Trenching with compressed air
Triassic replied to Temp's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
The're building a new road nearby and they use a compressed air lance and a lorry mounted vacuum excavator. Not cheap to hire, but great where you have loads of buried utilities. -
The bottom line is that we are here to help, you do really need to get the timber frame up first, once you have the roof on, the vapour membrane on the outside and windows in, you will be water tight. Then you can concentrate on the outside rain screen block work .
-
The timber frame is the structural element that supports everything, including providing ties to support the block work.
-
You should be erecting the timber frame first, as it needs to be covered in vapour membrane and the joints taped to meet air tightness Regs. You can't do the external block work first, it's the wrong way to go about things! edit . Just a thought, my SE required the outside face of the timber frame to be covered in 11mm OSB to provide strength, this would make it impossible to tie the timber frame to the blockwork.

My DNO is very specific, red duct up to the meter box, with the bit from ground level to the box on the wall being white. They were also very specific on the depth of the ried duct and the fact it had to be laid in sand with 100mm above and below the duct. They came out last week and measured the trench depth and sand depth in a number of places, the guy was clear, if he found a problem I'd have to sort it out before they would install the cable in the red duct. After the meter I can do what I want, so I've installed black ducting, no sand and no measuring the trench every couple of metres for depth!

What a great idea, I'll add that to my checklist.

As no doubt a few of you have read I've had a few computer issues of late but with the help of @Onoff I've managed to breath life back into my 15 year old Dell. My next task is to move from the Windows OS to LunuxMint and then reload Outlook 2003 (thanks to @JSHarris for his help here) and then move my mail files from Outlook 2003 onto Thunderbird. I had a quick look at doing this yesterday and I don't think it's a straightforward task. In Outlook I've got years worth of mail filed under various folder headings and I'd like to preserve the file structure following the move. Has anyone done this and if so, how?

What little strength it has isn't compromised!

This should hide the Mexican Wave.

If you intend to sell the old house, beware, you don't want to have a 'formal' dispute with the neighbour, as you would have to declare it to the buyer. If it were me, I'd hand him a copy of the SEPA guidance and tell him of your concerns regarding flooding. If he fails to listen, contact SEPA and let them sort him out!

We went to the House Build Show at the NEC yesterday to look at windows for the new house, to be hon st we were a little disappointed by the small number of window companies exhibiting. Our other observation was have chunky the majority of the profiles were! We're looking for more glass and less profile, anyone got any suggestions? I'm also a tight git, so value for money also plays a part.

You've got to ask the price every time at builders merchants, other wise you get ripped off!

A good few years ago I had a similar problem. Depending on the thickness Of the acrylic sheet the bath is make from, you might be able to lightly sand the problem away.

I agree with @Nickfromwales filler and lining paper. Fill, sand smooth and then lining paper and paint.

I used GRP valleys rather than lead. I found them easier to install. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=grp+valley+boards&client=firefox-b&prmd=simvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwja-Om5wOnSAhULCsAKHbbvD4YQ_AUICCgC&biw=1024&bih=704

I got the jitters and have procrastinated for around twelve months. Having talked it through with a friend who is also self building I've bitten the bullet and we will be starting the build as planned this year. Just a thought, why not post your plans here and get some feedback. It might help you focus.

Maybe the nice Keith over at eBuild could put a link on the front page to direct people here?
