I've got 3 running to the gates - master for the intercom, a second for an IP camera if I fit it, and the third for a potential sensor for the post box if that ends up in the wall.

Thanks @Nickfromwales I was only thinking 2 just in case I wanted to run a spur off but tbh I think it will be fine. Not it sure about those USB ones yet - haven't found one I like that doesn't look dodgy ....

I'm looking at first fix wiring at the moment and three of the walls that will have sockets on are external existing walls that are being lined with 25mm Kooltherm prior to being boarded. I've managed so far to keep the sockets on either internal walls or stud walls to keep chasing out to a minimum. I'd considered using battens to hold the board and run a couple where the sockets are so that there is a defined "run" to the back boxes however I'm now considering using a 25mm duct to the back boxes (it's as cheap as batten..!) and adding two for the doubles; this would then be foamed into place and cut flush to hold it in. Questions are : - does this count as "insulation" and does it de-rate the circuits..? - are 35mm back boxes deep enough for decent double sockets...? - is it really worth doing this and would I be creating work for myself ..?? Thoughts please ..!

Thanks. Ironically the fibre joint unit is opposite the end of the drive but they would need a 35m duct into the house to do that and the preference is the pole on the opposite side of the road to the side of the house - it would be a 6m catenary connection to the gable end which is fine with me. We will "only" get 76mb which is fine by me although I currently get over 150mb from Virgin who happen to have a nice cabinet in my verge .....

Bonding Fibreglass to PVC Pipe

A dent makes the water flow to the centre - makes a dip that draws the last of the water in. Bit of copper pipe and a sharp tap with a hammer will sort it.- 76 replies

I was thinking about running 25mm black duct for him to run the cable in, and then terminating it at a closed round box or similar at either end. I do want to drill the wall where it goes though - the one monkey I'm not looking forward to is the Sky engineer .......
-
@JSHarris out of curiosity what ducting did you use ..?? I'm considering that I could get a duct to my comms room relatively easily from the external wall so BT would just need to pull his cable through.

Bonding Fibreglass to PVC Pipe

A tattooed angry monkey with dodgy facial hair .........?? Sounds like you're nearly there... @Barney12 that outlet seems very flat at the edge - you may want to just dink the middle with something round like bit of copper pipe to get the water to flow down the centre and stop it pooling at the bottom. Only needs 2-3mm and you won't notice it from the ground anyway.- 76 replies

I think you'll find it was my idea and this is a public forum so it's out there anyway pieboy..! I was thinking the same though - nice to sit and watch it ..! @Barney12 are there many trees that could potentially dump leaves onto it ..? Or is it pretty exposed up there ..??- 76 replies

Neat idea @JSHarris..! I have a PoE switch that will go with the current network and I hadn't thought about powering the modem from that. Have you just used a standard 5v/12v DC buck at the modem end ..? I'm not even considering a phone line at this point either - I have a Sipgate local number already and will most likely go to fibre with a commercial broadband provider such as XLN Telecom. I think the days of landlines are numbered, pardon the pun, as most people have mobile phones anyway. I have a company provided PicoCell from O2 due to us having a none existent signal at the current house so that will move (even though we get a pretty decent O2 signal at the new one ..!) so my mobile works wherever I am in the house.

BT will run to your master socket - beware that this can sometimes mean they terminate at a point and you need to put the ADSL filters at every location past that point. I think @Bitpipe had a similar issue and resolved it quite neatly.

Which look do you like ..? Internal or external frame in Oak..? If its external then you can get away with wide boards or similar. Internally you can use green oak sleepers as faux posts but using anything as a beam usually needs to be pretty hefty just to get the spans. How about a compromise with a "standard" house and an oak framed "extension" to it ..?

@Temp just be careful as that is from 2011 and the rules changed in 2013. Face value vouchers are treated differently to other types of retailer vouchers - the source is the problem. I've asked a friend who is a tax consultant to see if he knows the answer.

It's nothing to do with names, it's when the transaction is recognised for VAT purposes. A retailer selling their own gift vouchers can treat them as exempt from VAT until the point of redemption as they are in effect a prepayment in accounting terms - up until they are actually assigned to a sales transaction they do not attract the appropriate VAT element. These intermediaries who sell the voucher at less than face value are deemed to be entering into a transaction with both the supplier (in this case B&Q who provide the cards) and the end purchaser. There are therefore appropriate elements of input and output tax to be considered. What the card issuer may well be doing is reassigning VAT to the correct accounts when they are recognising the gift card revenue however the thing perplexing me is how can they differentiate between the types of gift card ..?? This probably needs HMRC advice ..!

Unfortunately its not that clear as the VAT rules depend on the type of card it is. Lebara vs HMRC is the case law on this and its a joy... Even the UKGCVA guidance isn't clear - they just use a replay of the VAT notice that I posted previously. There is a legal requirement however for a retailer to produce a VAT invoice on demand - this is where the sticking point is I think for the Wickes/B&Q retailers is I expect

Leaking shower - my fault or the design?
PeterW replied to TheMitchells's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Sealant should go on the outside - any water that gets into the frame will then exit via the inside as it can't go anywhere else. -
@Nickfromwales did you say it was White CT1 that discolours..??

Credit/Debit Reward Cards, Discounts etc
PeterW replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
This is a lovely complex situation for which HMRC have a fact sheet. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vat-notice-7007-business-promotions/vat-notice-7007-business-promotions#face-value-vouchers The difference depends on whether it is a generic or a retailer voucher, and the process by which the voucher is obtained. If it is a retailer card purchased direct from the retailer then the VAT is not accounted for until the retailer transaction takes place i.e. B&Q sell you a B&Q voucher, they do not treat it as a VAT sale until redeemed; if its a third party retailer then it is a grey area as you may have already paid VAT and B&Q may have already accounted for the VAT at point of selling the card to the intermediary. (Lebara vs HMRC is the case law) I'm not sure what would happen though if you bought a B&Q gift card (at full value) with a discounted Gift Card..... that is a real VAT nightmare !- 151 replies

A WC is an extracted room for MVHR so whilst it may get a bit warm it should be fine. You could go via your cloakroom on that picture - is that where the manifold is ..? This was mine - got as close as I could using the stick on pipe rails. I've got some spare if you want them ..?
