Cheap sturdy vacuum cleaner for DIY cleanup

Henry even stands up to commercial cleaning -
Thrust bearings at each point wouldn’t make any difference and only one point will ever really carry the vertical load. Bigger hinges have more or larger leaves to carry rotational (moment) loads rather than the vertical load

Raised Patio & Building Control/Safety

I’m afraid it’s railings, wall or balustrade.. or earth bank/slope to reduce drop to less than 300mm (pretty sure it’s 300)- 18 replies

Gravel and/or weed membrane SIPS garden office on ground screws
markc replied to tomdc's topic in Garages & Workshops
Look under just about any deck area and you won’t see weeds or grasses growing, only where there is plenty of light. As your shed will be close to the ground you will only get stuff around the edges where it’s easy to spray or pull out -
Where is the kWh price heading in 2022?
markc replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
HS2 is a money pit and was intended to keep us on par with Europe to make a Europe wide high speed rail web. Italy moaned about it, but got on with the build (no protestors adding billions to the costs) and it’s now a fantastic system to use. -
Are you thinking of fire curtains or high level smoke curtains? High and vaulted roof spaces can really benefit from smoke curtains to reduce the spread at high level and are fitted in a lot of big open spaces. The fire curtains I have seen were really flexible roller doors and the head boxes and wall tracks looked like industrial doors.

Standing Seam Repair in North East Scotland
markc replied to Ralph's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Hardest part is getting under the cap to open it up, the hand tool and machine have a ‘blade’ rather like a plough that goes under the edge and then forces the cap open as it moves along. A bit of plastic or something like car body trim removal tools could be fashioned to do the job without marking. Re crimping can be done with a soft mallet and support block to tap against -
Almost impossible to determine the quality or longevity by price or manufacturer, we got a machine approved with very expensive led lights made in Germany (made by Diana I think ) that often fill with water and don’t last long at all. We now use cheap (less than one tenth the cost of the other lights and they are bullet proof.

Large rocks/boulders? More natural looking than gabion but still able to hold the ground back, 2.5m height difference needs something substantial if you take the rooted vegetation away

Standing Seam Repair in North East Scotland
markc replied to Ralph's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Changing individual panels is very doable but unless you are at the right end or running off to the end then you will always have one cover seam that needs to be opened up and then re crimped (or zipped) and it will have ripples in it. So to installers it’s a lot of faff and potential disputes afterwards so they shy away from repairs -
Yup! So much easier when things fail mechanically

Do I ask the builders to redo the roof?
markc replied to lauren87's topic in Skylights & Roof Windows
When you say just had this done, it looks to be painted already. Was it plastered or is this just paint over plasterboards? Either way it could have been flatter but this could also be due to painting before everything has dried. Let it dry thoroughly and a bit of sanding will make a massive difference. the skylight reveal does look out of square and can be checked easily, camera angles can be deceiving -
Loss of functionality in 2 way or 3 way circuits is usually down to a loose connection (rare a conductor just breaks) on one of the link wires. Carefully pull the switch fronts away and there is a good chance the offending wire will pull out of the loose connection

The difference in ‘strength’ isn’t as easy as double etc. you need to look at the loads being imposed. Strength And Properties Classifications C16 C24 Tension parallel to grain (N/mm2) 3.2 4.5 Bending parallel to grain (N/mm2) 5.3 7.5 Compression parallel to grain (N/mm2) 1.8 7.9 Compression perpendicular to the grain (N/mm2) 2.2-1.7 2.4-1.9 Shear parallel to grain (N/mm2) 0.67 0.71 Modulus of elasticity mean (N/mm2) 8,800 10,800 Modulus of elasticity minimum (N/mm2) 5,800 7,200 Characteristic density (kg/m5) 310 350 Average density (kg/m5) 370 420

As @Canski suggested, slot a longer lintel in under the existing and you can then take out the return section to give full width. Looks like it may be butt jointed anyway so likely to come out easily
-
What’s the width of the fireplace further back? Looks like the opening has been reduced. If this isn’t wide enough then your options are limited or going to get very expensive.

As above and wool or foam are good for gap filling. Boarding over is easier than intumescent paint … unless you are making the steels a feature of course.

Door linings to be painted white (mdf or solid wood)
markc replied to Moonshine's topic in Doors & Door Frames
MDF or solid wood is often a dilemma. In area that will be mopped or likely to be damp/wet then solid wood (MDF can and is used but it needs fully sealing on all sides before install). In non wet areas then MDF is fine, no one goes around tapping skirts and arch’s like they do doors and furniture. -
VAT on Polish imports?
markc replied to KTB's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
Vat is a tax on consumption, anything exported does not attract VAT. No reason for any organisation to charge VAT as long as the goods are transported by courier or haulage company etc. as that is sufficient proof it will not be ‘consumed’ locally. if you were to buy and collect yourself then you would pay VAT but be able to claim back when the goods cross the border. -
No difference putting door in on joists or concrete … apart from concrete is a little more difficult fixing to.

New log burner install-Cowl at chimney pot fixing !!
markc replied to Marcset's topic in Introduce Yourself
That looks like a good job. The legs will be inside the pot and they have gone to the trouble of sealing around between the pot and the liner to stop water getting down… not many installers bother doing that. bird guard could have been offered but birds don’t seem to like going down liners and if you are going to use the stove then the birds will stay away.
