can't even work out how to get the cover off I would have thought it unscrewed but it just spins round (in either direction). I don't want to rip it off and break it! any pearls of wisdom out there? Pictures of said offending light:

Love that glass wall. Is it just a custom cut sheet of toughened glass with colour behind or something special?

Came across this and I have to say it looks interesting and a good solution for hiding the clutter of face plates etc: http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/av-distribution/video-installing-a-flush-av-backbox-with-syncbox.html Not cheap though

You lost me at KitKat.... .........Mmmmmm KitKat 4 Finger only though please, none of this chunky crap. I am purist.

There is a difference between "grab" and "slip" (in simple terms). and the "stick" bit relies on "air" (which isn't in the tube).

Actually I dont mean to worry you @SteamyTea but NHS cutbacks mean that they've commissioned @Onoff to build you a new scanner. Rumour has it that there is a new BuildHub MEGA build thread coming soon as he's just finished the drawings.......

I know I know, stop it. they were and then of course the crappy bloody wall plugs lost a bit of tension in the equallly crappy plasterboard so I had to "winch em up a bit". 'Twas a sad sad day V2 will have secret fixings so no screws on display and some other modifications. Mind you by the time I get round to making it they will have developed truly wireless charging or you'll just get Alexa saying...... "Barney, I've noticed your phone is at 50%, I'm charging it for you now"
-
Yep don't get USB sockets in mains plugs. Way too much risk of outdated tech. I made an "iShelf". The cables disappear into a cupboard that houses a multipoint USB power bank. The only annoying thing is I should have made it from Apple not Oak

Online kitchen design/costing tools?
Barney12 replied to Crofter's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
A few I've got in my bookmarks http://www.magnet.co.uk/design-your-kitchen/kitchen-planner/ http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/static/room-planner http://www.easyplanner3d.com/ But by far the best is the ikea one. -
As @MrP says above one option is roll your own. If you've got a B&Q with a timber cut station then they will machine 8x4 sheets down to strips. Then it's just a case of running a router along one edge, very simple. The one disadvantage is lengths; you'll be restricted to 2400mm a length. No problem to join but added work for your chippy. Also don't underestimate the amount of work in painting hand rolled mdf. All cut edges will need sealing, sanding and priming and sanding again to create a smooth profile. Easy to do but time consuming Another option is just to get somethig machined to your requirements. Just google "custom mouldings" there are dozens of companies to choose from. MDF is often maligned as a material but if you're looking for a painted finish I personally think it can't be beaten. Easy to fit, no knots, no shrinkage. Perhaps the only draw back is it REALLY doesn't like water, it soaks it up like a sponge

MBC have told me that they will deliver a water tight structure once the windows/doors are in and of course to the specified air changes per hour (0.54 iirc) in terms of airtightness. So water coming in and your comment that. "You will patch rips" seems at odds here. I guess they've not finished yet?
