Feel like silly questions but may not be.
SuperJohnG replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
Sometimes there is good reason to add future proofing but I don't see why here and a lot of people do add cat 6. But again I think why, you are future proofing backwards unless you need to have a hugely fast connection wireless is excellent these days and will only get better (arguable if it ever needs to get better from where it is) so not at any point should you be worried about going back to it. The solution here is to ensure a better wifi signal imo -

45 degrees seems high? Are you sure that's right. Why also do you wa t to run it just now if you don't need it? -
Stud wall sound insulation question
SuperJohnG replied to jfb's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
You have to have air gap otherwise it transfers the sound right through. No idea how it would fair cutting it in half though, can imagine that will be a pain. -

For sure. Now I'm left to wrestle the airtightness though...these bloody vaulted ceilings are going to be lovely, but they are murder.

I started myself and done a room...was long but today my mate helped who runs a company and brought 7 guys with him. Done full house nearly in a day. Maybe done 90% which has saved me maybe 2 months.

I used 10mm capping board. Works fine. Will add photos tomorrow.

Only on the amount over you originally paid though.

I've just fitted two bits for Juliet balconies. 1300 x 900mm with 4 holes drilled for mounts plus supply if stainless steel mounts. £481 Inc VAT. That's 10mm toughened glass with polished edges.

That's pretty amazing. Is that a 10kWp array? That's the equivalent of 16 quid today if the kWh price is 0.27p right?

It's up in the caravan axle stands that came with it. The wind up legs were completely done when I got it. I've got 8 stands but going to up it to 12 or maybe 16 then tie it down. @LA3222 brilliant pics. Exactly what i was looking for. Looks really good.

Caravan on site now, we will move in start of September and have maybe 5-6 months over a winter in here maximum. Maybe less if it all goes quicker as we only have inside to do now on house. But nonetheless we will be in there during winter. Instead of steps, looking at adding a decking nit sure if just to make it out of pallets and but lying about and a little rough of I do have a bundle of 8 and 10 x 2 timbers left over by the kit suppliers I can use. I'd just need to get posts for then to build a deck then decking planks. Or should I save my money and do it cheap as chips? Also looking at doing a lean to on that deck to get muddy close and wets shoes off which I hear helps. Any other good ideas advice? Pictures appreciated on good ideas!

@Mike_scotland what did you end up doing? I'm in the same stage right now and swithering to just get lots of 50mm or put 25mm somewhere?

Sound insulation
SuperJohnG replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I'm just about to buy some APR as I'm told a 30% price rise coming this week and I'll need ot shortly. Not sure from this what to buy for internal walls. They are 90mm studs at 600mm centres. I was assuming 50mm throughout the house but might seem daft now. Is it worth just putting 25mm in hallway walls? Then 50mm where it matters between rooms and bathrooms? Also daft question. How do you hang it? It.can just sit there surely especially at 25mm? Or do you fit one side of PB the place it against it? Also where studs are less than 600mm do you cut it or just force it smaller? -
I owed my plot prior to getting a welfare build mortgage but and used it as part of the LTV. I owned our current house outright but this wasn't included anywhere apart from ecology gave me the value of this house part if the self build mortgage on interest only but it wasn't tied in. I used ecology - only 500 fee and very very straightforward. All the other particularly build zone have horrific fees and not good to work with. A quick search on here and you'll find plenty of votes for ecology.

Protek - No more policies available.
SuperJohnG replied to SuperJohnG's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
As an update - ProTek are no back doing policies and have a second underwriter. I have just purchased a policy from them - I'm currently pre first fix and the costs were £3500 Inclusive of site audit fees and IPT. Very pleased as I was getting horrific quotes of £7-9k which I thought I was going to have to suck up. -
Reducing Energy Bills - How goes it?
SuperJohnG replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I've just been asked to increase from 200 quid a month on octopus (standard tariff) to £295. This is our current 1975 brick and block with only ceiling insulation in loft and not much. But I will decline as we are selling and eill move in a few months but I use a shed load of kWh's -
Why are there no surveyor's in Scotland?
SuperJohnG replied to SuperJohnG's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
Seems like more developers focused. My point being that you do t get to select them either,m appointed by the SW company. -
Why are there no surveyor's in Scotland?
SuperJohnG replied to SuperJohnG's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
I had a quote from the architects cert people..but they wanted £9k - which is £4k more than the lowest SW quote - also seemed madness. I shoudl have maybe ben more particular in that there seems to be no surevyor's doing SW inspections. I'd think @saveasteading might be right in that the criteria for the eprson might be different. But a building inspector for the council will be just as qualified as a SW surevyor - so maybe it's an issue in that all our building control is done by the LA. If only the SW companies would accept the LA building sign off then it woudl make life very easy, there is possibiliy an opportunity for councils here to make some extra cash. was this for LA inspections or for a structural warranty? -
One thing I find with the ridiculously priced structural warranty's is that a massive proportion of the cost, in some cases 70% is that of the inspection fees. Which is largely because i am in Scotland and there seems to be absolutely no surveyors here. The closest is the Lake district and that drives the cost. In some cases very ridiculously high for those in the Highlands. Why is that there are no 'building surveyors' doing this freelance work in Scotland? is it that they are all employed by the council instead? Seems so daft. But an amazing opportunity for someone to generate lost of cash who lives North of the border who wants the work and can price the survey fees reasonably.

What's the final finish?
