Manifold system versus hot return system
Onoff replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Plumbing
Says here it a "plastic body...for bronze model". Comes across that it's a valid substitite, as in plastic won't rust etc? Goes on "Can be used for open circuit / potable". https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WILO-25-6-1-Plastic-Body-Secondary-Hot-Water-Circulating-Pump-for-Bronze-Model-/292505594621 -
That'll be magic hole filler or new joists then! ?
-
Who specified the drilling of the joists for all those pipes and wires? They're supposed to be within 0.25 - 0.4 of the span. https://www.voltimum.co.uk/articles/cutting-holes-and-notches-solid-timber

Are the edges butt tight to the "walls" or whatever is at the edges, could it be rubbing there?

Dead (no power) testing should identify your fault, honestly. Stand by for a pm. -

Not if all disconnected! Shouldn't get continuity between N & E. Have you disconnected both ends of the ring? As in you have 6 wires (x2 live, x2 neutral and x2 earth) loose and staring at you? -

Any use? You can buy a no name insulation resistance meter, "IR tester" for sub £30 on Amazon etc. -

I've heard to smear the brackets with silicone grease. -
My Geberit wall drain said 1 - 2%. With my wet room corner that equated to I think 14 - 28mm. I ended up at about 20mm so circa 1.5% and it drains a treat. I was worried that you would feel the slope when you walked across it. You don't. With hindsight I'd have gone 2%.

Replacement of felt during loft conversion
Onoff replied to DIYmadDAD's topic in Building Regulations
If you're replacing more than 25% of the roof covering haven't you got to "upgrade" the roof in terms of insulation anyway and thus the felt very likely?- 8 replies

underfloor heating Underfloor heating installation opinions on work quality
Onoff replied to Pbb's topic in Introduce Yourself
Nobody is suggesting it won't heat up. Just that it would likely heat up quicker and retain more heat, as well as using less fuel if there was more insulation in the floor. Underfoot I'm sure it feels lovely. Similarly your "boiler" might last longer if it's working less.- 26 replies

BS1557 was withdrawn in 1954! ?
-
Seemingly the stuff above is polythene inslated cable with a pvc sheath to BS1557. So 3-cores, red, white & blue, no earth, Imperial 3/0.29 I think, 3 tinned strands per core equates to about 2.98mm2. It's like new.

Replacement of felt during loft conversion
Onoff replied to DIYmadDAD's topic in Building Regulations
I think that traditional, bitumen based, string reinforced roofing felt under tiles, has a lifespan of approx 30 years?I can't imagine in 2006 they used that though? (I know mine done in 1987 is becoming very brittle). Maybe the company doing the loft extension is dubious of the original work. At least if they renew the lot and it leaks then there's only one company to blame!- 8 replies

No-concrete foundations for a timber framed building

What's the benefit of piles over a slab with a ring beam? -
Not at all. I just dug a 13m trench with one, 600mm deep. No wider than 6". I started off with a pronged digging tool then gave up and switch to the mattock. A revelation. I had to go through conifer roots and clay. Sharp mattock blade will go straight through the roots if you hit 'em right.
