I agree. They have a habit of being rather "clunky" and "laggy". 360 ceiling mounted probably offer the best solution for personal lighting as they have a good field of detection throughout the room. Youll also need lux control otherwise your lights are going to come in in the daytime when you don't need them. Dont forget that you then have the added issue of "on time". What will trigger the "off"? Unless you've got some form of intelligent lighting system where the "state" is known by various inputs you're pretty much restricted to a timer. I promise you whatever time you choose will be wrong a lot of the time! Life is just not that defined. I remember putting a pir in our downstairs loo years ago to control the light. It worked great until you went for a "long dump" you ended up having to wave your arms around to get the bloody thing to trigger again!

Protecting Doors and Thresholds
Barney12 replied to worldwidewebs's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I don't believe their is a simple robust solution. Corex sheet is relatively strong and you can cut it to form custom covers to protect everything as best as possible, Try to avoid adhesive tapes directly onto the outer surfaces of the timber of powder coat. They will damage the surface over time. Probably the the biggest thing is trying to keep things clean. Grit and dirt is incredibly abrasive and will ruin your finished surfaces. Clean thresholds etc daily if at all possible. Oh oh and eyes like a hawk to stop trades trashing things. -
Who knows. Our planning process has been a comedic farce! I would laugh if it was funny

Well today we finally received our grant for the non-material amendment. The letter confirms: "Amendment to siting of roof-lights, front entrance detail and addition of patent glazing" which is absolutely fantastic. WELL IT BLOODY WOULD BE IF THAT WAS WHAT WE HAD APPLIED FOR! It has absolutely no bearing on our application at all. They've clearly mixed up two applications. The only thing that's correct on the letter is my name address and original planning application number. You could not make it up

@ProDave the documentation talks about "programming via SD Card". I would be really interested to know what the software app looks like? There really cant be that many parameters? @Stones were you furnished with the programming software when you bought from the trade co you linked to? -
Yes. you'll enjoy this paragraph in their email then: We will continue to run the business using the existing GB Energy systems supported by enhanced technology, as well as experienced former GB Energy employees and service providers, to minimise the disruption to you and to our Co-operative Energy customers.
-
Theyve not asked for an extension. They're just effectively saying "tough". The problem is we've got another full application going in after this ammendement (which is related to solar PV, another long story) and I'm worried about kicking up a stink and then digging their heals in.
-
Co-op Energy have been awarded the GB Energy contracts by OfGen. I've had an email today.
-
Another 12 days have passed and our non material ammendement is still in the system. We're well over two months now compared to the supposed 28 days. This week they said "We've got it, we're processing it but we're giving no guarantees as to when it will be completed. We have limited administrative resource" They are unaccountable and appear to not give a crap about the supposed timescales. We just sit and wait. Could be days, could be weeks.

From the limited research I have done this is exactly the case. RHI simply puts money in the installers pocket! There (again from my research) is an unbelievable arrogance from these RHI installers. Snake Oil, Inflated Pricing and Distain towards people with a bit of knowledge all seem to come as standard! I guess they're never going to like a Self Builder who is well informed!! Just as bad as MCS accredited solar installs. -

Was it the packaged Ecodan product as described here: https://heating.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/Products/Pages/Monobloc_Packaged_Cylinder.aspx Of all the reading I've done it ticks the most boxes for me. -
House of the year inspiring or what!
Barney12 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Property TV Programmes
I've done this in the last couple of places we did. It's one of the great things about having automated lighting. In the barn conversion we went one step further and integrated the alarm with the lighting. There was a "bedtime" button which set the ground floor PIR's active and the lights off. We also had the lights pulse on and off if the alarm was triggered. -

Simples! Because you don't use them you just look at them!! -
Our's would have to penetrate our metal seam roof (zink, or possibly ColourCoat Urban IF I can get the park to agree) so I'm also equally reluctant. It would be incredibly simple for me to vent the system on the run down to the septic tank. Looks like I'll have to see what the BCO says when we get there.
-
Does anyone know if having your own septic tank changes the situation at all? It strikes me that by its nature its fairly well ventilated anyway!
-
Interesting views. The end of our run is actually the garage, which has the flat above. Ironically no AAV and no external vent. At the time of building it the old house was still there but that also had no external vent or AAV. The BCO never queried the lack of vent or AAV when we built it. Everything runs into our own sceptic tank (which we think dates from the 1950's) and works exceedingly well.

GB Energy. My switch goes live on 1st December. So my money I'll be sat with them and I will have switched, timing couldn't be worse
-
Bugger. They've got £350 of my money. i actually switched away from them a couple of weeks ago and only got the confirmation of switch today and thought "right better get my credit balance back" i understand it's protected but something tells me it won't be a quick or painless process!
